this is not the first time that it has happened. and from what i have read and seen, this rule is used randomly. one passenger got off of one southwest flight where he was deemed small enough to travel without fuss only to be prevented from boarding another southwest flight because he was "too large". did he grow between flights?
why not have a private area with a test seat where people can see if they need to purchase two seats. simple, don't embarrassed them. that is the big issue here (no pun intended).
I don't have a problem with people needed two seats. i don't have a problem with looking at the comfort of other passengers, i don't have a problem with looking at safety, i do have a problem when your company does not enforce its own rules across the board. and i do have a problem when the only way you have to deal with this is to embarrass people into buying another seat. come on, investing in test seats will be an investment (which from reading your earning, you can afford) and it will prevent this angry email/tweet/stories about how you discriminate against "large" people.
