Southwest Airlines worked with the City of Dallas to develop a web site (http://www.lovefieldmodernizationprogram.com/) that will keep Customers and Employees updated on the progress being made on the Love Field Modernization Program (LFMP). The site, which launched yesterday, features an animated tour, aerial layouts, and renderings of the proposed changes, as well as sections about community involvement, green development, and the history of Love Field. The LFMP will renovate and expand Love Field—including a new centralized concourse with 20 gates, a remodeled lobby, expanded baggage claim area, and a new ticketing wing. Stay updated on the latest developments with the LFMP by visiting http://www.lovefieldmodernizationprogram.com.

A few years ago, while visiting friends in California, my fiancée bought a wedding dress. A few alterations and six weeks later, I flew back to California to fetch the finished dress and bring it back to Massachusetts. Now, you cannot cram a wedding dress into your suitcase, or even stuff it in the overhead: it has to hang. Upon boarding, I discovered there were no closets. Uh-oh. On any normal plane, this would have been a problem. But this was not any normal plane: it was a Southwest Airlines plane. Hearing of my plight, the pilot took the dress with him up to the cockpit, where it hung safely throughout the flight—and when I changed planes, the pilot on the second flight did exactly the same thing! For this issue, I got to talk with the person largely responsible for the extraordinary culture that led a team of highly trained commercial airliner pilots to serve as my wife’s valet for three thousand miles. to read more, visit: http://www.networkingtimes.com/isolates/page.phtml?article_id=6406214&cid

Airline passengers need to get to their destination quicker, but they also want to enjoy high-quality customer services. Customer service in the airline industry is extremely important because it fosters customer loyalty. A good flying experience will lead to repeated use; a bad flying experience, not only will lead to loss of loyalty, but most importantly to negative word-of-mouth. In such a competitive marketplace and highly concentrated industry as the airline industry, airlines need loyal customers to sustain a competitive advantage. to read more, visit: http://christinapomoni.wordpress.com/2009/12/29/airlines-with-the-best-customer-service/

Just in time for Christmas, a special blog post from our guest, Courtney Shaver of The Container Store. We just can’t contain ourselves! Today, The Container Store hosted 20 Southwest Airlines volunteers at one of our stores in Dallas to learn how to create a beautiful gift wrap presentation. Our Gift Wrap Stylists shared tips and tricks for how to create crisp corners and perfect bows in a snap in preparation for our FREE Gift Wrapping events at five airports across the country on Monday, Dec. 21st! We’ll be at Dallas Love Field, Phoenix Sky Harbor, Denver International, Saint Louis Lambert International, and Baltimore-Washington International Airport. To see the details of where we’ll be at these airports, check out http://www.containerstore.com/swa. Other great gift wrap tips we shared with the Southwest folks? Be sure to set the stage by finding a hard surface in your home to wrap on, and gather all of your tools before you start: double-sided tape, scissors, ribbon, tissue, and boxes. Choose gift wrap that features a design that is proportionate in size to the box—small designs for small boxes and large designs for those big packages. Be sure to keep the personality of the recipient in mind. Do they love animals? Sports? A particular color? Wrapping their packages with a personal touch lets them know you really care. And remember, if you’re traveling this holiday season and aren’t able to take advantage of our Gift Wrapping events in the airports, be sure you travel with unwrapped presents to allow for a smooth travel experience! As a former Southwest intern and current employee at The Container Store, it’s fun to see our two special and fun companies come together to bring some unexpected cheer to travelers this holiday season. See you at the airport! Courtney Shaver, The Container Store

Two important events took place in aviation today – both of which conjored mixed feelings in me. 1. The British High Court declared illegal the potential X-mas strike by British Airways‘ Unite union. The good news is that this promises hassle-free travel for almost a million BA travelers over the holiday period. The downside is that the union is keen on re-grouping to go on strike early next year. 2. It was the last day at work for Paula Berg, the force behind the successful new media brand strategy of Southwest Airlines for the past decade. She’s leaving to move back with the true love of her life – the mountains. So again, a bitter-sweet news. You know those National Geographic “Best Pictures of the Year” e-mails? You tend to get them around the holiday time, and you’re always inspired to forward them to your mom, your grandma, even your fellow coworkers. It’s one of the few viral emails that’s truly organic, and isn’t annoying like most chain emails. (I’m talking to you, “Forward and your wish will come true!!” emails…) During one of our weekly brainstorms in the “Magic Factory” room (named by Ms. Paula Berg herself), we decided the Southwest Airlines Flickr group needed its own annual awards, by golly! We assembled a taskforce of plane spotters, photo enthusiasts, and other random passers-by, and picked our favorite 20 Flickr photos for 2009. These photos represent what’s great about Southwest Airlines: colorful livery, beautiful cities, happy people, and a general aura of zaniness. Our winners range from professional photographers to Southwest Employees to a Food Technologist! (Not exactly sure what that job is, but it sounds awesome.) Our winners not only get worldwide acclaim and adoration from their fellow peers, but also a roundtrip ticket on Southwest…which we hope will involve some serious picture-taking. Congratulations to all of our winners! If you have an amazing Southwest photo to share, I suggest you add it to our photostream today: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nutsaboutsouthwest/ Please visit our Flickr page to see all of the winners and their other wonderful photographs!

from Sky Talk by Star-Telegram I saw this on WFAA-8 on Monday night but finally have the time to post this funny little video. Apparently, earlier this fall, Air New Zealand challenged Southwest Airlines to see if the Dallas-based carrier could top the Kiwi’s air safety video where its flight attendants have their uniforms painted on their bodies.
