I also booked 4 flights (2 for Hawaii to take my wife as a surprise and 2 for a business trip) in October 2019 for travel in November thru January. I had to cancel these flights so I received credits that had to be used by October 2020. No problem. I promised my wife we would use the credits to fly to Hawaii. As a note, at the time I booked these flights I had a companion pass so thank heavens all i had to pay for my wife was the cost of the tax which is refundable, however not my $800. Basically this gave me 11 months to use the credits to take my wife to Hawaii or if that wasn’t possible i could fly anywhere on SWA’s extensive network with thousands of flights offered. Wrong! 2 months later here came COVID. At the time SWA made the decision to extend expiration dates for credits that were to expire prior to September 7, 2020. This was based, on forecasts on how long the pandemic would last and how severe it would be. Then here it came, full force. As time went on, almost all travel related companies kept changing their policies to further guarantee the safety of their customers. Their forecasts for how long and how severe it would be was underestimated. Most of the changes by airlines affected their income by extending time to use travel funds. All except SWA! Hypocrites that the are - their saying “we put you first, your wallet second” is a farce as they put their income first. Now I only had 9 months to use my credits, all during the height of the pandemic. In addition my original destination, Hawaii, was shut down for almost the entire period. In addition my doctor advised me not to travel by air due to my health problems as well as my age. I called SWA and explained this to them and was told to submit this in writing. I did this twice and each time received the very terse rely that basically said “tough luck, you knew the terms when you bought the tickets, only we can change the terms by not offering the original destination you purchased the tickets for and now offer fewer flights to fewer destinations. Live with it. However, we really care about you and look forward to serving you on future flights with us.” Wow, they really care about my health, safety and well being. I can’t wait to fly with them. NOT!!!! Once again, talk is cheap but actions speak louder than words. As a side note, American Airlines extended coupons I had with them until the end of 2021 that were set to expire after September 2020.

What about requiring crew and passengers to wear masks? It only takes one asymptomatic Covid-19 passenger on a clean airplane to cause issues for others. When I feel comfortable, I will be flying to Houston to help my daughter choose a wedding dress. Please know that I will be choosing who I fly based on their mask policy and will opt for the airline that is requiring them.
