Companion Random Question

Hi SWA Community, 

Just got companion again, and I am a little rusty on the quirks. 

1) There is no way to add a companion while booking my own flight, correct?

2) Since I am adding a companion AFTER I book my flight, they will have their own confirmation number. Will we still get consecutive boarding positions? 
3) If the answer to number 2 is yes, and I have A-List Preferred, do they even need to check in?
