Southwest Airlines' Flight Simulator Technicians, represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT), have ratified a new four-year contract. The agreement rewards Southwest's highly skilled and productive IBT-represented Employees with fixed rate increases, variable rate increases tied to Company performance, ratification and reliability bonuses.
Despite an enormous demand for pilot training in the flight simulators—more than 50,000 hours in 2014—Southwest's Simulator Technicians have maintained the equipment at virtually 100% reliability. Such dependability has allowed the Company to train new-hire pilots, upgrade hundreds of new Captains, and finalize the AirTran integration, all the while completing annual recurrent training for nearly 8000 pilots.
"I would like to thank our Simulator Technicians, along with their IBT representatives, for their continued partnership," said Russell McCrady, Senior Director Labor Relations. "Their outstanding work and dedication to Southwest Airlines allowed us to reach an agreement that rewards them and helps maintain a high level of productivity."
The contract honors Southwest's commitment to provide our Employees a stable work environment. Further, it supports Southwest's core vision of being the World's Most Loved, Most Flown, and Most Profitable Airline.

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE:LUV) (the "Company") today reported its first quarter 2015 results:
Record first quarter net income, excluding special items 1 , of $451 million, or $.66 per diluted share, compared with first quarter 2014 net income, excluding special items, of $126 million, or $.18 per diluted share. This represented a 266.7 percent increase from first quarter 2014 and exceeded the First Call consensus estimate of $.65 per diluted share.
Record first quarter net income of $453 million, or $.66 per diluted share, which included $2 million (net) of favorable special items, compared with first quarter 2014 net income of $152 million, or $.22 per diluted share, which included $26 million (net) of favorable special items.
Record first quarter operating income of $780 million. Excluding special items, record first quarter operating income of $770 million, resulting in an operating margin 2 of 17.4 percent.
Strong free cash flow 1 of $859 million used to return $381 million to Shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, and to repay $51 million in debt and capital lease obligations.
Return on invested capital, before taxes and excluding special items (ROIC) 1 , for the 12 months ended March 31, 2015, of 25.6 percent, compared with 14.2 percent for the 12 months ended March 31, 2014.
Gary C. Kelly, Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer, stated, "We are thrilled to report an exceptionally strong first quarter 2015 earnings performance. Our net income, excluding special items, of $451 million, or $.66 per diluted share, far surpasses any first quarter profit in our history and represents our eighth consecutive quarter of record profits. Our first quarter 2015 operating income, excluding special items, increased over 200 percent year-over-year to $770 million, resulting in a first quarter record 17.4 percent operating margin. Our ROIC for the 12 months ended March 31, 2015, was an outstanding 25.6 percent. These superb results earned our 47,000 hard-working and dedicated Employees a first quarter record $126 million profitsharing accrual, up 334.5 percent from first quarter 2014.
"Total operating revenues were a first quarter record $4.4 billion, driven by a 6.2 percent year-over-year increase in passenger revenues and double-digit year-over-year percentage growth in freight revenues. Customer demand was strong throughout first quarter 2015, resulting in a record first quarter load factor of 80.1 percent. As expected, first quarter 2015 passenger revenues grew in line with our available seat mile (ASM) growth of 6.0 percent, year-over-year. Considering the 4.1 percent increase in stage length and the 2.7 percent increase in seats per trip 3 (gauge) from our fleet modernization, year-over-year, we are very pleased with our first quarter 2015 unit revenue performance. Strong revenue and booking trends have continued thus far in April. Second quarter 2015 year-over-year comparisons are more challenging, largely due to last year's exceptional and above-trend performance. With the continuation of year-over-year increases in stage length and gauge, we currently expect our April 2015 passenger unit revenues to decline, year-over-year, approximately two percent.
"We are delighted also with our unit cost trends, which continue to benefit from increased stage length, increased gauge, lower maintenance costs, and substantially lower fuel prices. Our first quarter 2015 unit costs, excluding special items, declined 12.4 percent year-over-year. First quarter 2015 economic fuel costs were $2.00 per gallon, compared with $3.08 per gallon in first quarter 2014, resulting in over $450 million in economic fuel cost savings. Based on our existing fuel derivative contracts and market prices as of April 16, 2015, we estimate second quarter 2015 economic fuel costs per gallon will be comparable to first quarter 2015's $2.00 per gallon.
