Hi

My son ( who is 17)  will be traveling unaccompanied from LAX on a direct domestic flight . Does he need a government issued ID to checkin and for TSA security ?

No ID required for Young Travelers under 18.

However being so close if the TSA agents think he's older then they might ask, if you have anything that would be useful to have in his pocket to prove age or identity wouldn't be a bad idea.

Kind of a chicken and egg situation, if he doesn't need it, but then gets questioned about not needing it then he might have to show something to verify that he doesn't need it.

Supporting document here wouldn't have to be a TSA item, anything might help support the case if questioned.

TL:DR: technically not required for 17 y/o but if you have something available, why not bring it?
