Can't find definite response Through July, Southwest has promised to sell only 2/3rds of the plane, effectively allowing for empty middle seats, to address social distancing needs. As a family, however, you can sit next to each other if you desire, including in middle seats if necessary. Masks are currently required onboard. Hope this helps!

As you probably know already, middle seats are open through July. And social distancing will be followed during boarding. But apparently Covid has a parachute and jumps out just before landing. Because social distancing isn't the slightest concern during deboarding. Amazing how mindless people get as soon as that seatbelt sign goes out. Sigh... even a global pandemic can't remind them to relax and be the slightest bit courteous. I hope the FAs will start reminding people.... hopefully with just enough SW snark to make them think twice before making a mosh pit in the aisle.

That list is only relevant if you book late. If I book 2 weeks out, then I might get a wanna get away price, meaning less populated. Understanding that it's not just, breath, that you can contract it from, all could be on hands, clothes, (we now know shoes track the virus in), and so on. In most cases, I'm sure all people will take precautions with not touching you, but inadvertent touching and rubbing happen. I've had a middle seat and have gotten accidental contact from both sides. Unless gloves are passed out as you board and discarded as you exit, there can be a contraction of the virus that doesn't come from a breath or a cough. I'm not taking sides, (well a little bit) but I'd not sit next to someone right I didn't come with, sorry. You do have a point, and we appreciate your comment.

It’s extremely unlikely that flights on or around Memorial Day will even be over 50% capacity. Now a month later at the end of June it’d be more likely to be over 50% and fuller as many routes have been whittled down to 1-2 flights a day compared to 10 previously. You can always message SW on Facebook or Twitter and ask how many seats are available on a given flight and they’ll tell you. I asked and they said 66 seats were available on one flights and 123 on another.

I want an answer to the SAME question asked by GCStanley... if the plane is sold out or almost full, will Southwest truly expect people who don't know one another to sit side by side??? It's one thing to say, gosh folks, just spread out. But I have a flight on Memorial Day. I'm expecting that there will be passengers for every seat that Southwest has available. So... in order to maximize revenue, WILL SOUTHWEST IGNORE SOCIAL DISTANCING AND REQUIRE PASSENGERS TO SIT BESIDE PASSENGERS THAT THEY DON'T KNOW???