"Setting fuel aside, the solid first quarter 2015 cost performance reflects our intense focus to control costs and maintain our competitive low-cost position. Excluding fuel and oil expense and special items, our first quarter 2015 unit costs were comparable to first quarter last year. Unit costs were down 3.6 percent, year-over-year, when also excluding first quarter 2015 profitsharing expense. Based on current cost trends, and excluding fuel and oil expense, special items, and profitsharing, we expect second quarter 2015 unit costs to decline in the one-to-two percent range, and full year 2015 unit costs to decline approximately two percent, both compared with the same year-ago periods.
"Our network optimization is producing strong financial results, and we are pleased with the performance of our markets under development. We continue to project roughly 700 aircraft by year-end, and an approximate seven percent year-over-year increase in ASMs versus 2014. The full year effect of 2015's expansion is also estimated to increase 2016 ASMs approximately five percent, year-over-year, and we currently expect any further 2016 ASM year-over-year growth to be modest, with a focus on producing strong returns on our investments. Our incremental fleet growth in 2016 is currently expected to approximate two percent, compared with 2015.
"The Customer response to our new Dallas Love Field service, which represents the majority of 2015 year-over-year ASM growth, is very strong, and first quarter 2015 Dallas traffic has increased 145.5 percent from year-ago levels. In first quarter 2015, we acquired the rights to two additional gates, bringing our total gate occupancy to 18 at Dallas Love Field. By August 2015, we are scheduled to operate 180 weekday departures to 50 nonstop destinations, representing a more than 50 percent increase in flight activity since the lifting of the Wright Amendment restrictions 4 in October 2014. We are very pleased to provide more competition, more travel options, and low fares for the Dallas market.
"Our international expansion also continued during first quarter 2015. On March 7, 2015, Costa Rica became our sixth international country served with daily nonstop service between Baltimore/Washington and San Jose, Costa Rica. We also launched international flying from Houston Hobby with seasonal Saturday service to Aruba 5 . We remain on track to add an additional six international destinations from Hobby later this year with the planned October completion of the international terminal. We look forward to beginning service to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in June 2015, and pending government approvals, Belize City, Belize, in October 2015.
"We are managing our invested capital aggressively and continue to provide healthy returns to our Shareholders. During first quarter 2015, we returned $381 million through the payment of $81 million in dividends and the repurchase of $300 million in common stock. And, we expect to complete the repurchase of the remaining $80 million under our existing $1 billion share repurchase authorization next month. Our balance sheet, liquidity, and cash flows remain strong, and we ended first quarter 2015 with $3.4 billion in cash and short-term investments, with a fully available unsecured revolving credit line of $1 billion."
Financial Results and Outlook The Company's first quarter 2015 total operating revenues increased 6.0 percent to $4.4 billion, on a 6.0 percent increase in ASMs, both compared with first quarter 2014, which resulted in operating unit revenues comparable to first quarter 2014. The growth in total operating revenues was largely driven by strong first quarter 2015 passenger revenues of $4.2 billion.
Total operating expenses in first quarter 2015 decreased 8.0 percent to $3.6 billion, compared with first quarter 2014. During first quarter 2015, the Company incurred costs (before profitsharing and taxes) associated with the acquisition and integration of AirTran of $23 million, and recorded a $37 million (before profitsharing and taxes) reduction to other operating expenses related to a favorable litigation settlement, both of which are special items. Excluding special items in both periods, total operating expenses in first quarter 2015 decreased 7.1 percent to $3.6 billion, compared with first quarter 2014.
