File a complaint with Southwest. My guess is that after preboards, the gate agent allowed "family boarding" which is another subject in its own.
On my last four flights, I advised the gate agent politely that I was a regular Southwest customer and knew the policy on boarding. I advised that if any deviations occurred I would report them promptly to Southwest.
No issues were noted on any of the four flights.
Maybe it is time to speak up and be counted. If the gate agents aren't going to follow the boarding policy, what's the point?

I don't see any reason to fly in and out of Knoxville. I'd prefer to leave things the way that they are.

The airline recommends that you arrive at the airport NOT LESS THAN TWO HOURS before the flight is scheduled to leave. However, you choose not to follow that recommendation and come in within 15 minutes of the scheduled departure.
You failed to follow the airline recommendation and you caused your own hardship. This is not about Southwest, this is about you.
Next time, get to the airport on time.

The Knoxville airport did a multi-million dollar expansion a few years ago in the hopes of luring Southwest. In the aftermath, Southwest yawned and nothing happened. If there was an economic benefit Southwest would be there.
While I find this subject to be entertaining, in the end, there is no Southwest plans in the immediate future. However, if we continue to bring this subject up over the next decade, anything is possible. In time, even sand becomes rock.

I will agree with you. However, the fastest way around this issue is to simply not buy Business Select. I do not see where it is a benefit. With the number of wheelchairs and gate agents allowing more than one companion for each of those, you are correct that the plane fills up quickly.
I buy Wanna Get Away and get on the plane. Sometimes I preboard, sometimes I don't. However, I recently saw eight wheelchairs when going to New Orleans and the only one that appeared to need help was one. The remainder were all in and out of the chairs multiple times running for candy bars, etc. No, I'm not judging, but this is what I observed.
If you can run to go get a candy bar and back to the wheelchair multiple times, help me understand the need for the wheelchair to go down the walkway to the plane?
I am in favor of medical certification for preboarding just like a medical certification for handicap parking.

This is not happening. I've already spoke with Southwest and they tell me there are no plans to add Knoxville.
Frankly, that's not a large enough city to be profitable. 1982 Worlds Fair.

You did the right thing and I applaud you.
This entire mess with SAVING SEATS, FAMILY BOARDING and so on has been created by Southwest gate agents and flight attendants not doing their jobs.
I proposed a flight announcement on another post which I would recommend that Southwest start doing at every gate. For reference, is is my proposed boarding announcement:
As a reminder to all passengers, Southwest has a policy of open seating and all unoccupied seats during boarding are available to you. Should another passenger limit your choice of seats by claiming that they are saved or otherwise dissuade you from making a seat selection, the individual limiting your choice will be asked to exit the airplane and their ticket will be cancelled without a refund or credit. We want everyone to enjoy flying Southwest and respect the open seating policy.

If you miss your boarding position, you board at the next available point.
There is no preboarding for late flights. Preboarding is solely for those who self-identify with a disability.

ATTENTION - ATTENTION
No, you can't have A list board first as that violates Federal law. It doesn't matter if you pay an extra $100k to have position A1, the preboard people board the airplane first.

I've heard people say that if they want a second seat they have to buy it.
Anyway, all of this preboarding and complaining has been going on for a long time. Here's a recent article that echoes the complaints.

This topic has been discussed so many times that it needs its own category or, even better, web page.
Under Federal law, those who self-declare with a disability are allowed to board first. This applies to every airline where they board a plane in the US or territories. No airline has the right to question you other than to ask some basic questions.
The issue here is that Southwest has open seating and, thus, those who preboard do get the first choice of seats. Whether you see it as a scam is irrelevant. Southwest must follow the law.
There is a little song that I hear in several of the airports that Southwest serves.

Whether you carry it on your lap, suspend it from the ceiling by telepathy or otherwise try and bring it on board, you are OVERSIZED.
You cannot hold it on you lap anyway during takeoff and landing.
Southwest strictly enforces those rules except at MCO where I am told that they all were spoken to about the dysfunction of not following the policies.
Check that bag.
