Although Rick Pelc is fairly new to Southwest Airlines, he is no stranger to the airline industry. Rick is one of thefolks Southwest luckily discovered when the carrier acquired AirTran Airways, and he officially became a Southwest Employee in March 2012. He currently works as a Station Director of Ground Operations and oversees all Southwest and AirTran ground operations in Atlanta, as well as ground operations at nine other stations. Rick grew up in Pittsburgh. Before working for AirTran and now Southwest, he was employed at US Airways for 26 years. His long career in the airline industry has taken his family to many different cities, the most recent being Atlanta. Rick and his wife, Claudia, celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary in October. They have two grown children: Their son, Bob, lives in Philadelphia, and their daughter, Stephanie, resides in Fairfax, Virginia. Rick is a passionate golfer, and he and Claudia enjoy traveling. They have played golf at Pebble Beach, Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami, and Harbour Town in Hilton Head, South Carolina. With a master’s degree in human resources, Rick prides himself on being a People-oriented Leader who ensures that Southwest supports its Employees positively. He stays involved in the industry and his community by serving on various boards, including the Atlanta Airport Area Chamber of Commerce and Atlanta Technical College, and he is an alumnus of Leadership Atlanta. “I’m very impressed with how the AirTran Employeeshave been welcomed into the Southwest Family,” Rick says. He is excited to be part of an organization with such incredible potential. “When I saw the first Southwest plane taxi to a gate in Atlanta, I realized this was a momentous occasion, and I was very proud to be a part of it. It’s exciting to see these two great airlines coming together.” This passion drives Rick every day, and his enthusiasm, knowledge, and experience are appreciated by his Southwest Coworkers. Rick, in light of all the places your career has taken you, we couldn’t be happier that you finally landed at Southwest. —Shelley Logan Although Rick Pelc is fairly new to Southwest Airlines, he is no stranger to the airline industry. I remember reading about Heroes of the Heart in my book, Nuts!
Thought for the day: Why is it called chili when it's hot food? :)

That is awesome Southwest! I typed in "everyone matters" in Google and read this blog.
I am teamed up with a group of seven people. Together we are going to create conversations in Denver, CO. Ultimately dominating the city with a culture of honor, audacity, generosity and excellence.
I'm responding to this comment, but I do not know if anyone will read this. Please email me at mrdanielthompson@gmail.com asap. I want to talk to someone who is apart of this culture.

My brother is Sgt. 1st Class Michael T. Fuga, who was an employee of Southwest. I wish to thank Southwest Airlines Company and emloyees for all your love and care for our family during his funeral. Not only did you fly our family free from Las Vegas, Seattle, North Caroline to Missouri and back, but employees of Southwest attended my brother's wake and funeral. Your kind gestures and deeds was like a warm blanket of comfort for us at the time of our loss. Your staff were soooo warm, caring and giving, helping to make Mom's transition as comfortable as possible, we will always be grateful. (Mom was almost 85 when Michael left, she is now 86.) You reached out as if you were part of us. THANK YOU and God bless you always.

I was just reading through this topic. I just landed an interview at SWA HQ next week. I really want to nail this thing. I have studied southwest in college and used them in examples when i was in class. They are one of the best companies in the world to work for. So far they think I match up also. So now I just dont want to mess this up. Im doing some mock interviews with some friends so that should help. The position I am going for is in operations and specifically IT purchasing. I am a total techie geek and I love purchasing because it fits my frugal personality so well LOL.
I would really like to know what I am in for at this interview. If anyone that currently works in purchasing reads this and can help me out, I would be soooo happy to hear from you. I will be checking back here to see what comes up. THANKS

Again, Shelley is being much too modest. I know that she lived and breathed this Share the Spirit campaign for months. She will never admit it, but her hard work and Servant's Heart was instrumental in its success. You go SL!

Dear SW President,
I spoke to a SW pilot/passenger last week in BNA and he said that the big guys @ SW actually monitor the blogs...so here I am:
I fly SW frequently out of BNA, but have to drive or ride the commuter van all the way to/from Chattanooga. PLEEZ, bring SW in to the Chattanooga airport. It would help us AND bring you a lot of business. We have a newly renovated terminal, but it is only serviced by ASA, Comair, UselessAir, and Alegiant. There are 19 shuttle vans DAILY to ATL (11 passengers) and 14 shuttles DAILY to BNA just from CHA. You could get so much of Delta's ATL business as Chattanooga is only 90 miles from ATL! Redirect the BNA-RDU-BWI flight in the AM thru CHA and then redirect a one-stop flight from BWI to JAX thru CHA. That would get CHA service to/from the BWI hub
AND...one of the AM non-stop flights from BWI to BNA could go thru CHA with another of the non-stop BNA-BWI PM flights would get CHA wervice to/from the BNA hub.
Think about it Check the flight schedules and run the numbers on CHA. I know that the city fathers would bend over backwards to accomodate. And...I would be as happy as a fed pig in the sunshine!

Dear Southwest Airlines:
Thank you for a wonderful flight to Tampa Florida, from Buffalo, Ny. March 21 to March 28th. Although I didn't have my ID photo to return to Buffalo Airport (it was in my suitcase) The Security men were courteous, and had to know who I was. It was quite an experience for me. I had to go from point A to point B in a wheel chair. The Security were very thorough in their investigation of me. The "air blast was a surprise!!!. The exam of my "carry-on let me know, they had to do their job. Fortunately I was cleared for my return trip to the Buffalo, NY area.
At my age of 83 years, I have to say all your employers, no matter where I was
at both airports were extremely considerate. I have learned my lesson, make sure I have all my credentials in order. It would have saved everyone valuable time.At any rate, Southwest Airlines is my priority for travel. Thank you all.
Mrs. Marion P. Murray-Nw2i
Ham Radio Operator-Teacher of Morse Code-Tech-Commercial License exams. Volunteer exams for new Operators.
Again, Thank you Southwest Airlines for getting me home safe. I sure made a "boo boo but you saved the day.
God Bless.

Good for you,
I am so glad you took a stand on that women with the short skirt. I am so tired of seeing these women with hardley any clothes on, looking like sluts. I am so glad you took a stand. The next time I fly I am taking your airline because of this stand.

Phil, not quite yet but we are getting there. The song birds are back, We got some snow today, but 40 degrees is on its way in a few days.
Ops has been busy rerouting planes at dtw according to flightaware and southwest.com. Looks like they do a great job as there are not a lot of "trapped" planes when the weather turns.
Brrrrr!

I have always been a fan of Southwest - until this past Wednesday - February 14th. While I completely agree with flight safety - don't try to lfly or and if you can't do safely -- but to be "dumped" in Baltimore - at 7:45 PM (flight 1866) - and be told to rebook and offered no help in finding a place to stay, nor help in getting to a place to stay or any food - I was very, very upset. We also could not get our baggage - it was to be picked up in Providence when we got there. The Soutwest ground representative offered no assistance whatsoever. Our plane went on early the next morning - but we were not able to be on it - we could only go at 6:45 that next evening -- so I drove home - and took two other elderly people home with me. And of course, that cost was mine to bear as well. Does Soutwest care anymore???
