I have a question for those who were passengers on Flight 2294. Please tell me the situation on the plane. Did the temperature drop? Wasn't it cold? Was the wind blowing on the plane? Did something get sucked out of the hole? thank you.

Paula, this is great! Congrats on the awards. You have some serious Southwest fans here at my company who especially can't get enough of your blog. We too have a quirky, fun-loving corp. culture that rings true to our customers and just launched a blog of our own which you should check out (company name is in the last part of my email address--didn't want to put a "plug" in your comments!). You might even consider us the Southwest of the makeup world. Our companies should connect to create something fun for customers--send me an email when you get the chance? Cheers! 🙂

Lorenzo,
We serve water in cans and reduce the waste by pouring cups per passenger, not doling out cans. We have a dedicated receptacle in galleys for aluminum cans, which has been in place for years, and our Flight Attendants are diligent at putting them in that bin. The bin is then removed at provisioning bases where the aluminum is recycled. In addition, we have been cited for our excellent recycling history by the National Resources Defense Council in a report they did in 2006. We have implemented co-mingled recycling to capture even more recyclable such as plastic, paper, and cardboard. Our environmental record, especially in the area of recycling, is stellar. If you're interested in even more information on our excellent recycling of other materials, check out southwest.com/cares.
And, we don't have a beverage cart 🙂

FAA APPROVES SOUTHWEST AIRLINES REPLACEMENT PLAN WITHOUT GROUNDING AIRCRAFT Parts Meet Manufacturer Requirements; Planes Safe to Fly; No Impact for Flying Public; Replacements Already Complete on 43 Aircraft DALLAS – Sept. 1, 2009 – Southwest Airlines today reached a resolution with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which approved the carrier’s plan to replace certain parts on flap exhaust gate assemblies on 82 of its Boeing 737-300 and -500 series aircraft. Southwest has already begun an aggressive, yet safe and deliberate schedule to replace these parts on the affected aircraft. Southwest has accomplished replacements on 43 aircraft to date. The remaining replacements will be made by Dec. 24, 2009, with an inspection of the assembly every seven days on affected aircraft until the replacements are made. Southwest Customers will not experience any impact to their flight plans as a result of the replacement schedule. “We want to assure our Customers that this situation is not about having unsafe parts on our airplanes. Our approved vendor subcontracted a machining function without appropriate written approval from FAA. As a result, the parts are considered unapproved and must be removed regardless of their quality,” said Mike Van de Ven, Southwest’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “The parts have been inspected, and the FAA agrees that they meet the requirements of the aircraft manufacturer, Boeing. We concur that this plan is the best and most reasonable manner in which to fulfill the FAA's mandate.” Southwest Airlines, the nation's leading low-fare carrier, continues to stand above other airlines - offering a safe, reliable product with exemplary Customer Service. Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV), the nation's largest carrier in terms of domestic passengers enplaned, currently serves 67 cities in 34 states. Southwest IMO is the best airline around, I do like Frontier (or did) but this was a very limited scope airline and you can't even compare the two airlines. Southwest does an amazing job and has consistently performed in recent years, so how can you fault the excellent management that Southwest has? They have the most loyal customers (me included) and employees I've ever seen. In the long run, Frontier and it's employees (the ones that would have remained, as no matter what happened or who took over Frontier, jobs were going to be lost anyway) would have benefitted had Southwest been successful with their bid.
I also fly Delta, Continental, Airtran, US Air, rarely United or American - no matter who else I fly, none of them compare to Southwest and I always regret that I had to fly another airline but sometimes you don't have a choice. Given the choice, I'd always fly Southwest - even if it cost a little more, it would be worth it to me. I go out of my way to fly them now but I've got to go to Nashville or Birmingham. If they were in Atlanta this would be great.
We should all wish for Southwest to expand their access to gates and cities, everywhere they go they've been successful with their low fares and unsurpassed customer service. The only people that should be happy about this are the airlines that are afraid of Southwest because they know they can't compete with Southwest's business model. I was really hoping this would have happened because it would have given Southwest gates in Atlanta and more coverage in the Mountain states. And to those who hate Southwest, though I can't understand their position, I realize that this is more ignorance than anything, so keep on hiding under your rock.

It's October 2 and now the Republic deal is 100% done. I think Southwest should now buy Lynx Aviation from Republic. It has been making a nice profit and everyone knows the Q400's are 30% more fuel efficient than other commuters.
Southwest could grow its Denver presence by having Lynx feed them instead of the "new" Frontier owned by Republic. Republic doesn't want any turbo props in its fleet.
Alaska airlines certainly has proven a feeder like Horizion (its wholly owned commuter) makes sense and lots of dollars. Southwest could own the smaller markets like Aspen and other cities that don't work well with 737's.
Lynx would be a great buy with brand new airplanes, a separate certificate and well trained crews. Go get em Southwest

