Southwest Debuts the 737-800: Warrior One!

Aviator C

Many of you have been following our updates as our new 737-800 moved through the construction process and through the first test flight on February 23. One of those steps was the “in-person” introduction today to members of the media, Southwest Employees, and guests at events hosted in Dallas.

The day kicked off with a media preview of the new aircraft, followed by an Employee celebration. At the media preview, Southwest Executives Mike Van de Ven and Brian Hirshman displayed the aircraft to reporters, showcasing the highlights of the -800’s features like the new Boeing Sky Interior, as well as discussing how the -800 will allow us to add overwater routes and more capacity to slot-restricted airports. Boeing Vice President and Program Manager for the 737 Program, Bev Wyse, closed out the media presentation with a recap of Southwest’s long association with the 737.

Sun Warrior

Then the aircraft taxied over to the Employee event, where it was dedicated and named  Warrior One in salute of the Southwest Employees’ Warrior Spirit. The 737-800 will take our airline to new places and allow us compete in highly competitive, but highly restricted markets like LaGuardia, so it’s only fitting that we name it Warrior One to reflect that “can do” attitude.

This is a beautiful aircraft, and I know our Customers will love it, but it also plays an important strategic role in our future. Warrior One and the other -800s carry 175 passengers, which is a whopping 28 percent increase over our current fleet configuration.  Besides improving our unit costs per flight, the -800 gives us opportunities for longer-haul flying and schedule flexibility by adding capacity in those high-demand, slot-controlled, or gate-restricted airports.

Sky Interior

The Boeing Sky Interior offers a quieter, more comfortable environment for Customers with taller ceilings and more overhead bin space, improved operational security features, and ambient LED reading and ceiling lighting. Besides being more effective, the new interior is energy efficient. Also, our great Flight Attendants can match the lighting to the mood onboard the aircraft—subdued at night or bright and festive for a Las Vegas flight.

After the formal part of the event, Employees were allowed to tour the aircraft and see firsthand the new Boeing Sky Interior with its improved sidewalls, larger overheads, and new ceiling with mood lighting.

Confetti

After some final certifications, Warrior One and our second 737-800 will be set to enter scheduled service on April 11. I hope you all have a chance to fly on a brand new Southwest -800 very soon!

When it comes to domestic airlines, Southwest Airline is simply the Best.

I think that guy is the Delta CEO, so cut him some slack! I've been flying SW since our oldest son headed to the Naval Academy. SW had just started flying into BWI in '96. Within a couple of years I earned my first Companion Pass and my wife has been flying free ever since. I try my hardest to fly Southwest and have been known to fly into a city other than my final destination and rent a car for the final leg rather than fly on a competitor's airline. In the years since we started flying Southwest, my wife and I have been able to travel frequently to see our three kids and the grandchildren as well as extended family. We couldn't have afforded many of those trips if it hadn't been for the low fares, Rapid Rewards and Companion Passes from Southwest. Thank you Southwest for helping us build lasting memories with family.

I love Southwest Airlines. At 76 years young and have spent 45 years working for TWA and American Airlines and six years in the USAF I know from experience what makes a great airline. I'm not saying I'm over the hill at 76 but that I have in the last 50 years flown over many a hill. Thank you Southwest for making flying so enjoyable. Looking forward flying on the new 373-800.

I fly for a living, work..fly em all, SWA is by far on of my favorite. Nice new planes reasonable costs , most of the time you get a chuckle on the way. :)

I agree with Will. The new point system is good for the better availability for FF seating and points not expiring, but the points do not go very far unless you plan far ahead to catch the fares when they are most reasonable.

I love Southwest, but I am very upset that the flights from Islip, NY to Chicago/Midway have been discontinued. My grandchildren live in MN and it was so convenient for me to get there through Chicago from Islip, NY. I hope they will reconsider and start these flights up again.

I have been flying SWA since the 70's and have always enjoyed the upbeat attitude of all SWA employees. I am so glad the little airline from Texas has shown the world how to do things in the air! Keep It UP SWA! Okie from Tulsa

I am happy Southwest added an across water plane to their package. I wish with all the new amenities they would have widened the plane to accomodate a little larger seat capacity. The size 2 seats are not up to date with society. Otherwise I love, love, love Southwest airlines.

Another great feat for Southwest! I fly them over 30 round trip flights each year and they are incredible. No matter which flight I take their staff makes you welcome to be with them. I have even been on a flight with their CEO and he was just like everyone else on the flight, another passenger. Keep up the great job Southwest. All I can say is " I LUV SOUTHWEST"!!

Ignore the fellow with the bad attitude. We all love Southwest and appreciate their humor and bags fly free policies and all they do to make today's air travel much more tolerable. Just love them.

I love Southwest. It's my favorite airline. True, I don't fly that much but when I do, I fly Southwest. I can't comment on overseas airlines but Sothwest is easily hands down America's best airline. I have never ever had a bad flight. Kudos!

I love Southwest and it is my airline of choice, but Delta Airlines has been flying the 737-800 for seventeen years. Southwest has also had over-water capability in their 737-700 for some time. It is the aircraft that Delta flys to high altitude destinations in South America.

