So what you are saying is that there is no carry on limit as long as it fits??? It could take up a whole bin above a row of 3 seats and that is ok? Why have rules at all?

Thanks for your response, but caring means addressing an obvious sore point with many passengers who fly frequently and who believe in rules and order, not chaos, which this policy often engenders. Southwest is the only airline I fly that does this and apparently wants the dual benefit of the extra revenue from passengers purchasing earlier boarding without the down side of "disappointing" families and friends who want to be together. Trying to please everyone generally ends up pleasing no one.

I did just that and complained to SWA after my trip with multiple "saved" seats. It fell on deaf ears. I was emailed back that "like" families sitting together, the perfect politically correct response, no attention to the finances of those of us who pay for earlier boarding, want to deplane quickly for connections, etc. I wouldn't mind so much if at the end of the flight, passengers got up and left the plane in an expeditious manner, but, alas, they do not. I fly other airlines whenever I can. They just do not care.

I agree wholeheartedly! I was on a flight form PBI to BWI yesterday. The flight was completely full and we were told over and over again to take the first empty seat seen to get out of the aisle so the flight could depart. I paid for early boarding and went to six middle seats and told they were being "saved". I ended up in the back of the plane with the "C" group, I would presume. I will complain to SWA concerning this. They need to enforce rules if they want to continue an open seating policy..

My wife and I booked a flight through Midway to attend an important ceremony. The tickets were booked months ago using Rapid Rewards points we had, purchased, and transferred. The flight was to leave 5:50 AM, transfer in Chicago. At 9:45 PM the night before, we received a text stating our flight leaving Midway was cancelled! We called to reschedule, were told this was due to the “anticipation of bad weather “. The had no replacement flight to offer us. We were up the entire night finding two replacement flights using American, at a cost of over $900! I called customer service and called them on the fact that all incoming and outbound flights through Midway were happening and on time. I was told that Southwest operates “differently “. And all they could do is refund my points and Early Bird”. This is the third time we have been canceled last minute with no good explanation or compensation. BEWARE!!!

How do you know what the person wanting the seat you saved has paid?

I agree, how does this poster know what the fellow passengers he is preventing from sitting in a seat he saved has paid for their ticket or what "level" they are at. Sense of entitlement!

SWA should handle this, not hide from it, and create a fair solution for passengers instead of pitting one against another.

As a new poster, I wonder if this board is just a venting opportunity or does SWA care?

As usual, those who "game" the system ruin it for the truly needy. I wish SWA would just assign seats, then every passenger knows what they have purchased and where they belong.

Speaks again for buying assigned seats and paying for what you get, then.

There should be no seat saving. If you want to get on together, buy your tickets together, pay for EB if you want, and get on together. This is out of hand as is the whole pre-boarding mess. I marvel at how the lame can suddenly walk after a flight on the airplane. Wheelchair on, sit in the first rows and take up an entire overhead bin, then take their time getting their belongings and "jumping" off the plane at the end of the flight. This delays those of us trying to make connections or other commitments. When I can, I now fly jet blue. I purchase the seat I want and do not have to fight for it with preboards in wheelchairs, whether needed or not, and entire families boarding with one child using family boarding. Fair is fair, I wish SWA would enforce their rules.

I pay early bird each time and expect to be able to occupy any open seat. Saving one for a spouse or travel companion is tolerable, not for an entire family or travel party, be reasonable!

I agree totally, I fly SWA more than 20 times per year and believe one saved seat, though not really fair either, is tolerable, more than one is not. If you want to get on the plane together, pay as I do every time I fly.
