Is it possible to receive a flight credit in lieu of a refund? I booked an anytime ticket and it is not cheaper but instead of receiving a refund to my credit card, is it possible to receive a flight credit instead?

I believe that you will get a refund due to the standard procedure. However, you can always book another flight with the refund, cancel it, then retain the flight credit if you choose a lesser accommodation.

Airline aside, isn't cash better than a credit?

When you go to cancel the ticket you should get a choice for refund or travel credit.
I'm not sure what scenario would make the travel credit better but that wasn't your question.