Low-Fare Carrier Submits Bid of More Than $170 million DALLAS, TX—Aug. 10, 2009—Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) confirmed today that the carrier submitted its binding cash offer of more than $170 million to acquire Frontier Airlines, which will be sold at auction as part of Frontier’s bankruptcy case. The bid was submitted to Frontier in accordance with the procedures established in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Over the next week, Southwest will discuss its offer with the various interested parties. The auction is expected to commence on Thursday, Aug. 13. Once the auction is concluded, the bankruptcy court must still approve the selection of the winning bidder. From there, the bid will undergo review by the United States Department of Justice, which is normal and customary when one airline is purchasing another. At this point, it is premature for Southwest to release complete details of its offer, which may change during the auction process before a winning bid is approved by the bankruptcy court. The offer contemplates that Southwest acquire approximately 80 percent of Frontier’s existing Airbus fleet, which translates into about 40 aircraft, plus all of Lynx. Initially, Frontier would operate its Airbus aircraft as it does today, with a planned retirement of the Airbus fleet and transition to Southwest’s Boeing 737s over a period of approximately 24 months. Despite the initial reduction in the fleet, Southwest intends to maintain all existing markets, as well as add new nonstop routes from Denver that are not served by either Southwest or Frontier today. “We believe our bid ultimately should be seen as the strongest offer by all interested parties, including Frontier, its creditors, Employees, and Customers,” said Gary Kelly, Southwest’s Chairman of the Board, President, and CEO. “Southwest is a financially stable Company, and through this acquisition, will continue to provide Denver its historically low fares into the future. Frontier is up for sale. The bankruptcy process will lead to change at Frontier in any scenario. Given Southwest's history and track record of running a successful airline, we believe that our bid is the best option on the table for Frontier, Southwest, and the traveling public. A successful acquisition of Frontier Airlines by Southwest will expand a network of legendary low fares to additional cities, add jobs into Southwest through growth, and strengthen low-fare competitive pressure in Denver and other cities.” To view a blog regarding the news, please visit: www.blogsouthwest.com/blog/southwest-airlines-ceo-gary-kelly-bid-frontier. Frontier filed for bankruptcy court protection in April 2008. Southwest submitted its initial indication of interest to acquire Frontier Airlines on July 30, 2009, which gave the carrier an opportunity to engage with Frontier in the due diligence required to determine the scope of a binding proposal. After 38 years of service, Southwest Airlines offers a reliable product with exemplary Customer Service. Southwest Airlines is the most productive airline in the sky and offers Customers a comfortable traveling experience with all premium leather seats and plenty of legroom. Southwest recently updated its gate areas and improved its boarding procedure to make flying Southwest Airlines even more convenient and simple. Southwest Airlines currently serves 66 cities in 33 states, and announced service to Boston Logan, which begins Aug. 16, 2009, and to Milwaukee, which begins Nov. 1, 2009. Southwest currently operates more than 3,300 flights a day and has more than 35,000 Employees systemwide. F9 is gone folks, yep, gone. This is no fault of WN nor Republic Airlines, in fact, United by far has the most traffic out of Denver...hmmmm.....F9 should consider it a honor to have the opportunity of employment by WN. WN has incredible loyalty because the people come first, in fact they are at this time trying to figure a way to keep people employed rather then out on the streets. Oh, by the way, again, F9 IS IN BANKRUPTCY!!! WN could just watch them falter, let them fall and then pick up where they left off, offering no opportunity of employment - because, their resumes would fall to the bottom of the gigantic pile....just one more resume of the many resumes of experienced pilots looking for a coveted position at WN. Come on folks, shake your head - you would be lucky to have the opportunity to fly for WN - if you don't think so, please do everyone a favor and DON'T seek employment with the wonderful folks at WN!!! I take it a lot of the negative comments are coming from F9 folks....who else cares?
As for great inflight service, yes, F9 has TV's but that's about all, nobody has FREE meals anymore, just pretzels, peanuts & a drink - yes, WN gives you a snack pack on longer flights - yes, for free....& hmm...NO charge for your first and second bag......hmmm, quite a concept....
Assigned seats - if you can't board a plane and find a seat without having to have someone show you where to sit your bum, you need serious help!!! This way of boarding is more efficient not to mention less confusing - I can't tell you how many time I have gone to my "assigned" seat and found someone else in it!
Anyways, to all you whiners...maybe you can find an airline that will feed you some cheese to go with all your whining....hopefully at no charge...

I just booked flights from BNA-MSP through MDW by booking each RT leg separately on 2 tickets for $57 less than your best fare from BNA-MSP on one ticket. Exact same flights, two different prices, the nice thing is I'll get double RR credits. This has been a common practice with the "other" carriers. I've been a Southwest fan and frequent flyer for 15 years in part because you have ethical and fair pricing. It seems ever since you started this campaign to fly into the major hubs, like Denver, Minn., Logan, NYC, etc. you've started to pick up some of the bad habits of the hub and spoke carriers.

After years of Left Field on the Flight Global/Airline Business site, aviation blogger David Field is back and on his own, with a unique and slightly cynical take on the airline business today. Southwest diary: No New York Earthshakes Southwest just began service at New York's LaGuardia, and that's been occasion for a load of stories about how the low-fares leader is changing its business model and transforming itself. Well, it is a sight, the image of a Southwest plane in or at least near Gotham, but the airline's eight daily LaGuardia flights mark more of a continuation of its recent service patterns than any big, radical shift or major change. Years ago, the major network carriers would have fought back on a move by a 'smaller' airline. Today, Southwest isn't 'small' and the major network carriers aren't so 'major' any more. They don't have the financial or operational strength to combat so-called 'encroachments' like these, which is why Southwest can march into places like LaGuardia, Boston, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and other key cities. I'm a resident of southern New Hampshire, and our airport in Manchester has to thank Southwest for its success. Do I worry about Manchester once Southwest opens Boston? Not really. San Jose is still a strong station even though SFO is now open, and Manchester is a proven market in its own right.