First quarter 2015 economic fuel costs were $2.00 per gallon, including $.10 per gallon in unfavorable cash settlements from fuel derivative contracts, compared with $3.08 per gallon in first quarter 2014, including $.06 per gallon in favorable cash settlements from fuel derivative contracts. Based on the Company's fuel derivative contracts and market prices as of April 16, 2015, second quarter 2015 economic fuel costs are expected to approximate first quarter 2015's $2.00 per gallon, compared with second quarter 2014's $3.02 per gallon. As of April 16, 2015, the fair market value of the Company's fuel derivative contracts is a net liability of approximately $968 million for the fuel hedge portfolio through 2018, including a $225 million net liability related to the remainder of 2015. Additional information regarding the Company's fuel derivative contracts is included in the accompanying tables.
Excluding fuel and oil expense and special items in both periods, first quarter 2015 operating costs increased 5.8 percent from first quarter 2014, largely due to the first quarter 2015 profitsharing expense of $126 million, compared with $29 million in first quarter 2014. Excluding fuel and oil expense, special items, and profitsharing in both periods, first quarter 2015 operating costs increased 2.1 percent from first quarter 2014, and decreased 3.6 percent on a unit basis.
Operating income in first quarter 2015 was a first quarter record $780 million, compared with $215 million in first quarter 2014. Excluding special items, operating income was a first quarter record $770 million in first quarter 2015, compared with $242 million in first quarter 2014.
Other expenses in first quarter 2015 were $57 million, compared with other income of $29 million in first quarter 2014. The $86 million swing primarily resulted from $32 million in other losses recognized in first quarter 2015, compared with $53 million in other gains recognized in first quarter 2014. In both periods, these gains/losses included ineffectiveness and unrealized mark-to-market amounts associated with a portion of the Company's fuel hedge portfolio, which are special items. Excluding these special items, first quarter 2015 had $26 million in other losses, compared with $16 million in first quarter 2014, primarily attributable to the premium costs associated with the Company's fuel derivative contracts. Second quarter 2015 premium costs related to fuel derivative contracts are currently estimated to be approximately $22 million, compared with $17 million in second quarter 2014. Net interest expense in first quarter 2015 was $25 million, compared with $24 million in first quarter 2014.
Balance Sheet and Cash Flows As of April 22, 2015, the Company had approximately $3.4 billion in cash and short-term investments, and a fully available unsecured revolving credit line of $1.0 billion. Net cash provided by operations during first quarter 2015 was $1.45 billion, capital expenditures were $573 million, and assets constructed for others, net of reimbursements, were $20 million, resulting in free cash flow of $859 million. The Company repaid $51 million in debt and capital lease obligations during first quarter 2015, and intends to repay an additional $133 million in debt and capital lease obligations during the remainder of 2015.
During first quarter 2015, the Company returned $381 million to its Shareholders through the payment of $81 million in dividends and the repurchase of $300 million in common stock, or 5.1 million shares, pursuant to an accelerated share repurchase (ASR) program executed during the quarter. This ASR program was completed in early April, and the Company then received an additional 1.8 million shares, bringing the total shares repurchased under the first quarter 2015 ASR program to 6.9 million. During first quarter 2015, the Company also received the remaining 1.1 million shares pursuant to the fourth quarter 2014 $200 million ASR program, bringing the total shares repurchased under that ASR program to 4.9 million. The Company intends to complete the repurchase of the remaining $80 million under its existing $1.0 billion share repurchase authorization in May 2015.

In addition, information regarding special items and ROIC is included in the accompanying reconciliation tables. 2 Operating margin, excluding special items, is calculated as operating income, excluding special items, divided by operating revenues. See Note Regarding Use of Non-GAAP Financial Measures. 3 Seats per trip is calculated using seats flown divided by trips flown. Seats flown is calculated using total number of seats available by aircraft type multiplied by the total trips flown by the same aircraft type, for a given period. 4 Restrictions still apply to nonstop destinations beyond the 50 States or the District of Columbia. 5 The Aruba flights are made possible by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Pre-clearance procedures, which provide U.S. border inspection in certain foreign countries including Aruba. (1) Brent crude oil average market price as of April 16, 2015, was approximately $64 per barrel for second quarter 2015 and $63 per barrel for full year 2015.
