Booking with travel credit and changing mid itinerary question

My son had a travel credit of $20 that I used to book another flight.

The second flight changed in fare 4 times resulting in 4 "new" travel credits totaling $138, but they expire on the date of his original travel credit.

He travels to see his father every summer in June for 2 months.  His travel credit will expire July 14th.  If I booked a flight for him leaving in June and traveling back by July 14th, then changed it at the beginning of July for him to actually come back in August, will that get me around the expiration date so I could use all of his travel funds?

The system won't allow you to change the travel date to be after the funds expire. So for example if you book for returning july 14th and try to change to July 15th it will give you an error.
