Thanks for that info! That's great to know. Can I make a second free same-day change, which I might want to do if I can't get an A1-15 upgraded boarding position on the first flight I changed to? The boarding position seems to be the one downside of the same-day change, but I have the Rapid Rewards Priority credit card, so I can upgrade my boarding position from C whatever to A1-15 up to four times for free. I haven't flown much since they started letting us buy the upgraded boarding position online, but it has been available on all my flights since then.

I have my first WGA+ flight next month (I always flew WGA before). I am hoping to do a free same-day change to an earlier flight, if available, but I want to make sure I understand how this works ahead of time. From what I read on Southwest's FAQ page about this, it seems like I can make the change beginning at 12:00 am the day of the flight and can do so the same way I would normally change a flight--finding the reservation in my account and clicking "change flight." Is that a correct understanding? Also, is it best to make the change as early as possible within the same-day window to maximize the chances of getting a seat on my desired flight?
I would greatly appreciate any insight from people who have done this before or who otherwise know how it works. Thanks!

The flights were purchased with points directly through Southwest, so that is definitely not the problem. I should have noted that in my OP given the error message language which I too noticed falsely indicates otherwise. The inability to change/cancel online is why I will probably never buy a Southwest flight through a third party. I made that mistake in 2019 when I used Southwest Vacations not realizing that it was another company.

Unfortunately, that wouldn't explain it since I verified the flight numbers remained the same. But I appreciate the idea.

It doesn't appear that Southwest made any changes to the one I want to change. The times of the flights (it's a one-way with one stop) and flight numbers are the same. Southwest has always emailed me when it made changes and all that did is give me the option to change without paying an increase in fare. It never blocked me from changing online.

I am trying to explore changes for a flight in October, but, when I click change, I get the below error message. I get the error message below that when I try to cancel. The same is true for two other October flights. There's no obvious reason for this to be happening, as I never changed these by calling Southwest or for free due to a Southwest change nor were they purchased through a promo. All other flights (I have flights in November and January booked) do not show these errors when I press change or cancel to test them. Has anyone else encountered this issue recently? I'm wondering if this is a system issue that will resolve itself soon or whether I should call Southwest. This has been going on since at least yesterday.

I think I know what is going on. Do you see this message above the part of the screen you posted?
When Southwest changes a flight, they give you an option to change the flight without a change of fare. Until sometime last month, a change in either leg of a roundtrip flight seemed to allow you to make this type of change to either leg. Now, however, the system seems to limit you to the leg Southwest changed (and even if Southwest coincidentally changed both legs, you have to make your changes separately). So, if only one leg was changed, the other leg is grayed out when you go to make a change. Also, with this type of change, you won't get a refund if the new flight is actually cheaper and would save you money through a normal change, which was also true when Southwest allowed you to change either leg with this type of change. Other than cancelling the leg you want to reprice and then rebooking at the lower price (which will result in two one-way tickets with different confirmation numbers-not a big deal IMO), I'm not sure how to solve this short of calling Southwest.
