SOUTHWEST AIRLINES AND CONTINENTAL AIRLINES ENTER INTO SLOT LEASE AT NEWARK LIBERTY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (EWR)

DALLAS—Aug. 27, 2010—Southwest Airlines and Continental Airlines confirmed today that they entered into a lease providing Southwest Airlines access to 36 Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) slots which are currently held by Continental.

The lease deal, contingent upon the closing of the Continental and United airlines’ merger by Nov. 30, 2010, and certain governmental approvals, would give Southwest Airlines the right to operate up to 18 daily roundtrip flights at Newark, New Jersey, with some flights beginning in March 2011 and a full schedule in place by June 2011. The slots are spread throughout the day and would allow Southwest the ability to integrate Newark service conveniently into its extensive national route network.

“We are excited by the opportunity to initiate service from Newark, New Jersey, and we plan to enable that service starting next March through continued flight schedule optimization using our existing fleet,” said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines Executive Vice President of Strategy and Planning. “We’ve seen tremendous demand for Southwest Airlines in the New York City/Newark area in the past year.  Customers are clamoring for our unique brand of hospitality, great value, low fares, extensive flight network, and our terrific Employees who deliver outstanding Customer Service. Adding Newark provides an excellent complement to our LaGuardia and Long Island service, giving Customers one more option for travel to and from the greater New York City/New Jersey area. This service also will provide a needed injection of low fares and competition into the New York/Newark market.”

Southwest is working with the Federal Aviation Administration, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Continental and United Airlines to finalize arrangements for commencing its Newark service in March 2011, including the approval of the acquisition of the necessary airport gates and facilities.  Details on what cities Southwest will serve from Newark and on what dates that service will begin have not yet been determined.

“The divestiture of slots at Newark by the combined Continental/United will ensure competition is enhanced, and we appreciate the Department of Justice’s role in finding a fair solution,” Jordan said.

After 39 years of service, Southwest Airlines continues to differentiate itself from other low-fare carriers—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service.  Southwest Airlines is the nation's largest carrier in terms of originating domestic passengers boarded and currently serves 69 cities in 35 states. Southwest also is one of the most honored airlines in the world, known for its commitment to the triple bottom line of Performance, People, and Planet. To read more about how Southwest is doing its part to be a good citizen, visit southwest.com/cares to read the Southwest Airlines One Report™.  Based in Dallas, Southwest currently operates more than 3,200 flights a day and has nearly 35,000 Employees systemwide.  When shopping for Southwest online, it's important to know that Southwest Airlines’ low fares are only available at http://www.southwest.com/?src=PREMNASEWRANNOUNC100827.

This news release contains forward-looking statements related to Southwest’s lease of slots at Newark Liberty International Airport and its related plans and expectations. These statements are based on Southwest’s current intent, beliefs, and expectations and are not guarantees of future results. These statements also involve risks, uncertainties, assumptions, and other factors that could cause actual results to vary materially from those expressed in or indicated by them. PUH-LEEZE, make sure to include BUFFALO - NEWARK flights if everything materializes as planned. It would be wonderful if there were one or more flights in the afternoon so those of us who want to catch a transatlantic flight in the evening can do so.

After years of commuting from Rockland Cty, NY to Islip I was thrilled when service opened up at LGA. Now I am SUPER THRILLED to hear of the possibility of SW coming to EWR!! Great News! Just one more reason to LUV SW!

We flew Southwest to Providence several years ago to see the Fall colors and visit family and friends. We are looking forward to the option of Newark, N.J. Lots of people we know would love to have a non-stop from Seattle to Newark on Southwest. We have been flying SW almost exclusively for approx. 20 years and have convinced family and friends that the "no reserved seating" was not a problem. They started flying Southwest too. We are disappointed to see the extra fee that allows "special boarding" privileges. And are happy Southwest didn't follow the current trend of charging for baggage.

congrats!! I always fly southwest...Hopefully you can fly out of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) It is much more easier to get to DC than Dulles by taking the Metro train. Also, maybe you can have flights from Bubank to San Francisco, just a suggestion.

