It's so troubling to lose someone you love. However I wish you great happiness these holidays. She sounds like she was an amazing woman, and it's great that you are able to share the story of her life with us. I've loved my few trips with Southwest, the friendly gate agents, Pilots, and other staff. But I don't think I had felt that "Southwest Family" feeling until I read this. I'd love to be apart of the Southwest Family, as more than just a customer.
Keep your heads up!

i like everything except i think the families should just go back to pre-boarding. im not sure why it was switched to where it is now, i haven't seen an explaination, but i think everyone would be fine with it being swithced back. let them have their extra time to get seats together, and get car seats or w/e in, and get settled into their seat, then let everyone else start boarding the plane. other than that, keep everything the way you changed it to.
do you have more of a specific timeline for implimenting the new gate area's? i assume DTW will be one of the last places to get these, since the building of the new terminal is suppose to be completed in spring '08 i believe.

Brian, thanks for that. Based on your title I assume you really know what you're talking about. But if the FAA scientists say that there's no proof it interference with the aircraft, then why should it be on the list? have you guys tested it yourself? just wondering. thanks a lot. but just to be clear, i may transport it in my carry-on and listen at the gates, correct?

hi. i hope someone who works for southwest can answer this. i am heading out of detroit on wednesday and am bringing my police scanner in my carry-on baggage. is it against southwest rules to operate my scanner while in flight? scanners do not transmit, they only recieve. i hardly see how they would be harmful to an aircraft. the faa states that it is up to the airline, and so does the tsa. so, Southwest Airlines, would I be allowed to listen to my scanner while in the air or even during taxi?

all these suggestions are good. however i have a good idea i think too, however it's a tiny bit difficult for me to explain at the moment.
it would consist of that table, with two power strips down the center, one inch apart. this table would have enough room for one laptop per two plugs. this table should be one side for business use, and one side for personal use. there would be enough LAN plugs for every computer at the table, along with a wireless router inside the table (so it can't be messed with) so other's at the southwest gates can still possibly use another plug elsewhere and get the internet. the LAN and wireless route would not be needed for those aiports with free wifi, such as phx.
at the end of the tables you could have shelves with plugs so someone could just plug in thier device and put it in the little shelf/cubby thing. -- or this could be a separate stand that has like shelves with a plug in the shelf and same as the last shelves, they just put thier device in there. then they just have to watch it. it could lead to liability issues which is the problem i find there. why not just put a power strip on the floor under the seats? two per seat so someone could have a laptop and their cell phone charging or something.
and yes i like the idea of plugs at seats is a great idea but that might be too much of an in-depth thing. however maybe it could be requested on the new planes that are being delivered. adding it to existing planescould cause some problems.
my ideas might be a little far fetched but oh well this is for expressing idea's right?

you people should be ashamed. it's not in your hands. nothing's going to change. they're doing the best they can. there's things about it that can get complicated and you all just don't understand and you're all putting yourself first. go to other airlines. spend the extra money. you all are saying you''ll have to spend extra money elsewhere on a different airline and then you want southwest to refund the difference? are you all out of your mind? that's acknowleging that southwest is going to still have the lower prices but you're going to go ahead and go with a deal somewhere else anyways just because you're all stubbern to wait a little longer. i agree southwest should have their summer schedule out already but what bill is talking about is correct. i'm sure some of you know it is. southwest is going to continue to serve the places they have served, if not more. they will have the flights that you need. so why is it so hard to wait for them? bill doesnt deserve all this. and everyone who's complaining here might just be keeping him from doing his job and frusterating everyone. they don't want to dissapoint their customers, especially those who are most loyal, however they don't have a choice in this instance and you all need to just understand.
ps- forgive me not capitalizing... :D
Thanks Bill. I hope you never have to go through this again. Likewise to all of us Southwest customers!!

