  You will receive your companion pass on the first day it is effective. At that point you will be able to add your companion and your companion  may take flights with you.

Your would’ve booked a flight (2 one ways or a RT) on 43-4/5 for travel by the deadline you will receive the companion pass in August valid for travel through September 30th meaning travel must be completed by that deadline for the companion pass to apply. 

coming back after the deadline book 2 one ways that way on the outbound flight you can use the companion pass and just pay for the return

You'd have to fly by 9/30, the pass would be inactive on any later flight.
