Also... the current policy in the Help Center mentions "see specialize sports equipment below..." but, there's nothing there about bicycles.

Checking the policy today, seems like it's even more difficult to fly with a bike in a box. The current policy states:
I don't know of a box that hold a normal bike that is 62 inches or less.
Delta's policy is 115 inches as of today: https://www.delta.com/us/en/baggage/special-items/sporting-equipment
United doesn't even give dimensions, they currently state "Oversized fees are waived on properly packed bicycles." https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/baggage/sports-equipment.html
Alaska also waives the oversize fee for bicycles: https://www.alaskaair.com/content/travel-info/baggage/special-baggage/traveling-with-sporting-equipment
Even American Airlines only charges the standard checked bag fee if the bike is under 50 lbs: https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/baggage/specialty-and-sports.jsp
I feel like Southwest is not the best option for taking a bike on a flight. Seems too risky and up to interpretation by the baggage handler and the policy as posted today makes it clear that large items will be charged an oversized bag fee or be directed to ship it as cargo.