(2) The economic fuel price per gallon sensitivities provided assume the relationship between Brent crude oil and refined products based on market prices as of April 16, 2015.
(3) In response to the precipitous decline in oil and jet fuel prices during the second half of 2014, the Company took action during fourth quarter 2014 to offset its 2015 and 2018 fuel derivative portfolios and is now effectively unhedged at current price levels. While the Company still holds derivative contracts as of March 31, 2015, that will settle during 2015 and 2018, the majority of the losses associated with those contracts are substantially locked in. However, if market prices were to increase or decrease significantly related to the 2015 positions prior to these contracts settling, the losses incurred at settlement could be slightly lower or higher than currently expected amounts during that period.

NOTE REGARDING USE OF NON-GAAP FINANCIAL MEASURES
The Company's unaudited consolidated financial statements are prepared in accordance with GAAP. These GAAP financial statements include (i) unrealized non-cash adjustments and reclassifications, which can be significant, as a result of accounting requirements and elections made under accounting pronouncements relating to derivative instruments and hedging and (ii) other charges the Company believes are not indicative of its ongoing operational performance.
As a result, the Company also provides financial information in this release that was not prepared in accordance with GAAP and should not be considered as an alternative to the information prepared in accordance with GAAP. The Company provides supplemental non-GAAP financial information, including results that it refers to as "economic," which the Company's management utilizes to evaluate its ongoing financial performance and the Company believes provides greater transparency to investors as supplemental information to its GAAP results. The Company's economic financial results differ from GAAP results in that they only include the actual cash settlements from fuel hedge contracts--all reflected within Fuel and oil expense in the period of settlement. Thus, Fuel and oil expense on an economic basis reflects the Company's actual net cash outlays for fuel during the applicable period, inclusive of settled fuel derivative contracts. Any net premium costs paid related to option contracts are reflected as a component of Other (gains) losses, net, for both GAAP and non-GAAP (including economic) purposes in the period of contract settlement. The Company believes these economic results provide a better measure of the impact of the Company's fuel hedges on its operating performance and liquidity since they exclude the unrealized, non-cash adjustments and reclassifications that are recorded in GAAP results in accordance with accounting guidance relating to derivative instruments, and they reflect all cash settlements related to fuel derivative contracts within Fuel and oil expense. This enables the Company's management, as well as investors, to consistently assess the Company's operating performance on a year-over-year or quarter-over-quarter basis after considering all efforts in place to manage fuel expense. However, because these measures are not determined in accordance with GAAP, such measures are susceptible to varying calculations and not all companies calculate the measures in the same manner. As a result, the aforementioned measures, as presented, may not be directly comparable to similarly titled measures presented by other companies.
Further information on (i) the Company's fuel hedging program, (ii) the requirements of accounting for derivative instruments, and (iii) the causes of hedge ineffectiveness and/or mark-to-market gains or losses from derivative instruments is included in the Company's Annual Report on Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2014.
In addition to its "economic" financial measures, as defined above, the Company has also provided other non-GAAP financial measures, including results that it refers to as "excluding special items," as a result of items that the Company believes are not indicative of its ongoing operations. These include expenses associated with the Company's acquisition and integration of AirTran and a $37 million gain resulting from a litigation settlement received in January 2015. The Company believes that evaluation of its financial performance can be enhanced by a presentation of results that exclude the impact of these items in order to evaluate the results on a comparative basis with results in prior periods that do not include such items and as a basis for evaluating operating results in future periods. As a result of the Company's acquisition of AirTran, which closed on May 2, 2011, the Company has incurred substantial charges associated with integration of the two companies. Given that the AirTran integration process has been effectively completed, the Company does not anticipate significant future integration expenditure requirements, but may incur smaller incremental costs associated primarily with the continuing conversion and sublease of the Boeing 717 fleet throughout 2015. While the Company cannot predict the exact timing or amounts of such charges, it does expect to treat the charges as special items in its future presentation of non-GAAP results.
