Dear Southwest,
Have you considered integrating education material onboard Imua One (and other planes servicing Hawaii) that invite visitors to be respectful of Hawaii's land and inhabitants? I am a resident of Kauai and I think this would go so far in alleviating some of the stress caused by tourists. I can think of no better place to extend an invitation to visitors than on planes, which are the gateway to the islands.
Last year, Air New Zealand created a clever and beautiful safety video that invites visitors to act as guardians while visiting New Zealand. While I know Southwest doesn’t have seat-back screens, education material like this could appear in other formats. As one of the major airlines carrying visitors to Hawaii, Southwest has a responsibility to help educate visitors on how to be respectful guests in the islands. Visitors who are unaware can be a disruptive and even painful presence here. So much of this disruption could be averted by some simple and helpful education, guided by Native Hawaiians and cultural practitioners, whose home we are guests in whether we live here or visit.
Please take another vital step toward honoring Southwest’s relationship with the Hawaiian islands and the people here by including some simple education for visitors about how travel respectfully.
Thanks and mahalo,
Kelly
