Water Ski as Baggage

I'm curious if anyone can share their experience in traveling with a water ski (or snow ski).  The way I read the baggage policies (https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/baggage/special-luggage-pol.html#baggage_special_lug...), a ski can be included as one of the bags that fly free as long as it's 50 lbs. or less, since there are no size restrictions.  But I'd like to hear someone confirm having experienced that, because I'd prefer not to show up at the airport and be charged.

Thanks.

I've travelled with snow skis that were over 62 inches long, and can confirm that I was not charged extra for them