The Company has also provided free cash flow and ROIC, which are non-GAAP financial measures. The Company believes free cash flow is a meaningful measure because it demonstrates the Company's ability to service its debt, pay dividends and make investments to enhance Shareholder value. Although free cash flow is commonly used as a measure of liquidity, definitions of free cash flow may differ; therefore, the Company is providing an explanation of its calculation for free cash flow. For the three months ended March 31, 2015, the Company generated $859 million in free cash flow, calculated as operating cash flows of $1.45 billion less capital expenditures of $573 million less assets constructed for others of $22 million plus reimbursements for assets constructed for others of $2 million.
The Company believes ROIC is a meaningful measure because it quantifies how well the Company generates operating income relative to the capital it has invested in its business. Although ROIC is commonly used as a measure of capital efficiency, definitions of ROIC may differ; therefore, the Company is providing an explanation of its calculation for ROIC in the accompanying reconciliation tables to the press release (See Return on Invested Capital).

Six U.S. cities to receive new public spaces to strengthen community ties; Balboa Park in San Diego, Plaza at Pratt & Light in Baltimore open new public spaces today
Today, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) grew its multi-year commitment to placemaking and local community development, announcing that six cities across the U.S. will receive Heart of the Community grants to reimagine and activate important, underutilized local public spaces.
In conjunction with Earth Day, Southwest Airlines Employees will complete environmentally-focused volunteer projects in many of the Heart of the Community cities. Placemaking, an emerging movement with environmentalist roots, positions public spaces as an engine for urban development, serving as a catalyst for building sustainable, healthy, inclusive, and economically viable neighborhoods.
Southwest's lead partner, Project for Public Spaces (PPS), has refined the participatory placemaking process for more than 40 years. Now in the second official year of the program, two former Heart of the Community grant recipients open spaces today in Baltimore and San Diego and ongoing projects in Chicago and Houston will open later this year. Three transformative pilot projects in Detroit, Providence, and San Antonio gave strong credence to the connecting and catalytic power of placemaking.
Throughout 2015, the following six public spaces will be developed, programmed, and activated as part of the Southwest program:
Albuquerque, New Mexico: Civic Plaza
Ft. Myers, Florida: Cornog Plaza
Jacksonville, Florida: Hemming Park
Milwaukee, Wisconsin: 4MKE: 4 th Street and Wisconsin Avenue
Portland, Maine: Congress Square Park
St. Louis, Missouri: Strauss Park
"Cities are more than destinations—they are places of human connections and livelihood," said Gary Kelly, Chairman, President, and CEO of Southwest Airlines. "Our Purpose at Southwest is to connect People to what's important in their lives. What better way to do that than by helping to create more access to our public spaces where communities can come together?"
Strengthened by broad community participation and engagement, placemaking incorporates the planning, design, management, and program development for public spaces as a means to advance vibrant, sustainable communities. Placemaking strengthens the connection between people and the places they share. For the past half-century, common urban problems, like traffic-dominated streets, unused parks, and isolated, underperforming capital improvement projects have led to increased feelings of social isolation and division.
"The best way to build a sustainable world is by focusing on Place," said Fred Kent, Founder and President of PPS. "Placemaking is more than how we design public spaces—it is a means by which people are collectively and intentionally shaping their environment and building deep and lasting community ties. Placemaking turns our approaches to land-use, transportation, governance, and the environment upside-down by asking people what they fundamentally need in a public space and empowering them to be a part of the development process."
These six Heart of the Community spaces were selected through a competitive application process. Proposed projects are evaluated in terms of preliminary work and preparedness, capacity for local impact, potential for large-scale public-private partnerships, and strength of the commitment demonstrated by local partners.
Nonprofit organizations in each of the cities will administer the local grants. Partners include DowntownABQ MainStreet Initiative, Lee County Library System, Friends of Hemming Park, Creative Alliance Milwaukee, Friends of Congress Square Park and Grand Center, Inc. As a part of the Heart of the Community grant, each local partner will receive technical assistance from PPS to set a clear vision and programming platform, activating the space. The grant also funds a variety of physical amenities, such as tables and chairs, outdoor reading rooms, and information kiosks – bringing new life and vibrancy to public spaces.
