Fred,
I think you misunderstood the article. First off, families who have A boarding passes board with the A boarding group. Then in our tests, the rest of the families can board between the A and B boarding groups. At this point in the boarding process, there are usually still many seats togethers for families, and it allows them some time to settle in.

Kim,
You can't have it both ways. I can't resemble Brad Pitt in one comment, then Yoda in the next.

Gee Kim,
You have it all wrong, Brad looks like ME, not the other way around. While I didn't have any surgery, I have grown a beard--don't know yet if I will keep it.

If I am going to be driving somewhere away from my final flying destination, I always throw a good Road Atlas in my bag. The rental car company maps are okay ,but they don't show a lot of detail like a good atlas does. And an atlas is so flat that it doesn't take up any room in a suitcase.

Yeah Joe,
Finding my comment in the spam queue was like coming home from school and finding that your parents had moved and not told you. Please tell Leah that I am fine candy corn-wise.

With most airlines that may have been true but like SWA, PSA didnt interline and served on on point to point route system. Also like SWA PSA was just beginning to fly out of state in 1979. Bottomline PSA didnt have any connecting traffic out of OAK. The airport was very different then with only ten or so gates total.

Hey Bill,
I got to thinking about the 1979 OAK/LAX numbers and they seem awfully light. I worked in OAK at the time, and my airline's operations office was right next to PSAs gates. They filled up 727s to LAX on a daily basis. I know they boarded more than seven people a day?

Mr. Bard,
I am sorry that Southwest is not your airline of choice. One thing most folks forget is that assigned seating is no guarantee of avoiding a center seat or of being able to sit together. In June, I flew US Airways from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Phladelphia as a fullfare passenger. Even though I booked a week ahead of time, the only seats available were center seats.

Bill,
As a fellow airline geek, I found your post fascinating. One of the carriers flying between SFO and LAX was Pan Am. They had a 747 that ran some of the days of the week from SFO to LAX before continuing to South America. They sold their fares for an amazing $14 (or maybe it was $19) one way. It was quite a contrast with the local SFO/LAX bargain fare travelers mixing with people paying thousands to fly to South America.

This is a first--a blog post written from a hospital bed. Seems that somewhere along the way, I picked up some blood clots in my leg and lungs. So here I sit poked, prodded, and tested morning, afternoon, and night until my blood gets thinned to the proper vampirian consistency.
In the meantime, I've been reading e-mails from my friends at work. Thankfully, I can remain connected via crackberry. At times like this, I am so grateful to be part of the Southwest Airlines Family. Hopefully, I will be out of here soon, and I thank Angela Vargo and Paula Berg for moderating the blog in my absence
Update: I got to go home on Friday (August 17) but the docs want me to take a week off.

Again, Shelley is being much too modest. I know that she lived and breathed this Share the Spirit campaign for months. She will never admit it, but her hard work and Servant's Heart was instrumental in its success. You go SL!

Raphael,
I'm not sure of the original NYSE stock price, but I bet Edna can find out. In 1977, Southwest finished the year with ten aircraft, 892 Employees, and we carried just under 2.4 million Customers. We also opened five new cities that year, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, El Paso, and Austin.

Hey everyone, I know you are tired of seeing my name, but don't worry, we have some great new posts on the way--so humor me in the meantime. I found this great site by photographer Troy Pavia that features nightime shots of an airliner graveyard. These facilities are sad, but fascinating, and I can imagine the stories these hulks of metal could tell. In fact, I can tell some stories about some of these aircraft on the site, like the Delta TriStars and 727s that were brand new when I started my aviation career. The bottom photo is of one of Southwest Airline's former 737-200s. Click here to see visit the site.
