Is there a way to link reservations with my friend that booked on her own?  I just am trying to avoid getting separated in case one of our flights changes.

You could call and ask, but I am not aware of a way to accomplish this without booking both people on one reservation.

I don't think there is a way to link to someone else's account. You can check on the status of any  flight by clicking on the flight status button on the initial southwest.com page.