Read more about the key role public spaces play in community building: Places in the Making, an MIT whitepaper. Southwest's ongoing commitment, via Employee volunteering and the Heart of the Community grants, is to award $1 million in 2015 across the six cities in order to aid their placemaking projects.

Southwest and state and local government leaders revealed the aircraft in Kansas City, where Southwest first began its Missouri service in 1982. The aircraft, emblazoned with an artist's rendition of the Missouri state flag, was unveiled at a ceremony this morning at the Kansas City location of Aviation Technical Services, with whom Southwest has partnered for more than 35 years. Southwest Employees, community members, and executives were on hand, including Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, and CEO Gary Kelly.
"Kansas City and St. Louis have been vital cities in our network for more than 30 years," Kelly said to an enthusiastic crowd at the unveiling. "I couldn't think of a better way to 'show' our love to our Employees, Customers, and friends in the great state of Missouri than by dedicating this high-flying salute to them!"
Further demonstrating Southwest's dedication to both the Kansas City and St. Louis communities, Southwest donated $5,000 each to Science City at Union Station and the St. Louis Science Center. The funds will help support Science City's Summer Camp, which sparks interest in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) for children ages 6-12 through interactive, challenging, and fun activities, and contribute toward scholarships for the St. Louis Science Center's Flight Academy Camp.
"We've always valued the enduring partnership between the state of Missouri and Southwest Airlines," said Governor Jay Nixon. "As a tribute to 30 years of quality service by Southwest and Missouri's proud aerospace legacy, this magnificent plane will showcase the Show-Me State's aerospace strength around the world."
Kansas City band Lost Wax performed as attendees enjoyed local coffee from The Roasterie Coffee Company, and cheered as Kelly, Governor Nixon, and Kansas City Mayor Sly James closed the event by christening the aircraft amid fanfare. The plane then proceeded to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport for additional festivities, featuring Mayor Francis Slay.

This Boeing 737-700 is a high-flying representation of the Missouri state flag, prominently featuring the Great Seal of Missouri. The seal, as originally designed by Judge Robert William Wells and adopted by the Missouri General Assembly in 1822, features two grizzly bears embracing the motto "United we stand." The engine cowlings incorporate the center elements of the shield, including a crescent moon, a grizzly bear, and an eagle from the United States coat-of-arms.
Southwest Airlines service to the State of Missouri began on February 18, 1982 when Kansas City International Airport became our 18th destination. Missouri was the 7th state outside of Texas served by Southwest. Service quickly grew from the original two destinations to the current 26 cities served. On St. Patrick's Day of 1985, St. Louis landed on our route map, bringing 17 more daily flights into Missouri from our expanding system, and today offering 34 destinations. Intra-Missouri flights between the two cities became a permanent route on August 15, 1991. When you combine these stations, Missouri represents the 9th largest state in the Southwest network in terms of daily departures.
Missouri played an important role in the repeal of the Wright Amendment, a law passed by Congress in 1979 prohibiting nonstop commercial flights from Southwest Headquarters at Dallas Love Field to destinations beyond the four states directly bordering Texas. In 2005, Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond introduced legislation before Congress to add Missouri to the list of permissible states served from Love Field. Following Senator Bond's amendment being signed into law, a renewed emphasis on the overall repeal of the Wright Amendment was recognized by both the traveling public and Federal Government, ultimately leading a comprehensive reform of the anti-consumer restrictions a year later.

Airline continues its brand evolution; seats to be installed on -800 and MAX aircraft deliveries beginning mid-2016 This release contains: 1 Related Document, 11 Photos, 1 Video Southwest Airlines® (NYSE: LUV) has selected the Customer seats for its future Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX aircraft deliveries. The carrier, in partnership with Boeing, will be the first to roll out the new seats, beginning mid-2016, on new deliveries of its Boeing 737-800. B/E Aerospace, who designed and engineered the seats, unveiled the new product today at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, Germany.
