I am not so sure about that - I fly different airlines and pre-board on all of them. My Hawaiian airlines flight had more pre-boarders than any Southwest flight I have been on and we had assigned seats on that one too.

How do you know that just because a person can walk a short distance that they don't have struggles? I have talked to people in wheelchairs that have back issues and can't stand or walk for long periods of time, but can walk. I have also seen flight attendants hold seats in the first or second row for passengers that have pre-discussed their needs with the gate agent - such as what you described.

Customers of size who have a second seat also get to pre-board. People on the outside never really know what is going on with each individual. I am also not sure that the amount of wheel chairs are going to go down as much as people think they are.
