Question about using points to book flights

I was sure I'd read this somewhere but can't seem to find it again. Am I correct that if I use my points to book a flight, that it will not reduce my progress towards A list or companion pass? In other words, the points don't need to accrue, they only need to be earned?

That is correct. Earned points always count towards CP even if they are used to buy a points flight.