In 2011, Southwest Airlines led the industry by announcing it would be the launch customer of Boeing's new 737 MAX aircraft with the first delivery expected in 2017. As the operator of the largest Boeing 737 fleet in the world, Southwest will continue with tradition and lead the industry as the launch customer for the next generation in aircraft seating. A 3D animation and photos of the new seats are available for viewing or download at www.swamedia.com/new-seats.
"The new aircraft seats are the widest economy seats available in the single-aisle 737 market, and offer a unique design that gives our Customers what they asked for: more space," said Bob Jordan, Southwest's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. "Serving as the launch customer for this seat is just one of several upcoming milestones related to our bold, new look launched in September of last year, and is specifically aimed at enhancing our Customer Experience."
The newly-designed seats, which will be seen on new 737-800s beginning mid-2016 join other significant brand milestones, including cabin interior updates on Southwest's 737-700s which will begin later this year, and continued 737-800 deliveries in the new Heart livery. The industry-leading seats are wider than current seats, and include an adjustable headrest and increased legroom, as well as more personal stowage, while decreasing the overall weight of the product.
"The new, lighter seat allows us to continue to improve our fuel efficiency," said Mike Van de Ven, Southwest's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "This seat selection is just one more reason we are enthusiastic about our fleet modernization plans."
The Company's ongoing fleet modernization effort also includes the transition of AirTran's Boeing 717-200 aircraft out of the fleet, the replacement of Boeing Classic aircraft with Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft, and the projected launch of the 737 MAX aircraft in 2017.
When it enters service, the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft—a brand new aircraft—will offer improved fuel efficiency, along with significantly reduced emission levels, and will provide the lowest operating costs among single-aisle aircraft. The seats are the first element of the 737 MAX aircraft interior to be released by Boeing and Southwest to the public. The Southwest seat color—a variant of Southwest’s Bold Blue—has been chosen, and the seats will be upholstered with eLeather, a composition leather made of natural leather fibers. eLeather, which made its debut on Southwest aircraft in 2012, is manufactured using eco-friendly technology including state-of-the-art techniques which closed-loop recycles 95 percent of the processed water, and converts its own waste streams into energy feeding back into the process.
"Working closely with Southwest Airlines, we determined what the customer wanted, and our talented designers and engineers responded to that need," said Mark Vaughan, B/E Aerospace's Vice President, Sales & Marketing. "We're proud to have partnered with Southwest since 1971 to create innovative products that customers will enjoy for years to come."
A 3D animation and photos of the seat are available for viewing or download here, and the airline has activated socially on Facebook and Twitter around the seat selection. Sample seats will be available for Customers and Employees to view later this fall.

Southwest Airlines in Top 20 of America's Best Employers
Southwest Airlines® (NYSE: LUV) announced today that the airline ranked as the top airline employer, and one of the top 20 best employers overall, according to Forbes' inaugural list of America's Best Employers for 2015. Southwest was in the top 20, coming in at #18 out of 500 companies to make the list.
"I am honored to share this recognition with all of our People at Southwest," said Gary Kelly, Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer. "We're so fortunate to have Employees who consider their work a calling. This is a testament to them, and their passion for our common purpose—to connect People to what's important in their lives. Our People are an inspiration, and it's a blessing and a joy to be part of the Southwest Airlines Family."
Forbes and Statista.com created the list through an online survey distributed to 20,000 workers in the United States. The survey asked employees how likely they would be to recommend their employer, and other employers in their industry, to someone else. The respondents mirrored the gender, age, region, educational level, and ethnicity of the overall U.S. workforce. The responses were compiled to rank the 500 employers represented in the list of America's Best Employers, including Southwest Airlines.

Company brings back a familiar face who's traveling more than ever
Southwest Airlines® (NYSE: LUV) has launched its latest advertising campaign in conjunction with existing placements airing during the NCAA Tournament. Working with agency partner GSD&M in Austin, Texas, Southwest's new campaign brings to life those human moments audiences can relate to, balanced with Southwest's humorous personality and position as the inventor of Low Fares.
"Southwest Airlines continues to reinforce the importance of connecting Customers to what's important in their lives through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel," said Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines' Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. "Our personality shines through in these ads, but beyond the college visits and wedding dancing we can have fun with, you're going to see an airline that works hard to keep fares low and flying accessible with a strong emphasis on the hospitality our Employees deliver day in and day out."
