Prior to deregulation airlines needed a federal certificate of public convenience and necessity. When they had plans to expand beyond the state of Texas, Southwest bought the ceftificate from another carrier that I think was Western. In the Government system each carrier had a two letter identifier so when Southwest bought Western's certificate, they became WN.

I'm a United Airlines 1K and I really mainly fly to their hubs (Chicago, DC, Denver, Los Angeles) and occasionally Seattle (easy connection through SFO) but I'm looking forward to see how SWA does at Logan. I usually fly First class too so I'm not interested in downgrading but I'm sure some of my friends and family will be excited about this new service. Also looking forward to seeing where they'll put the gates and the counter. Possibly in the Terminal C arrivals level (former TermD) where AirTran used to be. I haven't seen any planes at the D gates in years. I've also noticed that SW fares are typically the same or even higher than UA and AA so I'm interested to see how they'll stack up. Might just have to give them a try sometime for kicks.

Why can't ding offer package deals (flight & hotel), instead of one having to go through the whole
site only to find the trips offered to be more than other sites(orbitz, expedite, etc.)? I plan on going to Las Vegas March 15 to March 20, 2009 and fing that your prices for flight and stay at Harrahs is about three hundred more than the highest on the other sites. I called your 800 number and was told you cannot match the lowest price! I have always used Southwest in the past, but the future will
not see me flying Southwest. Now that I am retired, I will be traveling much more than I ever did.

My family and I are planning a vacation to west florida in a couple of week. Southwest doesn't fly into TLH. So we were looking at American (ugh!!!) There prices and flights were retarded. So we looked into flying to JAX and driving 5 hours to our final destination. We saved $1,300 on flight and the car is cheaper in JAX .
I'm thrilled to drive 5 hours after a flight as long as I can fly with SW. They're always friendly and ONTIME. I hate having to use another airline and will do anything to avoid it.

One Step Closer to LGA; U.S. Bankruptcy Court Approves Bid Last month, Southwest Airlines submitted a bid in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Indianapolis that would allow us to assume ATA Airlines’ rights to operate at New York’s LaGuardia (LGA) Airport. The bid was submitted in connection with the Court’s publicly announced auction process for the acquisition of a reorganized ATA, including some of its remaining assets. The Bankruptcy Court stated yesterday that it would grant ATA’s Motion to approve our bid. While the proposed transaction is still subject to completion of final documentation and Court approval of ATA’s Plan of Reorganization, this ruling is an important step in the right direction in order for Southwest Airlines to offer service to LGA. Also, there are still many details that need to be resolved before we could announce specifics about the type of service we could offer or when we could expect to start service at LGA. We expect to have a final answer to these questions by March 2009. As a recap, the $7.5 million bid would allow Southwest Airlines to assume ATA’s rights to 14 slots at LaGuardia, which would permit an operation of up to seven daily roundtrip flights. We would not acquire, as a part of our bid, any aircraft, facilities, or employees of ATA, which filed for bankruptcy protection on April 2, 2008. Once the acquisition is finalized, we will work with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority of New York to commence service at LaGuardia, including acquisition of the necessary airport gate(s) and facilities. www.southwest.com

SWA Launches New Cargo Web Site Southwest Airlines celebrates the launch of our new Cargo web site at www.swacargo.com. Just like the award-winning southwest.com, the Cargo web site offers easy, one-click navigation and real-time flight status, along with shipment tracking. “In addition to excellent ontime performance, our goal at Southwest Cargo is excellent Customer Service,” said Senior Director Cargo Matt Buckley. “The re-launch of our web site gives our Customers even more ways to make shipping with Southwest Airlines easy, convenient, and hassle-free.” The re-launch of www.swacargo.com is another step in a long line of technology enhancements Southwest Airlines Cargo is implementing to improve Customer Service. In the future, Southwest Airlines Cargo will add AdvancedCargo Suite from Lufthansa Systems. The system will help us optimize our air cargo booking, handling, and accounting processes, thus enhancing Customer Service. Shippers will be able to pre-book their Cargo shipments online much like Customers do an airline seat at southwest.com. Eventually, the AdvancedCargo Suite will have enhanced online tracking capabilities via web, PDA, and cell phone. The new tracking capabilities will aid Shippers who have time-sensitive shipments by providing more accurate status updates. Providing more than 150 million pounds of available cargo lift per month, Southwest Airline Cargo is recognized as an industry leader, winning numerous awards for ontime performance, value, Customer Service, and communication. The change fee is a big one. Once Southwest is able to serve New York better, I'll be quicker to buy flights if I'm not sure I'm only about 70% sure I want to take them. The baggage fee is also a big one. I'm flying to Utah this winter. I had a choice between a nonstop on Delta or a Denver transfer on Southwest. The $80 to check my skiis is what made me decide to take Southwest instead.

Posted by kyjel on December 5th, 2009 under the NWA/Delta article
NWA is the worst for customer service and the best for rude employees. Absolutely poor personalities placed behind desks that make things 10 times worse.
Why does Southwest Airlines unload its passengers in less than 3 minutes from parking at the gate while it has become a habit to sit or stand inside the plane for close to 20 minutes and sometimes more to wait for either: A gate guide, A gate operator or sometimes park a mile away to wait for an open gate?
Learn from Southwest, they have a smile on their face all the time even when things are hectic, they load and unload people in a graceful manner with no insults or arguments. They don't refer you to the ticket counter outside the secure area just to add your PERKS like NWA does!
Given the choice, I'll never fly NWA again... simply had enough
Add Delta to this equation and soon the need for another bailout
