This particular sale is for booking with points only, so if you're looking to book with cash that would be the reason. Otherwise these sales are definitely hit and miss. I definitely would have said something to the FA. You shouldn't have to suffer because a passenger fails to notify the airline that they are too large to fit in one seat. Yes, if there were seats available you could have just moved, but I would go to the FA first so that they could properly and politely inform the passenger about their Customer of Size policy. That way the passenger knows what to do for their future flights in order to avoid inconveniencing other passengers, and additionally help them avoid potential embarrassment about the situation on their future flights.  ... Yes, there is a policy for that and she wouldn't have even have to come out of pocket for it. She should have purchased it in advance so that the airline could plan for the extra seat, and they would have refunded her for the second seat after the flight. Here's the full policy:   What is your policy for Customers of size? Customers who encroach upon any part of the neighboring seat(s) may proactively purchase the needed number of seats prior to travel to ensure the additional seat(s) is available. The armrest is considered to be the definitive boundary between seats; the width of the narrowest and widest passenger seats (in inches) is available on our Flying Southwest page . The purchase of additional seats serves as a notification of a special seating need and allows us to adequately plan for the number of occupied seats onboard . It also helps us ensure we can accommodate all Customers on the flight for which they purchased a ticket and avoid asking Customers to relinquish their seats for an unplanned accommodation. Most importantly, it ensures that all Customers onboard have access to safe and comfortable seating. You may contact us for a refund of the cost of additional seating after travel. I looked up that trunk on Amazon and it says in the description "not to be used as airline luggage or a shipping container". If you haven't purchased it yet, my suggestion would be to have Amazon deliver it directly to your granddaughter's address, and then pack whatever you were going to fill it with into a regular suitcase that can be checked.
