I understand the difficulty in enforcing the Customer of Size policy, however, I question why the gate agent allowed him to travel standby on another flight if 2 seats weren't available.
The gate agent should have seen from Mr. Smith's original reservation that he had purchased an extra seat and therefore should not have allowed him to travel on the earlier flight. I understand the voucher as a gesture of goodwill, but a hundred bucks? I know that larger amounts have been given to passengers for smaller issues before.
