When Southwest makes its inevitable international expansion, I believe something besides a snack pack will be in order. Perhaps you can split your time between feeding the Garage-O-Mizer and Customers? 😄

I flew over the Thanksgiving holiday with crews that were on their last or next-to-last segments for their respective trips. They treated me and my family with smiles and good service as if they were just starting their trips. The only thing that would have made my flights better is if I ended up flying with Carole again. 🙂

So this explains why today's schedule extension came later than expected! 🙂 Sounds like the Garage-O-Mizer is in need of a processor upgrade.
Great work!

I appreciate that Southwest is still the only airline courageous/wise/not-so-full-of-itself enough to have a blog. I am impressed that nearly everything (as far as I can tell), including complaints, is allowed through moderation.
My first suggestion is the addition of user accounts, and the ability of "trusted" users to post without moderation. I think making more of the replies immediate would help increase discussion and traffic to the blog. Granted, the issues inherent in managing a user community might be more than the blog team wants to tackle, but it can be done.

Colleen,
Now that we have your invitation to the Big D, how about a tour of HQ? :)
Congratulations to all involved in getting this accomplished, both legislatively and operationally.

Kenney,
I'm sorry you feel flying shouldn't be fun. I respectfully disagree. It has been fun since I was a child, and I never want that to change. Granted, our wonderful friends *cough* at the TSA have been trying their best to do just that, but they have not yet succeeded in my case.

Dan,
If you can overcome your phobia of open seating, you can stop overpaying for your flights to Tampa. You don't need a computer and printer to check in. You can simply use mobile check in via your cell phone web browser and then print your "A" boarding pass at the airport.
Best wishes.

Sorry to hijack this post, but my curiosity is piqued by Jacob's title. Jacob, what exactly do you do at Southwest? I envision you as the fourth alarm (the first three being watch/cell phone, alarm clock, and hotel wake-up call) for crew overnighting in hotels. 🙂

Welcome to Southwest's inaugural "Montezuma's Revenge" flight. It is the Dallas-based airline's first flight back to the United States 20 minutes after completing its inaugural flight to Mexico.

Stan:
What you posted is pretty straightforward.
If you have an "old" award ticket (these types of awards have not been issued since February if I remember correctly), it is subject to blackout dates but can otherwise be used for a seat on any flight that is not sold out.
If you have a "new" award, it is no longer subject to blackout dates, but it is subject to capacity controls meaning there are only X seats available for award tickets on any given flight. So you may run into a situation where the flight you want is not sold out, but there are no award seats available. In my experience this is most likely to happen during holiday travel times.

Potbelly at MDW is fantastic. On a trip back home from PIT I purposely broke the trip in two so that I would have sufficient time to grab a Wreck. Well, that and I wanted to earn the extra Rapid Rewards credit! 🙂

I agree with David that the Wright compromise is BS. I am still not happy that we are settling for an eight-year delay to full repeal and the destruction of transportation infrastructure.
That said, Jim's idea for the 2014 flights is fantastic. If the Southwest marketing folks go for it, sign me up!

Carole, having been on the receiving end of your fantastic service, I bet Southwest is grateful as well. Now, what can I do to convince you to bid to work my holiday flights? I want my family to experience your Positively Outrageous Service, too! 😄

Fascinating post! Can you point to an example flight that exists or a market that is better served as a result of this optimization? I am curious to see the fruits of this increased efficiency.

Bill,
I know your "Mega" stations aren't hubs in the traditional sense. My point is that to get from one of your smaller stations to the rest of the network almost always requires transit via one of those (what I am calling 🙂 ) de facto hubs. Simply clicking around the interactive route map for nonstop service out of cities like PIT, MHT, JAN, IAD, etc. shows this.

The route system may be point-to-point, but you have at least a handful of de facto hubs: MDW, PHX, LAS, BWI.

Carole,
I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you on my PIT-MDW flight (432) this afternoon. You handled today's weather-delay-stressed passengers with flair. It was inspiring to see how much you enjoy your job after twenty-two years!
I hope to run into you again somewhere across the network, and look forward to your next blog post!
Signed,
The gentleman with the odd blog name in seat 2B.

BWI is indeed huge, but as Edward notes, there is a huge economy in NoVa, and I doubt many in that area make the journey to BWI to fly considering IAD is practically in their backyard.
This is a wise, and welcome IMO, addition to the route network. I hope it is aggressively expanded a'la PHL.
