In the last 14 days, I have traveled through 4 states covering 4 airports, 2 airlines, and 3 different hotels. Over the course of these trips, I have noticed that how an organization treats its customers has even more impact than I thought. Let’s start with the airlines. Most of the travel was on Southwest Air. to read more, visit: http://vitaminch.com/blogs/2009/11/23/14-days/

By Rachel Emma Silverman Like many other Americans, we’re flying out to the East Coast to my mom’s house for Thanksgiving. While I am really looking forward to spending time with family and friends, I am decidedly not looking forward to the journey there and back with an almost-two-year-old during a peak travel period. to read more, visit: http://blogs.wsj.com/juggle/2009/11/20/over-the-river-and-through-the-woods-to-holiday-travel-we-go/

The Dallas Business Journal recognized our own Vice President General Counsel Madeleine Johnson at its “Best Corporate Counsel Awards 2009” event held last Thursday evening. She received the award that honors a General Counsel who has been in office less than two years—but has had an immediate and effective impact on the company. Congratulations to Madeleine!

Thank you Southwest Airlines for allowing pets to travel one way versus round trip this Thanksgiving holiday. Please explain to your patrons as to the reasoning to allow a pet to leave without incident from Love Field, and why the pet would be denied boarding in Little Rock, Arkansas on the return leg? She still weighs 12 lbs and did not eat too much turkey on Thanksgiving day. Her travel bag is a Sherpa and as always is major airline approved for pet travel. She has been a frequent traveler for over 5 years. It is also very disheartening that no assistance was offered to swap tickets for me onto American Airlines. It was very humiliating and upsetting to be stranded in an airport with the possibilty of not making it home. I realize that these are tough economic times, but I suspect that American Airlines is very thankful this Thanksgiving holiday that your inconsistent application of your travel policy contributes to their financial health. The inconsistent application of the policy could be due to the ticket agent's inexperience with checking in less than 6 pets in his entire Southwest career. When we see the billboards toting clever advertisements for Luv of Southwest Airlines, we will ponder on what to be thankful for this holiday season. Sorry Southwest, American Airlines out classed you on this trip!

All this week, Denver International Airport (DEN) is rewarding passengers who get “caught” recycling with gift certificates for airport shops and restaurants. The promotion is in honor of America Recycle Days, which officially took place on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009. The promotion runs from today (Mon. 11/16/09) through Friday (11/20/09) and the way to win is to get caught in the act of recycling something by one of the airport’s Environmental Services team members who will be combing the main Jeppesen Terminal and the three concourses looking for passengers who are recycling. to read more, visit: http://stuckattheairport.com/2009/11/16/win-prizes-for-getting-caught-recycling-at-denver-intl-airport/

Southwest Airlines confirms that passengers are NOT avoiding travel today, Friday the 13th. Traditional superstitions are cast aside by many travelers looking for a low fare and great Customer Service. Initial reports indicate that Customers are not avoiding row 13 on The Southwest Airlines fleet today, nor has the date prevented flying altogether. In fact, the bag fees charged by other airlines are proving to be much scarier than Customers’ superstitions, driving travelers to find good luck on Southwest Airlines. In addition to Southwest Airlines’ Bags Fly Free policy, the carrier also announced that it will not charge a fee for throwing salt over one’s shoulder and will even allow black cats to travel onboard with its new pet fare, as long as they are carried in an appropriate carrier. The airline is recommending that Customers carefully wrap mirrors in bubble wrap to avoid breakage and seven years of bad luck. Customers feeling particularly lucky today are headed to popular casino destinations. Some report being bold enough to bet on number 13 at the Roulette table. About Southwest Airlines After 38 years of service, Southwest Airlines, the nation’s leading low-fare carrier, continues to stand above other airlines—offering a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service. At Southwest Airlines, bags fly free. Customers can check their first two bags at no extra charge (size and weight limits apply). Southwest is the most productive airline in the sky and offers Customers a comfortable traveling experience with all premium leather seats and plenty of legroom. In response to a call for help feeding Denver's poor and homeless population during the holidays and beyond, Southwest Airlines today announced a $50,000 donation to the Denver Rescue Mission, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing food, shelter, clothing, and rehabilitation services to the estimated 11,000 homeless people in Denver. The donation is the largest turkey donation in the Denver Rescue Mission's history, and the food will be distributed to families at this year's Thanksgiving Banquet-in-a-Box and be served at this year's Great Thanksgiving Banquet. Additional turkeys will be distributed to families in need through churches and other non-profits across the Denver Metro area. "Southwest Airlines is committed to Denver, and our commitment includes helping the less fortunate. In these challenging economic times, we're grateful for the opportunity to step forward to support the Denver Rescue Mission," said Dave LaPorte, Southwest's Station Manager in Denver. "By supporting something so close to the hearts and minds of our Denver Customers and local Employees, we're making an investment to help strengthen our community." The Denver Rescue Mission will serve the turkeys purchased by Southwest and other donors beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 25, during the Great Thanksgiving Banquet, an annual event hosted by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter. Additional items needed for the Thanksgiving food boxes include canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned pumpkin, boxed stuffing, canned cranberries, and canned yams. Donations can be dropped off at the Denver Rescue Mission's Lawrence Street Shelter at the corner of Park Avenue and Lawrence Street. "By stepping up to the plate with the largest turkey donation in the Denver Rescue Mission's history, at a time when other local companies have been forced to cut back, Southwest Airlines has demonstrated a strong commitment to the Denver community," said Brad Meuli, president and CEO of the Denver Rescue Mission. "When Southwest Airlines says they care about Denver, they're not talking turkey. We are extremely grateful for the significant commitment of cash and volunteer time from Southwest Employees, just when we needed it most." To read a guest blog post from Meuli talking about what the donation means to the Denver Rescue Mission, visit: www.nutsaboutsouthwest.com. Southwest Airlines Employees from Denver also will volunteer at the Denver Rescue Mission to help prepare for this year's Great Thanksgiving Banquet. Southwest encourages its Employees to get involved in the communities they serve through its Share the Spirit program, which helps the airline's Employees make a difference in cities across the U.S.

Today's flight from Chicago Midway to Salt Lake International via Southwest Airlines offered a pleasant diversion -- Wi-Fi (for a price) above 10,000 feet. While there are no electrical outlets, those with charged batteries are sure to have access for at least an hour or so. This might justify the purchase of additional battery packs for business class laptop users. During the test period, the costs range from $2 to $12. The signal was a strong 5 bars most of the time. The login screen was simple and quick with industry standard secure server credit card processing. to read more, visit: http://blog.dearmyrtle.com/2009/11/wi-fi-on-southwest-airlines.html

Hi RV,
I have confirmed with southwest.com that reservations only require one letter in the first name and two letters in the last name. I am not sure why you could not book with only initials in the first name column, as that is acceptable.
If you only have one name such as BJ and that is it, like Cher or Madonna, and you have no last name, then they have to book with BJ as the last name and FNU for the first name. This is TSA and Customs standard requirements, as Southwest is unable to book or process only one name. So Cher would book as Cher/FNU.
If you have any additional questions, please visit http://www.southwest.com/travel_center/security_procedures.html or call our Customer Relations at (214) 792-4223
Thank you!

Ms. VanAxen is so right!!! Charleston (CHS) airport has unreasonably high airfares, as there is no competition. We would appreciate having an airline such as Southwest move into our area. The Charleston area is booming even in this economy with new large corporations, like Boeing and Google, recently establishing in the area. We recently relocated here from the Orlando area and truly miss the good service and good fares offered by Southwest Airlines.
