Company Intends to Purchase Low Carbon Renewable Jet Fuel
Southwest Airlines® (NYSE: LUV) has signed an agreement with Red Rock Biofuels LLC (RRB) to purchase low carbon renewable jet fuel, made using forest residues that will help reduce the risk of destructive wildfires in the Western United States. The airline's agreement with RRB covers the purchase of approximately three million gallons per year. The blended product will be used at Southwest's Bay Area operations with first delivery expected in 2016.
"Our commitment to sustainability and efficient operations led us on a search for a viable biofuel that uses a sustainable feedstock with a high rate of success," said Bill Tiffany, Vice President of Supply Chain at Southwest Airlines. "Red Rock Biofuel's technology, economics, and approved use made entering into an agreement for purchase a win-win situation."
RRB's first plant will convert approximately 140,000 dry tons of woody biomass feedstock into at least 12 million gallons per year of renewable jet, diesel, and naphtha fuels.
RRB's CEO, Terry Kulesa said "From the outset, we have sought to build the best possible team of project partners. A conversation we started with Southwest on the premise of providing renewable jet fuel at cost parity with conventional jet fuel has evolved into a great partnership. We're happy to help Southwest diversify its fuel supply."
Southwest is a long-time member of Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) which is a government and industry coalition for the development and deployment of alternative jet fuel for commercial aviation. As a member of CAAFI, the airline has followed the progress of alternative fuel technologies. Red Rock Biofuels is the first viable opportunity the airline has found to meet its financial and sustainability objectives.

The Mayor of the City of Los Angeles Eric Garcetti Throws Ceremonial Earth to Commence Terminal 1 Construction, with Anticipated Completion in 2018 This release contains: 1 Related Document, 5 Photos Southwest Airlines® (NYSE: LUV) helped kick-off construction of the $508-million Terminal 1 Modernization Program at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) today with a groundbreaking ceremony featuring Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, City Councilman Mike Bonin, City Councilman Tom LaBonge, Los Angeles Airport Commission President Sean O. Burton, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey, and Southwest Airlines Vice President of Airport Affairs Bob Montgomery.
The modernization of the aging terminal, built in the early 1980s, is expected to transform the entire Passenger experience from the curb to the gate, and will include a new 12-lane security screening checkpoint; a fully automated checked-baggage inspection and sortation system; a new and expanded dining and retail collection featuring activated gate hold rooms with lounge-style seating; refurbished arrival/baggage claim area; replacement of the passenger boarding bridges; renovations to airline support office space; modernized aircraft parking/apron pavement and hydrant fueling system; improvements to the building facade; and relocation of the main terminal entrances to the west end of the building to ease traffic congestion.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2018 and will be phased to minimize inconvenience to Customers, Employees, and guests.
"The Terminal 1 improvement project will bring a better passenger experience and 1,500 construction jobs to LAX," said Mayor Eric Garcetti. "As part of our $7 billion investment in LAX, we're remodeling every terminal and creating 40,000 jobs. Because Los Angeles deserves a world-class airport."
"The partnership we have with Southwest Airlines will create the world-class experience we want for all LAX passengers," LAWA Executive Director Lindsey said. "As our passenger base continues to grow and change, we are working hard to increase efficiency and accommodate their needs today and in the future."
"The Modernization of Terminal 1 at LAX has long been in our sights," said Bob Montgomery, Southwest Airlines Vice President of Airport Affairs. "The renovation within our current space at Terminal 1 will allow us to better serve our Customers today as well as provide the opportunity to expand our network options alongside any growth in Customer demand."
When completed, the Passenger's journey from curb to aircraft boarding bridge will be transformed and designed to provide a more efficient and exciting travel experience. By reorganizing the interior uses of the building and shifting the ticketing lobby and main entrances to the west, passenger drop off and pick up areas are anticipated to improve, as well as congestion in front of Terminal 1 reduced.
Once inside the terminal, Passengers will enjoy a brightened Southwest Airlines ticketing lobby with sleek design features and additional windows for more natural light. New, more-efficient security screening systems and added lanes are anticipated to shorten federal passenger security screening lines.
In collaboration with Southwest Airlines and LAWA, the modernized concourse design by Westfield will feature a hip, modern Californian feel that taps into the LA feeling and energy of the Southwest brand. The design vision forges the unexpected with efficiency, which is expressed through simple but sculptural forms curated with artisanal, creative and fun products, palette, and finishes. The design is expected to bring the terminal to life with opened and expanded views to flight operations and inviting sightlines outside, as well as authentic layers of materials and finishes, sculpted facades, and pops of color inside.