SWA is tops in my book. Been using them religiously where they fly. They are always on time and that is their goal as well as safely. Unfortunately things change. Their website is not as good as it was but it still beats all the others. And the best thing is no change fee!! The one thing that bothers me if the unused tickets are not transferable anymore. We fly to Fla from the north but not as frequent now that prices have gone up and cannot reuse ticket in husbands name or vice versa. SWA used to sit on my $$ but now I have to make sure I am going on scheduled trip or can go if cancel within a years time. Still SWA is better than all other airlines. They know how to run an airline business. Get in get out.

I also like to say that as a firefighter I have run into burning buildings a lot and have have almost been killed several times but funny I have a little fear of flying. My wife loves it and southwest and laughs at me all the time(SMILE) I like them to and am glad they are closer to cincinnati.

I like flying SWA. But I really wish they would go to ticketed seats. One more wish...Please add more flights to IAD. For me it's a long ride to BWI.

I don't fly real often, but I love Southwest. Great fares and you don't pay a fortunate for your bags!! I've never had a delayed flight . Each flight I've taken arrived on time or a bit early. The flight crew on each was outstanding. The crew makes one feel as though you're a well-loved member of their family.

I've been a fan since I used to travel home every Friday and the attendants in hot pants would give away drink coupons playing dollar bill poker and "who can show me a hole in their sock first?". SWA has always rocked...are you kidding me?

I am waiting for SWA to fly to Hilo, HI. I love SWA so much, we fly to CA and then fly Hawaiian Airlines to Hilo. Those who don't love SWA just don't get it... SW customer service is untouchable.

Congrats on the new planes! I can't wait to fly on one that goes to Aruba from SFO. Regarding Jason's comment. Oh please don't waste our time with your sour grapes comment. Southwest is by far the best airline - business or pleasure. The other airlines (United, Delta, etc.) that charge for bags and make families and pleasure travelors to sit in the back of the plane have should take heed. I looooove SWA!

I WOULD FLY SOUTHWEST ALL THE TIME IF I COULD FIND A FLIGHT TO SAN DIEGO, MANCHESTER NH, APPLETON WI.

Please, please, please start to fly into Memphis. Believe me you will get the passengers in and out. Right now passengers who love Southwest, as I do, have to go to Little Rock or to Nashville to fly Southwest Jet Blue flies into Memphis and now that you have merged can't you please bring Southwest there??? I could see my one and only grandson more often if you did. Thank you

Southwest is the best. I will never fly another airline in the domenstic market ever again. Besides great fares, awesome employees and crew, and no luggage fees, they try to accomodate anyone in every way they can. I missed my morning flight from Vegas a couple days ago and they happily booked me on another flight a couple of hours later the same day without any charges or fare differences! What more can I say? They have earned my business forever!

What a beautiful plane! I can not wait to be a passenger. But first I must thank my favorite airline for once again taking the very high road and choosing Boeing to supply the planes. I am not an isolationist but when a company is as good as Boeing it is great that they are supported by an airline that is truely great.

What I really love about SWA is the friendliness of ALL the employees that the public meets up with and the terrific sense of humor the hosts and hostesses have. Flying can be stressful but they always lighten your mental load!

I LOVE Southwest. besides being the best value, they care about their passengers. The last time I flew, we were two hours late taking off because of airport delays, which were beyond SWAs control, but they made sure that we made our connecting flights. I wound up getting home on time.

With a name like "Warrior 1" which is also a main "staple" yoga posture, Southwest may need to think about adding some in flight yoga programs to its Warrior 1 planes. I'm a yoga teacher and would be happy to help produce these! Let's make it happen! :-) Ali Kamen

What''s not to like about SW? The humor of the attendants as well as the pilots supplies enough levity to fly without a plane. They don't even have to give me peanuts to convince me to fly with them. I'd fly without the peanuts.

I can't remember the last time I flew on another airline. I fly from New Orleans to Jacksonville several times a year and do miss the non-stop flight in each direction that we enjoyed for quite a while. Recently my health has gone downhill quite rapidly and to have someone help me to and from the aircraft with a wheel chair. They have been so cooperative in accommodating my health problems; I can't thank them enough. Just to confirm how friendly and courtious the flight crew have been; I must relate something that happened last year in Birmingham when changing planes. There were an unusually large number of wheelchair early boards on the flight to Jacksonville that day and we had a fairly full flight. I was one of the last to be taken down the jet-way to board and was not really paying that much attention to the person who walked up to me to push me to the aircraft. When he spoke to me and I looked up the Captain asked if I minded if he took me to the plane. I said, sir I'd be honored to have you help me board. He said I don't get to do this very much and you might not feel that way by the time you get to the plane. We talked and laughed while going down the ramp and he suddenly ran the wheelchair into the wall; by accident, of coarse. He said I told you I don't do this very often and after we both laughed, I told him that I hope he can fly the plane better than he drives a wheel chair. The First Officer overheard the conversation and said don't worry sir, I taught him everything he knows. Needless to say we had a great flight and when we were deplaning he was waiting at the door to ask me if I thought he did a good job. I told him it was not too bad for a trainee; and the landing was pretty good also. It was a wonderfully memorable flight. Just keep up the great job you have been doing for 40 years. I apologize for taking so much blog space; but, I thought everyone would enjoy reading about my experience.

Hope Southwest adds more nonstops from San Francisco and San Jose. And please keep your current configuration and boarding strategies. Don't ever degenerate to the level of United Airlines.

Anyone know if this plane will be flying out of Chicago Midway? SWA does fly nonstop to LaGuardia from there. I wonder if there would be any other destinations from MDW, if any ...