If fares rise, I don't think they'll rise much for anyone to freak out about them compared to previous fares. But yes I'm possitive that Southwest is adding more routes, as if I'm correct a new plane arrives like every two weeks. The new planes that are being put into service have to have routes for them to travel. So I believe the orders and deliveries are a pretty big reason for the delay in the scheduling. As the planners need to take a little extra time to figure out where these planes are going to serve for the busy summer travel season.
And here's a wild thought, but highly unlikely. Southwest may also be in a negotiation for a new destination and are buying some extra time to negotiate fee's and such things. Therefore, the extra time may be needed for the negotiation process along with actually planning the routes and putting the pricing on the things.
But Bill, if you care about your customers at all, please don't let this happen again.

3 months should still be enough time to plan this. I imagine you know when your only window is. When you want to go. Why does southwest posting thier schedule right now matter all that much? There is a post now explaining the scheduling. And yes it is computerized. And they do lower fares..Called sales. But I'm talking about route changes. If they were to introduce another route at the beginning of the year, do you think they want to have to post it for the entire year? If they think it might not do so good. Something like that. People should relax a bit and realize that they also do this because of demand. So many of you want to plan and do this and buy, they're giving everyone a jump on the summer. some people dont even think of summer or memorial day plans until march or april. i know a lot of you dissagree with me but it's how it is. relax. if you don't like it, give up your right to fly southwest, and go fly another airline.

I understand that people do want to just get their plans done and over with so they don't have to worry about them. If you're looking at plane tickets for the summer, they should go down again even though they're going up right now.
And yes I realize too that the date of Feb. 8th is still in limbo, but i don't think it will be much longer than that. And yes god help me if I'm wrong. I'm not saying that I don't wish completely that Southwest had access for us to the entire year or even until the end of the summer already. But still even for a large group travelling, or family arrangements, 3+ months should be more than enough time to have that.
I still feel that the few reasons that Southest does this is because of a few things. It makes it easier for them to add new routes (specifically thinking of more flights from one point to another). They are getting how many new planes? Like two per month? So therefore they can take a little extra time and anazlyze the routes and expand things without popping them in there. Also like I was saying previously, it's one of the reasons they can keep their prices steady and fairly low. Other airlines have access for an entire year to date, or at least until the end of the calender year. But their prices go up and down every day. Southwest's prices stay flat. And you can expect them to keep about the same prices as they already have. Still be careful what you wish for because if you want them to expand their booking until say the end of the year, they may raise prices a little bit in advance to make room for fuel prices to rise again if they do. I just don't see the huge deal. You'd still have at least 3 months to give for advance to your employer or family or whoever.
I too am planning a trip. The tickets that I've looked at on the other sites have rose about 140 dollars per seat. But I know that they will come down again. They raise them and drop them all the time. It's a mind game. They raise them so that you think the seats are going, or that they won't ever come back down. That way they can get more money for them. In reality they're just raising them to scare you. By reading most of your comments, I feel like most of you are buying into it. I don't want to argue, but think about what I'm telling all of you. Seriously think about it. I hope southwest does expand pretty soon though until the end of August hopefully, because I like anyone else, even though it may seem differnent, am very anxious to plan and see. Just have to relax for a bit. Have a great day and vacations everyone.

not to mention the scheduleing allows southwest to keep their prices lower and steady because they can adjust prices minorly in periods for fuel and things. it may be something that keeps the prices down where they are people. be careful what you wish for

i don't mind the scheduleing much. it would be different if they let it go until 14 days or something prior to the current cutoff date of May 10th before they expand it. they're planning on extending that cutoff date in early february? that means that you have 4 months between the current cutoff date and when they're going to change that. some people are too pushy to plan thier things. i am waiting to plan things this summer but i can wait a month. southwest is that good. and prices are going up on other airlines but they will come back down between now and then if you're talking about a flight for the summer. and for those memorial day trips, if you know you're going and it just depends on price for which airline, then why can't you still take the days off work? and you shouldnt need to give more than 4 months in advance to take days off work. a month tops. so cut the bull
