Thanks for the writeup, Kim! While I'm bummed that I somehow booked the wrong flight, 735, which I ended up canceling (yay for no change fees!) I'm glad a few fellow AvGeeks managed to make it and document the retirement. Better yet that three of you I consider to be pals. -JLJ

As an aviation writer and Southwest fan, I've heard many rumors about how the airline receives letters from passengers who met their partner thanks to the open seating policy. I'm already working with SWAmedia, but thought I'd ask the question here as well. Has this happened to you? If so, would you be up for an interview? - JL Johnson A-Lister, SWA fan, and Sr. Correspondent for AirlineReporter

I get them, but I don't drink. I leave my box checked so I can distribute the coupons to fellow flyers who need some LUV. Message me an address and I'll send you a few of mine to hold you over while you earn your own. JL- Just an A-Lister and SWA fan.

Nice piece, Rich. Thanks for a great tribute to the 735. I was booked on what was supposed to be the last -500 flight but ended up canceling the whole trip when I found out ELP-DAL snuck in what would be the real last -500 flight. (or maybe not? I hear a spare or two were kept...) In any case, I had some great times on those old birds. They'll be missed. Here's looking to all of the SWAwesome memories to come on the MAX birds. 🙂

Some great changes for the Midwest this time around. Thanks for the third daily non-stop MCI-DCA, Southwest!. Looking forward to seeing how the PHX and STL pairs work out for ICT in place of DAL and MDW.

What a great story and final end to what was an incredible history. I had the honor of attending the final day of AirTran operations as well as flying on the very last AirTran flight, flight 1 from ATL-TPA. I sure wish I could have gotten a few shots of those birds at GYR or the final one landing one last time at Cecil. In any case, Farewell, AirTran! 🙂

Excellent news! I know what an extreme amount of time and money it takes to integrate systems, and I appreciate the investment you've made to expand service for both sets of customers. While the ROI may not be immediately (or ever) realized since FL will eventually be retired, the investment you've made in customer satisfaction rings true. Excellent handling of the integration, my hat is off to you.

There are three Spirits of Kitty Hawk in the WN fleet. N300, 301 and 302SW. I believe the other two are still in service but will be pulled soon-ish. There is also a B-2 stealth bomber named the Spirit of Kitty Hawk which is located at Whiteman AFB, MO.

Sadly many domestic airports treat planespotters like terrorists. I've been confronted by security more than a handful of times for being "suspicious", suspicious apparently is doing anything or being anywhere on airport property with an expensive camera on person. The few fellow plane spotters I've met are among the most patriotic US loving folks I've run into.
