I've flown Southwest for years, love the simplicity of their policys and their prompt boarding and departures. As a rule for short trips I have one checked and one carry on bag and for longer trips I have 2 checked and one carry on.
50 lbs per checked bag is a reasonable weight limit. For those who want to get more items packed per bag and keep to the weight restrictions simply do some of the following:
Do not pack toiletries or liquids that can be purchased inexpensively upon arriving at your destination, minimize the number of shoes you pack, and get high quality soft sided light weight baggage made of treated kevlar or ballistic material that resists cuts, tears, punctures and spills.
Good lightweight baggage makes all the difference and easily gives you up to 20 additional lbs to work with when you are checking 2 bags and you will usually find that your stuff is more likely to arrive at your destination on time and unharmed.
