Are there any restrictions on what you consider a family to be?

"An adult traveling with a child six years old or younger may board during Family Boarding, which occurs after the “A” group has boarded and before the “B” group begins boarding. If the child and the adult are both holding an “A” boarding pass, they should board in their assigned boarding position."

Frank;
That didn't answer the question. Two legally married adults with children in this country is a family.

Unfortunately, the Family Boarding policy is very vague. It literally says, "an adult traveling with a child..."
In practice, two adults are often allowed to board with a child. Or multiple children, including some over the age limit. Or multi-generational families. It's very much up to the discretion of the Ops Agent, which becomes a problem if that discretion is wielded based on bigotry or bias.
In my opinion, incidents such as the recent one involving the two fathers are caused by the vague policy and inconsistent application. Southwest would do well to address this, but I suspect they won't.
