I'm honestly not looking for any special treatment or rule bending, but just wanted to warn others, as I hadn't noticed this on other promotions (Southwest or otherwise...and I just checked Marriott Hotels, for example, who does require one to stay within the promotional period, and register prior to any stays, but NOT to book a stay only after registering - that's a SW one-off as far as I can gather). @DancingDavidE - I did pull ahead two round trip flights to see family to fit within the promotion timeline, and chose Southwest as my (and additional family members) carrier, despite a higher cost. So yes, I did do something differently than I would have otherwise, including gaining a sense of loyalty respect from SW for noticing that in the past 6 months I've been choosing them more often than the other carriers I fly. That's fair @Mmck42, thanks for clarifying. There was another thread on this topic a while back, and there were a lot of people asking a similar question and atlhough many of us thought the intent was certainly new bookings with register then book, the wording wasn't clear and I'm sure you weren't the only one that went ahead with previously scheduled flights. It's too bad that you didn't catch that thread, one of the people called to confirm and had a definitive statement that it was "register then book" and I don't know if they charged ahead without re-booking or not based on the language, or if they re-booked based on that call to Southwest.

Re-read the fine print, but the wording used to be that you couldn't get the same credit card. So if you have a premier card, you'd have to vacate that for some period of time to reapply and get a bonus. But you could apply for business card or the other personal card I forget the name. So probably yes on the business card, as long as you can substatiate a business and/or have the business co-sign. But read the current terms for yourself, things change.

That's a pretty strong effort so far @ridgeway - thanks for your persistence. Thanks to @LindseyD for following up then on the initial request, I'm glad there was at least a receptiveness to discuss. I'd bump this to the top of the list of things to check on for the community's behalf, along with mobile boarding pass for groups. David

That's weird! It is a typo and supposed to say "date"? Mainly - when you go through and click on the boarding pass, the gate shows up there correct? (If it is assigned at the time you download the boarding pass) - I suggest on iOS that you copy the boarding pass to the wallet anyway so that you have an archived version. If you flight is delayed an hour you won't be able to call up the mobile pass any more, better to have it stored. And the gate should be on there if you re-download the pass after the gate is assigned.

This makes me pretty disappointed on how this thread and how much I really even trust this forum in general. Hope southwest takes note. I see timestamps in the header for each post, you don't? Anyway, the community here is not a customer support channel, there is some involvement by a team from Southwest but it isn't a place that directly goes back to the IT department. So you should trust the board for "here's a workaround" or "we suggest you do this, I've done this before, etc." but it isn't a place to submit a work order. Speaking as a user - I don't know if Southwest will support VPN in the near future, and I certainly don't rely on using it myself as that has proven fruitless, I bring a thumb drive.

That's the worst part - it makes no practical difference for an older companion other than some stress on the flyer's part, or for reduced stress/convenience maybe we buy Early Bird.

She didn't cry, but her body would tense up and hold on to the arm chair tight and give out a little yell. She kept asking to be held or sit with me. Even though she has her own seat, can she sit on my lap if she's scared? Thanks! It's not just kids that get a little tense at times. I'll echo @TheMiddleSeat that it may help to reinforce that the safest place in turbulence is seated and with the seatbelt buckled - that will echo the flight attendants giving their directions and the pilot who turns on the seatbelt light overhead. Although comforting, sitting on your lap would not be as safe for her.

I agree with you that they need to clean up the wording though, there's no reason that this should be ambiguous - the intention of the promo is obviously the long game to get people locked into A-list for multiple future flights, not to try and trick someone into flying one extra time or to miss the promo and feel bad about it.

My child is the companion, as such my child should board with me in the A1-15. Southwest needs to resolve this issue ASAP. You can always ask, personally I think if you asked the gate person nicely in advance you'll have better luck than trying to sneak through. But if they say "no" it's pretty clear that the rules say family boarding. Hopefully the pilot for boarding companions with the CP holder will be rolled out to the whole system, I only heard good feedback on this community about that pilot. For older companions it isn't like the person won't save a seat anyway, and it would help close the gap on younger companions that couldn't board by themselves like yourself and the earlier poster. In response to the above - if the child was less than two as a lap child, I'd take them through in A1-15 position - they wouldn't be taking a seat from anyone, their boarding document doesn't have a number...so the last position is your own number.

