I understand that there is a pandemic, and I've been very pro-mask. However, I do not understand how these travel restrictions are Constitutional. The power to regulate interstate commerce is specifically reserved to the Federal government.

I'm sure what is missing is the parents telling Southwest that they are going to try, but that at some point, the child will have a meltdown, and that the mask will have to come off. The decision was then made that the risk of having to have an inflight incident was too great.

@tappingmom1 A lot of things don't add up over the many, many posts and rants s/he has. Leaving aside the $900 vs $90 vs $72 issues amongst the many posts, I like to do math. Assuming that s/he keeps doing around 75 flights a year, and we use $10k per year, we get to an estimate of $133/flight. While volume matters, that doesn't make someone one of their best customers. Nothing wrong with that. I'm a low cost leader as well. I just don't do a bunch of DYKWIA and claim to be a great customer. I'm reliable, but I'm not high profit.

@161069484 This website exposes us to a constant barrage of entitlement, but this is an entirely new level. Southwest's policy is very generous. However, getting full advantage of this generosity isn't convenient for you so you are angry that Southwest won't change the rules for you. It's kind of shocking when you think about it.

I read the article. He was told to replace his mask between bites. They made an announcement. I know that they do this as I've heard it many times. I do not care if he was eating Twizzlers or pork rinds. He was clearly told this, and he didn't comply. The problem is a matter of abuse. Any of us who have flown recently have seen it. People sit, slowly eating something and keep their masks off for a long period of time, probably as an excuse. He found out that he wasn't special, and that the rules apply to him too. The madness is that people think that the rules shouldn't apply to them, and then they raise a stink when the are applied.

The easy solution is to get pre-boarding for both of them. Note that if your grandson is 2 or older, he is going to have to wear a mask for the whole flight, and they will enforce it.

To be fair, a mask optional flight is completely plausible though not with Southwest. I'm sure if you contact Netjets, they could arrange it. If you are flying internationally, Presidential Flight is the airline for you. I used to see their airport all the time when I went to Abu Dhabi. They would even offer mask free flights on a 787. I was just looking. Presidential Flight used to operate Avro RJ100. Northwest used to operate those. Those were wonderful aircraft.

@Dan1958 I'm guessing that the refund is based upon the difference in fares between flying to Fort Lauderdale and flying to Detroit. Ticket prices don't always make sense.

I've gotten like a dozen email messages about flight changes in the past few days. I can't even keep track of all of them. While not deal breakers, the change for one flight (repeated over several weeks) is inconvenient. I wish Southwest would let me track flight changes in the app or on the webpage. I know that most people don't have dozens of flights booked, but those of us who do contribute a fair amount to the number of tickets sold. Also, three days to change isn't enough. Yeah, if you are only dealing with one or two flights, it is fine. However, finding enough time to sit down and sort through all of these emails is hard for me.

@Cs2hicks Slight problem...any pet in the cabin needs to fit in a carrier stored under the seat in front of you. I can't see a 55 pound dog being able to do that.

@SouthwestFlyer1 Yes, yes. We've heard it before many times. My heart is barely able to beat. If I wear a mask, my blood oxygen drops to zero, leading to instant brain damage/death. Honestly, if your lungs are in such poor shape that you can't wear a mask, you should stay at home. There is a serious respiratory virus circulating, and it sounds like you would die if you got it. Meanwhile, my 74 year old mother who has pulmonary hypertension that went undiagnosed for years leading to severe pulmonary fibrosis wears a mask and has gotten a vaccine. She can't walk any distance at all without her oxygen level dropping into the low 70's, and she's on constant oxygen, and she wears a mask without dying.

@TheMiddleSeat Our computer security is so good that it is quite effective at stopping us from getting our work done. I can only check my email on a designated computer. If I'm not in my office, I need to use a VPN. To access the VPN, I need to log on to said computer, provide VPN software my password again, and then verify the connection using an app (I can do this on my Apple watch). I won't even begin to discuss the limitations once I'm logged in. However, the net result is that I have multiple off domain computers that do not have the same security, and that's where the most valuable IP is developed and stored.

