You qualified for family boarding since you had a child under the age of 7. You should have paid attention to the boarding announcements, which apparently you did not.
While Southwest could have done better, you started this whole chain of events by not listening to the boarding announcements.

I have a potential workaround for you - go to the "activate free texting" and do that first if you are on a phone or tablet and then try the ALP login again. I had this get stuck before too but it ended up working if I did the other activities in a certain order and then tried to login for the free benefit internet again.
But sometimes it works from the beginning and I'm not sure what the difference is.

Companion pass is what it means. They're traveling with you as a Companion. Shame is on you for not reading the fine print. There's a saying, "Ignorance of the law isn't an excuse". Not taking the time to read the fine print of a fine program allowing someone YOU designate free travel, is your faux pas.