Westfield's new retail and dining collection in Terminal 1 will offer 24 spaces across 25,242 square feet—nearly double the existing program. Plans include full-service restaurants along with a variety of casual and grab-and-go food offerings, as well as new high-end retail and traveler essentials. The program will open in a phased approach, with the first Westfield developed spaces scheduled to open late Summer 2015.
"The redevelopment of Terminal 1 is another pivotal milestone in our journey to bring world-class dining, retail, and amenities to the millions of travelers who use LAX as their gateway to the world," said Dominic Lowe, Executive Vice President Westfield. "We are thrilled to partner with Southwest Airlines and Los Angeles World Airports to create a uniquely Los Angeles, cutting-edge new environment and passenger experience to rival the world's best airport terminals."
When finished, Terminal 1 will accommodate 13 of the airline's larger Boeing 737-800 series aircraft, with updated passenger boarding bridges, aircraft apron pavement, upgraded hydrant fueling system, and electric-vehicle chargers to support its electric ground service equipment program.
Southwest Airlines is the only carrier operating out of Terminal 1. In 2013, Southwest was the fourth busiest airline at LAX based on Passengers enplaned, serving more than 7.4 million Passengers, or 11.1 percent of the airport's total passenger volume.
The Southwest Airlines Program Team includes AvAirPros (program manager), ODEMCO (design manager), PGAL (design & engineering) and Hensel Phelps Construction Company (construction manager). The work is part of LAX's $7.3 billion capital improvement program, LAX Is Happening, projected to last through 2019.

Company Introduces New Aircraft Livery, Airport Experience, and Logo--Dedicating 'Heart' Livery to its Employees This release contains: 2 Related Documents
Southwest Airlines® (NYSE: LUV) introduced a modern new look to its iconic brand today at an event dedicated to its Employees. The airline proudly unveiled a new aircraft livery, named Heart, airport experience, and logo. The new look puts the airline's Heart on display, showcasing the strength of the nearly 46,000 Employees Companywide—whose dedication can be felt by every Customer each time Southwest Airlines connects them to what's important in their life.
To view the multimedia assets associated with this release, please click http://www.multivu.com/players/English/7316751-southwest-airlines-unveils-new-heart-look-logo-livery-airport-experience/
"Our collective heartbeat is stronger and healthier than ever, and that's because of the warmth, the compassion, and the smiles of our People," said Gary Kelly, Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. "The Heart emblazoned on our aircraft, and within our new look, symbolizes our commitment that we'll remain true to our core values as we set our sights on the future."
It's a big year for Southwest, as the airline introduces its legendary brand to international destinations; the repeal of the Wright Amendment is within sight; and the integration of AirTran Airways operations is on track to be completed later this year. Southwest continues to evolve, serving more than 90 destinations, and expanding its footprint in big markets like New York City and Washington, D.C.
"With all these exciting changes happening, we thought it was time for a new visual expression of our brand—one that marries our past to our present and sets the course for where we're headed in the future," Kelly said.
NEW LOOK, SAME GREAT EXPERIENCE The announcement of Southwest Airlines' modern new look introduces a striking new livery design, new iconic Southwest logo, newly designed inflight materials and magazine, an advertising campaign that celebrates the airline's unique personality, and a revamped experience both online and at its airport locations, all of which showcase the unique spirit and Heart of the brand, and communicate its focus on Customer care. In addition, the airline will introduce a refresh to its signature "DING!" mnemonic.
To bring this all to life, Southwest collaborated with advertising and branding partners GSD&M, Lippincott, VML, Razorfish and Camelot Communications—each an expert in their own field. The task was given to distill more than 40 years of rich history into one modern, impactful look, representing the exciting future of a one-of-a-kind airline.
"The job wasn't to change who we are," said Kevin Krone, Southwest's Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. "We already know who we are. The job was to keep the elements of Southwest that our Employees and Customers love, and to make them a bold, modern expression of our future."
"With so much of Southwest's focus firmly set on the future, it was a natural time to look at our visual identity," said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.
"As we developed the identity, it wasn't just about the new livery or the logo, but about developing the total, integrated brand expression of Southwest," said Rodney Abbot, Senior Partner at Lippincott.
"The Heart is our identity—the Heart of our Southwest Employees enhances the Customer experience," said Krone. "It's the finishing touch that makes the Southwest brand unique, demonstrating that Southwest cares about each and every Customer. Even on the belly of the plane, the Heart is a symbolic reminder that we put our Hearts into every flight."