Hallelujah We finally have you in NJ. As a retired airline Capt(Not SW) I prefer flying Southwest. You have kept it simple.Your success is partially because you are not pulling all the baggage and other fee tricks the other airlines are implementing. My wife and I are your customers as a first choice due to your SERVICE !! It is amazing how many other airline employees travel with you. Keep up the good work. What a great company

Hey SWA! Although Newark does not do much for my traveling, I am glad to see that Southwest is flying to more places. But what would do much for me is to open up in Chattanooga, Tn. I will have three children going to college their soon. Now they have to take a 2 1/2 bus ride to Nashville to get a SWA flight to Chicago. Love Southwest, best fares and the free bags is a HUGE bonus!!! Debbie

We live 19 miles from the new airport at Panama City Beach. We flew Southwest for the first time on a direct flight to Baltimore to attend the 8/28 Restore Honor Rally in Washington, DC. We loved the service, attention, price, location, comfortable seats, knee room, no fee for luggage, etc. Our flight crew were very entertaining (funny) and pleasant. I see the planes fly over our house and get a tingle knowing that your service is available to us just down the road. We love to travel and look forward to the future and expansion of the airport. We are planning a little getaway on your very inexpensive direct flight to Orlando. The airport and your airline are making travel plans for us so accessible. Bringing another location onboard as a direct flight option is the best news we could receive. Our flight to Baltimore was our first direct flight and we loved the experience. I personally have never thought about going to New Jersey...but with a direct flight available- I will make it a priority to visit the state and enjoy all it has to offer. Thanks again for your service. We will be seeing you again soon.

Great to hear about this new airport connections. I am very excited about the possibility of connecting with the Continental International flights through Southwest and possibly save some extra dollars. Please try to use the minihub connection with Kansas City as a possible direct route to Newark. Do you see any posible alliances with Continental for International travel? That would be awesome. Let me know. Dennis

Nashville! You would get six flights a year from my family from Newark to Nashville. Please put BNA on your list of destinations. Thanks!

This is exciting news! I will anxiously be standing by for positive results in March. I am hoping that this will include direct flights (or at least no plane changes) from both San Antonio and Houston Hobby. My 9 year old grandson flies into Newark from San Antonio almost monthly to see his dad (or his dad flies to Houston or San Antonio). We fly to Newark multiple times per year to see our son. It is great to see some more competition entering this market and SWA is one of my favorite carriers to fly.

Now that you have added Boston, Milwaukee & Newark to your list of destination cities, it's time to buy new planes. Your fleet age is the same as United's is and your aircraft utilization per day is higher than your competitors, which is why you can charge less. You are usually my first choice to fly but safety is becoming an issue in my mind.

Awesome! The only non-Southwest flight I take each year is to visit family in NY/NJ at Christmas. Knowing that Christmas 2010 may be the last time I have to fly a different airline carrier is truly exciting. Thanks SW!

CONGRATS on the new addition! You are the best airline EVER! Please consider adding a non-stop from JAX to MSY. You used to have a direct flight before Hurricane Katrina. Now I have to go through Houston, Tampa, or Nashville, etc. Although I'd rather fly many times I've opted to drive because of the time factor. With the time change it can take up to 5-6 hours to get to NOLA and I can drive there in 8. With that said Southwest is still the BEST b/c I have tried other Airlines and not only are they more expensive but you have to go through ATL which is even worse. Fondest Regards, Sharon E

Fantastic! This is the best news I've heard in a long time! It is always a pain to drive all the way to Phily to catch a flight. Thank you for considering Newark finally. May I add, why not consider the great city of Memphis, TN as well? Thanks Southwest for finally coming to EWR.

This is great news! Southwest is our airline of choice. Thank you for not charging extra fees for baggage. It makes flying so much easier not having other passengers loading oversize bags into tiny overhead compartments. I fly to Newark several times a year. Thank you!

Good for you. Wish you would pay a little more attention to the great Northwest though. When you can see the advantages of a non-stop from Eugene, Oregon to Orange County, CA (SNA) I will be first in line for tickets, as would many people here. The one and only time I've flown with you was a very pleasant experience. Even the snacks were fresher! The problem was that to get to Portland I had to fly another airline. PLEASE, PLEASE, come back to Eugene! We need you!
