I'd just book a one way trip for that leg.

Did you mean buy 2? One way to USA and the other way to CR?

Solution

Why are you trying to book this a a multi city trip?

You could book SJO /DCA (which stops in MCO)  . and then

DCA / SJO as the second trip

I marked solution, but otherwise if you really are stopping in MCO each way, then book SJO-MCO as one RT and then book MCO-DCA as a second "nested" round trip inside of the other round trip. This wouldn't be what you need to do if the MCO is only a connection though - do what @dfwskier is saying and the connection is "built in" to the itinerary, you don't have to explicitly book connections like that unless you are getting out of the airport and need a longer layover.

There are limits to how you can book.

Multi-City trips involve only two destinations, not three.

International flights often require a clear departure and return ticket. Southwest may wait until you are at the ticket counter to check when there is uncertainty. One-way'ing the non-international portion may work best.