"For more than three decades, GSD&M has partnered with Southwest Airlines, so we certainly understand and believe in the power of Southwest's Heart," said Marianne Malina, President of GSD&M. "We were thrilled with the opportunity to partner with an extraordinary and talented team to bring Southwest's love of People front and center. This work is a celebration of the great brand that Southwest has become and, most importantly, where it's headed next."
Southwest Airlines and its partners did comprehensive research and held numerous focus groups with Employees and Customers to determine how best to create the new look. The airline heard that it was important to remain unique and to retain its personality; for these reasons, Southwest continues to use the vibrant color palate and striped tail that has long identified the carrier, while adding a modern touch, proudly displaying the Southwest name on the side of the fuselage and presenting the Heart on the aircraft belly. Southwest has had several different liveries and logos throughout its 43-year history; remaining current and relevant is critical to the sustainability and future growth of the brand.
As a legendary low-fare carrier, Southwest doesn't make a change this bold without first assessing the cost impact. The approach and focus with this launch has been with the intent to remain cost-neutral by using a phased rollout. Aircraft will receive the newly painted livery within the aircraft's existing repainting schedule, with new aircraft delivered in the new Heart livery. In addition, many of the future airport conversions will be integrated into existing and upcoming airport improvement projects. Because Southwest is taking this cost-conscious approach to the conversion of planes and airports, it might be some time before Customers and Employees see the new design in person.
In the meantime, Customers and fans can enjoy a closer look at Southwest's new livery, logo, and airport experience by visiting Southwest.com/Heart. Experience the announcement made earlier; a 360-degree view of the Heart livery; and hear from Southwest Executives on what the new look means.

MODELS SHOWCASE FALL FASHIONS AT 35,000 FEET TO CELEBRATE RENEWED PARTNERSHIP This release contains: 1 Related Document, 8 Photos, 2 Videos More than 140 Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) Customers are heading to The Magnificent Mile® in Chicago with spending money after fashion models put on a show on their flight at 35,000 feet. The "Runway in the Sky" kicks off a renewed partnership between Southwest Airlines and The Magnificent Mile Association. In addition to being longtime partners, Southwest Airlines is now the Official Airline of the Magnificent Mile, and it's celebrating with a truly unique experience--turning Flight 904 from New York (LaGuardia) to Chicago (Midway) into a fashion show in the air. Six Factor Models took to the aisle-turned-runway, showing off the latest fall fashions from Macy's at Water Tower Place on North Michigan Avenue. At the end of the fashion show, every Customer was surprised when fashion icon Carrie Lannon announced that everyone would be getting off the flight with a $100 gift card to spend at a retailer on The Magnificent Mile.
"After years of working together to delight guests during our annual tree-lighting parade to kick off the holiday season, we are thrilled that this new partnership will bring unique value to visitors headed to The Magnificent Mile all year round," said John Chikow, President/CEO of The Magnificent Mile Association.
The Runway in the Sky kicks off The Magnificent Mile Shopping Festival™ presented by MasterCard®. The festival runs from August 22 through September 1, 2014. This year's festival even includes a weekend-long ShopFest on August 23-24 where North Michigan Avenue turns inside out, as retailers greet shoppers with "pop up" shopping displays and interactive experiences. As part of ShopFest, Southwest Airlines will present Andy Grammer live in concert at the John Hancock Center plaza (875 N. Michigan Avenue) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 23. The event is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a meet-and-greet with the singer-songwriter at Water Tower Place (835 N. Michigan Avenue) at 2:00 p.m.
"This partnership takes The Magnificent Mile and Southwest Airlines to new heights," said Teresa Laraba, Southwest Airlines Senior Vice President Customers. "We always want to provide a unique experience to our Customers whether at the airport, in the air, or at home."
To download broadcast quality video and high-resolution photos of today's Runway in the Sky, visit swamedia.com.
ABOUT THE FEATURED FASHION The show started with a look at the jumpsuit -- especially popular this fall for day-to-night transitions. Topped with a flowing, printed, knee-length vest, the MICHAEL Michael Kors black knit sleeveless jumpsuit is casual and ready for a weekend outing. With the vest removed, and the addition of strappy heels and sparkling jewelry, the jumpsuit can transition to a night on the town.
Trendy jeans and a pop of color were part of casual looks for both men and women. For men, Diesel's black, button-front jeans and black leather jacket were paired with a bright red Diesel tee shirt. Women will be on trend this fall in patterned jeans like the snakeskin printed jeans from 7 For All Mankind and a fitted jean jacket from Free People. This ensemble was completed with a RACHEL Rachel Roy top in bright purple.
