Never ruin a perfectly good apology with an excuse.
The man did not get any bigger between the time you let him on the plane and when you made him get up and walk off it in front of everyone. To publicly humiliate someone and then try to pretend it was a safety issue makes me wonder what else you would try to cover up.
Something like this should not be an arbitrary decision left to a pilot who may just be mad at the world that day because some fat guy cut him off in traffic or bagged his daughter.
Airlines have rules for size and weight limitations on baggage. If it's truly important do the same thing with passengers. This is not rocket science.
You should be ashamed.
The issue is not whether he was too large, it's your total lack of a cohesive and fair policy that is enforceable without this long "walk of shame" that has become the hallmark of how Southwest treats it's passengers.
