Well I was gonna hold off until I saw the "War Eagle". Confusion abounds at Auburn/Opelika Community College. Tigers? Eagles? Plainsmen?
"Fear the thumb"? More like "Fear the Dumb"...

Everyone knows that MCO stands for "Mickey Controls Orlando".
I still slip sometimes when I'm checking bags or selling a ticket and call Midland "Mafia" because that's how I taught myself when I memorized it (MAF). So- if any of you are ever flying to Midland from Tampa and the guy behind the counter says you have 2 bags checked to Mafia, you'll know what I meant.
No one has mentioned Nashville (BNA). Or Spokane (GEG).

As a fellow Alabamian (also from a "Over the Mountain" suburb of Birmingham-Mountain Brook), I appreciate the references to Southern sayings. You don't hear a lot of that down here in Florida. It's funny- the more south you go in Florida, the more you feel like you are NOT in the South! Other sayings that get weird glances are "That dog'l hunt" and any reference using the word "yonder". I will freely admit that in Customer Service, the honey vs. vinegar analogy holds true. I will bend over backwards and maybe even break or bend a "rule" for someone who is genuinely nice. If we have wronged a Customer, they have every right to be upset- but it is how they express their anger that will determine whether they will be "processed" simply for the sake of removing them from your presence, or whether they will be "WOW'ed" with the responsiveness and compassion that they probablly deserve. Screaming at people to get what you want will only get the person that is trying to help you so riled up that they just want you gone. Calmly explaining your situation and why you think it's wrong will get you a lot farther than screaming and cursing.
And by the way- after hundreds and hundreds of flights; I watch and listen to the safety announcements. Making eye contact and nodding let's that F/A know they are respected. Plus- it's funny to see the different personalities- especially when you get a good veteran crew on a SWA flight. those old jokes are still so corny that that they are funny.
Seriously-anyone who has ever been in an actual air emergency will tell you that Flight Attendants are highly trained professsionals who are much more than a drink and snack server!

Funny that this blog appeared. I am one of those people that everyone else calls when they can't think of the name of a song or remember a computer entry...last week, a Co-Worker called me at my gate and asked me how peanuts became the "snack" for airlines. She said that her Grandmother had posed the question to her- said that airlines had been serving peanuts as long as she could remember- even in the 50's and 60's. I was stumped. I didn't have an answer.
So- does anyone know the origin of peanuts being served on airplanes? Could it have been "fashionable in the 50's? Could it have been requested by Customers? Could it have been cheap? And then of course the follow up question- did as many children have peanut allergies back then as they do today? Inquiring minds want to know...

A "DC One" aircraft would be great- when and ONLY when the Wright Amendment is repealed. And it should have the signatures of every Congressperson that voted for the repeal engraved on the overhead bins...like the 25th anniverssary plane has all Employees names on it. That would be way cool. Talk about a lobbying gimmick..."if you sign this, we'll put YOUR face on OUR tail"... I think it'd work!

The service to NOLA will grow as demand grows...I agree that BHM should be the first to get some flights. I understand that many residents have relocated to B'ham temporarily. It's nice to hear that SWA is needed IN New Orleans as much as SWA NEEDS New Orleans. My mother has always said "it's okay to not be at every party and be missed by everyone...they will appreciate you more the next time they see you".
On the Atlanta front- I am a staunch supporter of SWA going into Fulton County Brown Field (the smaller satellite airport near Six Flags). Build a terminal and crank it up. The north and east ATL suburbs would eat it up! If not- go into Greenville, SC or Chatanooga, TN. The business people in and vacationers will drive 50-60 milres to avoid Hartsfield. I bet 10-15% of Southwest's BHM traffic comes over from the ATL metro area.

Louisiana One should definately be considered. Or just a "Spirit of New Orleans" would be great.
Can any of you history buffs out there explain the uniqeness of the Maryland state flag? What do all of the different patterns represent? Funny- right after I posted this morning, I get to work and what's the first thing I see? Yep- the red, white, yellow and black of MD1. Some Customers stare and stare...some gawk...some take pictures. It definately catches the eye! And by the way- I wasn't ripping our Florida flag...it's just a big red "X" on a white background and the state seal is in the middle (I think the red cross is the cross of St. Mark...or St. Andrew... Alabama has the exact same flag as Florida minus the state seal).

Those of us in the Sunshine State would love a "Florida One" aircraft. SWA has become Florida's largest intrastate carrier, and has surpassed the competition in the large markets of Tampa and Orlando as those airport's largest carrier, respectively. The question is this: does a state specialty plane have to be the state flag? Our flag is quite boring, and some creativity might be fun with a Florida-themed aircraft...like making the plane look like a giant alligator, much like the popular Shamu planes (although you'll probably get some critisism from the FSU Seminole fans!). Thoughts...?

My fellow Employees at the TPA Station will laugh when they see me blogging....I have craved for a site like this for years! Reading through the posts, I recognize several names of People I have come in contact with over the years- namely Amy Shipley, who was my initial Training Instructor. Glad you are still with us, Amy...how many titles have you had now?
Truly- Southwest's Culture is the standard for not only the airline industry, but any corporation. All you have to do is pick up a newspaper any day of the week and see the competition's employees struggling and taking pay cuts, losing benefits and being demoralized. As those who read Southwest Employee posts, you will notice that we capitalize words like Employee, Customer, Warrior Spirit, Culture...etc.(when pertaining to Southwest). This will be fun to watch and fun to participate in. Go LUV go. Repeal Wright