Business looks veered away from conservative and took on an edgy vibe. For women, the traditional black skirt suit was updated with a pleated, pleather skirt and a cream top with pleather beading, all from Calvin Klein. The men's look from I.N.C. for Men also showed a twist on the black business suit. While the black slacks were traditional, the textured black suit jacket provided a more contemporary look. With a white shirt, it was business-appropriate. But switch out the dress shirt for a trendy tee, and the look could go from office to after-work socializing.
The finale evening look was all about sparkle. A mini-dress in midnight blue from Adrianna Papell was simply elegant thanks to intricate beading on front and back. The midnight blue was a refreshing color variation for evening.

Program Helps Patients and Caregivers with $13.2 Million in Free Travel Donated Since 2008 This release contains: 1 Related Document Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) invites nonprofit hospitals and medical transportation organizations to apply for the 2015 Medical Transportation Grant Program. The program is designed to ease the financial burden on families confronting serious medical problems that require travel for treatment. Southwest donates roundtrip airline tickets to nonprofit hospitals and medical organizations in the program, and empowers the organizations to distribute the tickets to patients as they see best based on individuals' needs. In 2014, Southwest donated more than $2.8 million in complimentary airfare through the program. Hospitals and medical transportation charities can apply by visiting http://www.southwest.com/medicalgrant now through Tuesday, Sept. 30.
"At Southwest, everything we do is from the heart. Our Medical Transportation Grant Program is no different, as we embrace those individuals and families who require critical and specialized treatment,” said Linda Rutherford, Southwest Airlines' Vice President Communication and Outreach. “From lessening the financial burden on families needing to travel for treatment to partnering with medical organizations, we are proud of the many ways this program is making a positive difference in the lives of our neighbors and the communities we serve.”
The Medical Transportation Grant Program began as a response to a need that was repeatedly expressed to Southwest—families facing serious illnesses needed to travel for treatment. When the Medical Transportation Grant Program launched in 2008, Southwest donated 1,700 tickets to 13 hospitals and organizations. What started as a small effort to make a difference has grown into a nationwide movement, benefiting thousands of individuals and hundreds of communities. Southwest has donated more than $13.2 million in free airfare since the program began seven years ago. Last year, Southwest's Medical Transportation Grant Program served patients seeking medical treatment at nearly 100 hospitals and organizations nationwide, including the internationally-recognized Shepherd Center.
“Southwest's Medical Transportation Grant Program has been a tremendous benefit to our patients and their families,” said Gary R. Ulicny, Ph.D, President and CEO at Shepard Center. “With catastrophic injuries, it is essential for a patient's loved ones to be part of the rehabilitation and recovery process. This program provides that opportunity for families who might otherwise not be able to afford the travel costs.”
More than 33,000 patients' lives have been positively impacted through this unique program. Read personal stories of patients who have benefitted from the Medical Transportation Grant Program on the NUTS About Southwest blog.
Each participating hospital and nonprofit has unique guidelines for the administration of tickets. To learn about qualifications for travel assistance, please contact the specific hospital or nonprofit organization.

Southwest and SeaWorld have mutually decided not to renew their partnership when the contract expires at the end of the year. Our promotional marketing relationship began in 1988 and was one of the first of its kind – focused on co-marketing opportunities between Southwest passengers and SeaWorld visitors.
The companies decided not to renew the contract based on shifting priorities. Southwest is spreading its wings with new international service, and increased focus on local market efforts. With an increasing international visitor base, SeaWorld is looking to focus on new and growing markets in Latin America and Asia, among others.
The companies will continue to work together through Southwest Vacations. Southwest's three specialty airplanes will return to the company's traditional livery.
Southwest and SeaWorld have enjoyed their long relationship, and wish each other continued success.

Updated: 7/24/14 at 10:37 AM We've reached out to the Customer and had a very productive conversation. We've apologized and our Company and Employees are ready to move forward serving more than a hundred million Customers annually.
Southwest Airlines appreciates and is active in social media, and it is not our intent to stifle Customer feedback. Social media is a very valuable avenue for engaging with our Customers. On Sunday, July 20, a Southwest Airlines Employee and Customer were having a conversation that escalated about the airline's family boarding procedures. The Customer was briefly removed from flight #2347 from Denver to Minneapolis/St. Paul to resolve the conversation outside of the aircraft and away from the other Passengers. Our decision was not based solely on a Customer's tweet. Following a successful resolution, the Customer and his family were able to continue on the flight to Minneapolis. We are thoroughly investigating the situation. We have reached out to the Customer and offered vouchers as a gesture of goodwill.