They can remove their masks briefly to eat. I've heard several FA's lately announce that you must replace your masks between bites. I think a lollipop might be pushing it, and it isn't acting in good faith.

@gsking Where are you located? I live in Oklahoma, and I work in Texas. Both states have more than enough vaccines, and you don't need an appointment anymore. In Oklahoma, you can get one at physician offices and pharmacies. In Houston, you can just stop by NRG stadium and get one without an appointment in your car. Oklahoma, for gosh sake. I love where I live, but we are a poor, poorly developed states, and the vaccine seems to be flowing in the streets now. The nations have a lot to do with that. They went far beyond just serving their people, and they proved that they care about the community as a whole. From where I sit, the Chickasaw were incredible, and I understand many other tribes were as well.

And, please remember that the rule regarding masks and 2 year olds comes from the FAA, not Southwest. I agree that expecting a 2 year old to wear a mask is probably a bit much. However, much more troubling would be giving the flight attendants or the airlines flexibility in enforcing FAA rules. If the FAA says that 2 year olds must wear masks, we really need this very strictly enforced with no leniency and no exceptions. The alternative sets a precedent is quite scary, actually.

As I keep saying, if your breathing that vulnerable that you can't wear a mask, you probably shouldn't be flying right now. In case you missed it, there is a respiratory virus going around that kills people. It doesn't sound like you would survive if you got it. I'd recommend staying home.

@jksobonya Presumably, that's $5k that they would have spent anyhow. They just spent it on a different credit card. Personally, when I read what people do to get (and re-get) these credit card bonuses, I cringe. 30k points is worth maybe $360. I won't be elitist and say that that is very little money, but I'm amazed at the hoops people jump through to get eligible sometimes. I've stopped reading he Chase UR Points group on Flyertalk because it is annoying.

The subscription service is cheaper than buying the points outright, but it is more expensive than just buying the tickets. Quite a bit more expensive.

I can't find a link on the Southwest page, but lots of places (https://thepointsguy.com/news/southwest-subscription-program/) are reporting a Rapid Rewards subscription service where you get points per month plus quarterly bonuses. The math on this is atrocious. They are selling points over a year period at a best case scenario of at 1.78 centers per point. Seriously? So many questions... Is Southwest an airline or a point selling service? That's been a question for quite a while with all the airlines given how they push credit cards, but this is a bit too much. Given that points represent a liability on the balance sheet, will this not make devaluing points again to improve the books all the more tempting? How stupid are people that they would buy into this system? Why not just set the money aside and buy the tickets for less and earn more points? What is Southwest saying about the intellectual capabilities of its customers???

@italipower How was the conversion coerced? Southwest voluntarily broke the terms of the contract to benefit those with expiring travel funds. The devaluation, while piss poor customer service, was within the bounds of their legal right.

@MAD-A-LISTER I'm not an A-Lister. I'm A-List Preferred if you want to get into a pissing contest. I always pre-board. Does that piss you off? I get an extra seat because I'm fat (no punch pulling though I've lost 50lbs in the past 4 months). I witnessed a lady checking in this morning who was going for treatment for cancer (you see this a lot flying to Houston because of MD Anderson). She was really nervous and talking a lot about it. The agent was so nice, comforting and trying to calm her. The agent then asked her if she wanted to pre-board. The lady paused and stuttered a bit, and the agent said, "Let's get you pre-boarding so that we can help you a bit more." The poor lady (who was traveling by herself) burst into tears. She appeared to be perfectly healthy. From what I could tell, she was walking just fine. Doesn't all of this just piss you off?

No airline is "social distancing" anymore. Okay, Delta is keeping middle seats open until May 1, but that's it. If by upgraded seat, you mean buying first class tickets, go for it. If you can afford it or your employer will pay for it, I'd recommend it. American has the best domestic first class the last time I regularly got to fly domestic first class, but that was three years ago so who knows now. My employer pays for business class seats internationally only, and most of my domestic travel these days is paid for by me (a weekly commute) so I'll be staying with Southwest most weeks. Please let me know how it goes. Three years ago, when I stopped flying American for Southwest, I was often in the 50's out of an upgrade list 80+ people, but with fewer business travelers these days, things might be different.