The campaign, filmed throughout the Los Angeles area, features a cast of characters and Employees who embody Southwest's bold and warm attitude. A 30-second launch spot that began airing Tuesday, March 17, during men's college basketball championship games on CBS, TBS, and TNT, highlights a series of college visits made possible through the airline's low fares and 86 U.S. destinations. The second spot launches tonight and re-visits a dancing bridesmaid who began her journey through a busy wedding season with Southwest just last Fall. Southwest Employees also get into the act to promote the airline's legendary low fares. Through this campaign, Southwest is reinforcing its unique personality and role as the inventor of Low Fares in the airline industry while also continuing its brand evolution.
"Southwest is an airline that knows exactly who they are – an airline with a heart," said Jay Russell, GSD&M Chief Creative Officer. "This campaign brings that heart to life and celebrates the Employees and legendary low fares that grew the company."
The ads will run nationally for four weeks. Southwest released the first two of the four ads last week, and received positive comments from the airline's fans and followers. The airline plans more activation on Facebook and Twitter around the new campaign in the coming weeks.

Costa Rica becomes carrier's seventh country served with daily nonstop service between Baltimore/Washington and San Jose, Costa Rica Seasonal weekly service between Houston (Hobby) and Aruba previews growing international future This release contains: 1 Related Document, 27 Photos, 2 Videos The People of Southwest Airlines® (NYSE: LUV) today inaugurated two international routes that brought new long-haul service for Customers using two of the carrier's growing gateways, Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport and William P. Hobby Airport in Houston. Each of the new routes is longer than 2,000 miles each-way and marks historic milestones for the carrier both by connecting Central America to the Southwest network of destinations and by offering its longest-ever nonstop scheduled service from any of Southwest's Texas Triangle of original cities of Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston.
Beginning today, Southwest Airlines operates nonstop service between:
San Jose, Costa Rica, and Baltimore/Washington on a once daily basis, and
Aruba and Houston (Hobby) seasonally, once every Saturday through Aug. 8, 2015
At Houston's Hobby Airport, Southwest Employees celebrated the first Aruba-bound morning departure. Later, Customers on the first inbound international flight deplaned directly into a celebration in the main domestic concourse, following their U.S. Customs and Border Protection Preclearance processed prior to departing the Caribbean island. This is the first-ever international flying offered from Houston Hobby. This October, Southwest is scheduled to complete the construction of a $156 million international terminal project which will give Houstonians and Southwest Customers from across the network access to more international destinations.
"CBP's Preclearance program allows us to deliver early on the promise we made Houstonians to couple our low fares and high-value Customer Service with Heart to places outside the U.S.," said Teresa Laraba, Southwest's Senior Vice President of Customers. "This is just the beginning of a very big 2015 for our Houston Employees and Customers with an additional six destinations across three countries coming online at Hobby later this year."
The countdown continues toward the carrier's new international offerings for local and connecting Customers who use Hobby Airport. Houston Airports System (HAS) is concurrently improving parking facilities and airport roadways to support additional flights. Southwest's schedule and fares for initial international service from Houston (Hobby) will be published this spring.
Southwest Airlines flight 602 from Baltimore/Washington to San Jose, Costa Rica, brought 143 Customers and the Company's legendary personality and value to Central America for the first time in the 44-year history of the largest domestic carrier* in the United States. Dozens of people came to Juan Santamaria International Airport outside San Jose at the invitation of the Costa Rica Tourism Board to welcome the historic arrival in the lush country known for its natural beauty and adventure tourism.
"Costa Ricans share something with our People—a passion to serve and create the kind of hospitality that brings travelers back for more," said Captain Chuck Magill, Southwest's Vice President of Operational Coordination. "Today, just as much as we celebrate the journey, we celebrate the destinations and relationships we now offer on either side of this new link. Our first scheduled flight to Central America realizes years of dedicated work by our Employees to connect people in Costa Rica with what's important in their lives."
