I fly every 5-6 weeks with Southwest and have never had this problem. I was on a flight to and from Austin last week and to and from Washington this week and my app won't connect for free in-flight movies. It DOES work for TV shows, music, and live TV.

If you've only had it happen on one flight, my guess is there was something wrong with the system on that one flight.
Did you happen to notice whether or not others were watching movies?
