I've had it both ways. I think I was able to get off on a longer layover - say one hour. With 40 minutes the new passengers are probably already lining up to board and they will probably start boarding the new passengers almost immediately after the deplaning passengers are all off.

Don't get stressed out about seating. Even if 10 people preboard you will still have a seat. And whether you are sitting in the front row, an exit row or in the back you will still get to your destination at the same time. And if you absolutely, positively have to sit next to your flying companion and can't do without them for 3 hours (or however long your flight is), either buy your way up in the boarding order or fly another airline.

If you have an event that you have to be there for, whether it's a family obligation or an athletic event or a cruise or some other event it's probably best to fly on the day before the event to give yourself a cushion if something does go wrong.

Remember that the plane begins boarding 30 minutes before takeoff, so 50 minutes gives you 20 minutes to get to the second plane before it begins boarding.
I've had to go A-11 to B-13, one end of the airport to another, in BWI and it takes 15 minutes.

I agree that checking out YouTube videos is a good way to get information. When I fly through a new airport I look for videos about that airport. You can usually find a walk-through video that a passenger has posted that will go from getting off the plane to baggage claim. Very helpful. If you are going to Orlando there are literally hundreds of them. Happy travels.

I would say motion sickness, vomiting and anxiety are certainly good reasons to preboard.

the last flight I was on the flight attendant got on the PA and said "Hey, did anybody lose this?"
Everyone looked up and she goes on "Now that I have your attention, I'd like to go over some of the features of this aircraft....."
Not that a lot of people didn't go back to what they were doing, but at least she tried.

Yes. I have the $69 annual fee card and get 2 EBCIs per year. But in the OP's case when the flight was booked the EBCI window had already closed as it was less than 36 hours before the flight.

According to Bloomberg News:
Southwest Airlines Co. may ditch open seating, a classic hallmark of its business model, to offer assigned spots and premium seats in a bid to appeal to a younger generation of travelers. The move arguably would be the largest change undertaken by the carrier since it began flying in 1971. “We are seriously studying customer preference around our seating and our cabin,” chief executive Bob Jordan said Thursday. “We’ve been doing that for awhile — you have to be committed to understanding and meeting customer expectations.” Jordan’s comments were a step up from last year, when the carrier acknowledged it was monitoring growing industrywide preference among travelers for premium products. But chief commercial officer Ryan Green noted then that such things are often cyclical and the carrier would wait to see if the trend persisted. Now Southwest is expected to announce a decision on seating changes and introduce “a whole series of initiatives” — including overnight red-eye flights — at an investor day Sept. 26. While the carrier was known early on as being firmly against tweaking its no-frills model, it did give up plastic boarding cards, changed its boarding proces and expanded ticket sales beyond its own website. But its aircraft are crowded now, with passengers often filling more than 90 percent of the seats compared with 60 percent to 70 percent in past years, and “customer expectations change over time,” Jordan said. The carrier is also considering how such a change would affect its flight operations. “There’s no decision,” he said. “The early results for both customers and for Southwest look really interesting. If data says this what customers want, this is good for demand, for Southwest, for shareholders, then I think you have your answer.”

I also usually check my bag and don't use the over head bin. But being off the plane in 10 seconds rarely matters to me as I'll be waiting for my bag at baggage claim anyway.
Now if I have a connection to make that's a different story (hello, BWI). But I try to have at least a 90 minute connection.

This has worked for my wife and I:
Check in online or on the app. Have either paper or online boarding passes for both fliers. As Dancing David E suggested, get dropped off at curbside check-in. Show the boarding passes and the two fliers' IDs. Should work OK. Remember to tip the curbside check-in people.

I often get EBCI for two reasons:
(1) I have an early flight and don't want to have to be ready to check in at 6AM the day before I leave and/or
(2) I don't have to watch the clock on my last full day of vacation to check in at T-24.
It's worth it to me for those reasons but your mileage may vary.