On average, it will cost slightly more, about 6 percent more, to travel using a Wanna Get Away fare and quite a bit less, 35 percent less, in the Business Select fare, and 22 percent less for an Anytime fare. It’s our hope that the updates to our Rapid Rewards program will make it more attractive for you to redeem the fare type that fits your travel needs. It will also make redemptions more affordable when you are booking close to your departure date and Wanna Get Away® fares are sold out. We’re making it even more affordable to use your points to fly on Business Select or Anytime fares. If you choose to redeem your Rapid Rewards® points for a Business Select ticket, you’ll be among the first to board your flight and receive a complimentary premium drink. Not to mention the option to use Fly By Priority Lane access. That's too bad, I would pretty rarely be using points for Anytime or Business Select flights except in case of emergency. If I did have to, then I would pay cash for it to get the 12x points. My daughter turns two in a few weeks, so we'll be burning through points a little faster starting in May, I guess make it an extra 6% faster. This will be nice for anyone that was booking those refundable fares with points though, that's a huge reduction for them. Can't be that many people though?

I think the approach is through the A-list and Companion Pass to build retention. Do the other airlines do this? I don't speak for Southwest, but I'd expect they still feel pretty good if they get 80% to 90% or more of frequent flyer business. The industry isn't setup in a way that any one airline can be cheapest on every route, I'm sure there are some city pairs out there than will be favorable to the other guys. If price is the only measure, then do what you have to do.

The only real way to vote and get change on the issue is with the wallet. I for one will be seriously considering a new airline going forward. I have been loyal to this point, but this one seems like an easy fix and they just want to ignore it like it doesn't exist. Let all the cheaters be on one airline - they can fight it out. Not worth the headache to me. Competition and competitive advantages is what drives these bad policies out. If I were in a competitor airline marketing department, I'd be running commercial after commercial showing the real world experiences people get with seating and why they should choose them. I'd theme it "Southwest, disappointment before your flight leaves the ground - fly xxxxxxxx instead". I'd even have one that plays the "muscial chairs" game (played on a plane) and say "where will you sit today?". It so ludricrous. My guess is it started off as a "good idea" to get extra money for paying to get a good seat or for that matter a seat together with your family. But people are good at taking advantage of the system and finding the workarounds to those good intentions - and now it's a train out of control with nobody empowered to make a change, except the CEO who doesn't have to fly coach anyway - heck I'm sure the executives have private business planes. He/She only sees the additional revenue from the "early boarding" - I don't think they realize the money they are losing from loyal people switching airlines (much harder to measure). Not Gary Kelly! https://www.cnbc.com/2017/11/17/why-southwest-airlines-ceo-flies-coach.html I understand your issues with the system though. And although personally I've been supportive on this community that I generally have no problem with people saving seats for a spouse or child, it's just greedy for one person to save six seats and I probably would consider just sitting down - you have your three spots over there, we're taking these three over here. Hope this helps Blake That might be an attractive option only if any of the layovers are really short - minimizing the number of times you change is good for luggage, but harder on people! My preference would be if any of the layover alternatives are between 1.5 and 2.5 hours maybe it will be worthwhile to get out, stretch, grab some food - espcially if you can manage it at a desirable airport like DEN, LAS, DAL where there are local restaurants to choose from. (STL...nope, SAN is too crowded, SFO too much weather risk with fog). MSP is a nice relaxing terminal with few but high quality options...but way out of your way to go to Orlando, hopefully that's not one! If the layover is less than an hour then you might as well take the no plane change option, it's riskier for any delays, luggage transfer, and you may not get to stretch for very long.

Unfortunately, the reservation system doesn't allow one to go out farther than that. I would think the system could be programmed to go out longer. in the old days, airlines would post their flight schedules in a booklet. Are the actual route schedules not out there more than six months? I wouldn't think so. Any insight/thought/info would are appreciated. I'm sure the airline knows roughly what they'll be doing during that time, but Southwest's approach is a little more flexible than other airlines where they have relatively less reliance on hub airports and the routes may change to adapt to current needs. I'd be interested to hear other financial motivations for not letting people book earlier, it seems counterintuitive from a revenue standpoint but there must be some flexibility gained that is used at times or else they would offer longer booking.
