“50 Years. One Heart. A History of Southwest in 50 Objects.”
Southwest Airlines is wrapping up its milestone 50th Anniversary year by releasing a one-of-a-kind commemorative history book, “50 Years. One Heart. A History of Southwest in 50 Objects.” Southwest fans can purchase this unique coffee-table book, which brings to life the Company’s colorful history, its corporate archives, and reflection of its People through photographs and moments from the carrier’s rich past, exclusively sold at Southwest® The Store. This special book also represents the exciting culmination of 50 years’ worth of iconic stories as the Company closes out its first five decades.
Southwest is celebrating its incredible first 50 years by showcasing a stunning collection of 50 unique objects, outfits, and artifacts (photographed by Southwest Sr. Photographer Stephen M. Keller and Southwest Sr. Designer Brianna Juda), accompanied by short stories from the Company’s inspiring history and a special foreword by current Chairman and CEO Gary Kelly as he prepares to transition into his role as Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors in early 2022.
Throughout its first half-century, Southwest has experienced some amazing wins and also faced some tough challenges. As the Company closes one chapter of its history and looks to the next 50 years, the hope is that all readers of “50 Years. One Heart.” are inspired to remember and celebrate the past while looking to the future with hope and resilience.
This is the first of two special books launching in celebration of Southwest’s 50th year of service—more information coming on the second book in early 2022.

People often wonder if Southwest Airlines actually lives up to its reputation as the great Employer many claim that it is. Well, we want to give you an exclusive look into one of many special Southwest Culture events so you can decide for yourself!
A group of Southwest Team Members recently gathered together at Headquarters in Dallas to celebrate Diwali, a Southeast Asian celebration known as the “Festival of Lights.” Southwest is always encouraging Employees to own the Company’s Culture, so it is not unusual for one of SWA’s many Employee-led interest groups to plan something extraordinary! This specific event was organized by the Southwest Desi Group (Employees and Contractors of Southeast Asian descent), in association with Mindtree Ltd., Cigniti Technologies Inc., and Loyalty Methods.
The Diwali celebration featured traditional Indian cuisine, music, dance performances, and attire. Professional henna artists even came out to decorate attendees’ hands with beautiful designs! But the most meaningful aspect of the event was the fact that everyone in attendance was there to celebrate cultural diversity. Attendees ranged from Individual Contributors to Senior Leaders and everyone embraced the idea that we can learn from one another in a work environment that allows us to showcase our true selves.
Diwali is a celebration of light. Because the Southwest Desi Group took the initiative to organize this event, they were able to share the light of their own culture as an integral part of the overarching Southwest Corporate Culture!
