For us schedule freaks, your essays on Southwest service changes, especially important in an era of no printed system timetables or downloadable was either was always special and interesting. My bet was not other airline (at least in the US) would ever be that daring. I still miss services like Chicago to Islip, but at least I knew what was happening. Thank you for taking the time to write these

Here is hoping Southwest puts the city PDF feature back in your internet schedules so that we can easily compare schedules to different cities such as Newark and New York LaGuardia without having to fill in another box on the screen.

Amy thanks for keeping up the Friday Flashback tradition. Southwest and you honor Brian Lusk's work by keeping up this work. Southwest can not be successful unless it maintains its company culture, so this is important work. And for aviation (and train) geeks like me it is a fun way to end the week.

It is fun to see where some of the used aircraft came from. I always like the SWA plane I flew which had two lavs in the back, so smaller lines. Probably bad for SWA as it may had one less row of seats.

The seating in the picture looks it is 2 seats aisle, 3 seats, rather than 3 and 3. Is that right? or is it a photo graphic allusion?

Congratulations to Herb and Southwest for this award. Safety culture is a difficult process and most be supported at the top and strengthened at the bottom. Southwest great safety record is a tribute to this and this award was definitely earned.

I grew up near Buffalo, watched the airport grow and wane over the years. If Southwest did not find a business opportunity there, the airport would just serve a few airline hubs with an occassional flight to Florida. So Southwest with its service to the West is really important to the business market in Buffalo.

This is wonderful story of the human spirit. Humbling too to those of us who are more fortunate. Stores like this are a wonderful anecdote for much ofthe cynical times we must all live through.

When I first moved to Chicago in 1978, Midway had two flights a day. When the planes were not operating, security left the airport. You were free to wander around the the old terminal anywhere you wanted. Thanks for this flashback and the others you have posted.

Your posts are always appreciated, particularly since there are no timetables published, for which to learn where Southwest is currently flying. This gives ideas for trips.

Thanks for the schedule updates. I really hope that your new schedule optimzer does significantly improve costs and profits. 2009 has been a struggling year for Southwest and its important any company to respond way to challenges. I most appreciate the schedule updates. It really interesting how the media picks this up and put information out on the January schedule changes. Your marketing department must be jealous.

I had hours of fun, searching your timetable for unique nonstops such as Ontario, CA to Nashville, TN and those rare flights which traveled every day of the week. Usually they were out of LA. I will download the entire schedule, and follow Brian Lusks posts to find out what's new.

The most important thing Southwest can do is remain profitable. If it doesn't, their goes my luggage fees and many other costs. Southwest passenger load drops in this economy is much less than its competitors (luggage fees do manner). I suspect if you were compare Southwest flight discreases to other airlines over the past 12 months, the other airlines would have much bigger decreases.

For us schedule junkies, it is really kick to see your schedule changes summarized every so often.
Just a thought for those Islip Airport worshipers, which I am one also. Guess what, if more New Yorkers start taking Southwest at LaGuardia, some of those new passengers are bound to show at Islip too with its wider range of services. So maybe Southwest will see more businees at Islip, not less, because of LaGuardia and maybe there will be more flights there rather than less. Islip lovers, its ok to think happy thoughts also.

I always find it amazing that Southwest is so communicate about its flight schedules and give such details It is truly important that Southwest continue to be a profitable business, and adjust with the times, otherwise it will not be there long term. I agree with many here, that with airlines contracting, Southwest will find profitable growth opportunities out there.

I have switched to Southwest because of its reliability. I like to look at airline schedules, and I note Southwest does not try to send its entire fleet at airport within in five minutes of each other like most hub airlines do. Interesting if a SWA flight is scheduled to leave when another airline sends out its entire fleet, 15 minutes or more is added to schedule flight time to accommodate that surge.

Interesting post as many airlines due everything they can discourage checking bags. The key issue of course is getting luggage through the system on a timely basis. You can help passengers be more comfortable with this process, in situation where there is long lines to check luggage (see Midway every morning, Monday-Saturday) by posting have much time before flight time you need for the luggage to make the flight at the check in counter.
I bet a lot of people in long lines could make but leave worried that the luggage will not make the flight.
