At the St. Louis Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 8, 2008, Southwest announced our partnership with the Center for Citizen Leadership. Southwest is endowing Fellowships in honor of two Southwest Employees who gave their lives in the current war—Finance Employee and Sergeant Charles B. Kitowski III, U.S. Army, and MCI Provisioning Agent and Sergeant First Class Michael T. Fuga, Army National Guard. This doesn't really pertain to this post but I figured one of you might know. What happened to the planes that had the front two rows facing each other? I remember my first flight was on Southwest in 1993 and we flew in the front row so my family of 4 were all able to sit together 🙂

JoeDal,
AOM is explained here..
The new service—called Automated Outbound Messaging (AOM)—will allow us to proactively deliver automated and customized messages to Southwest Airlines Customers when their flights experience a significant change. Providing this critical information will give our Customers an opportunity to adjust their reservation and minimize the effect that a flight irregularity has on their travel plans.
Help, I have been removed as a piece of unattended baggage!!!!

Brian - It makes a lot of sense to categorize your employees into these types of groups. As a marketing communications graduate student, I'm curious to know if the company uses these type of generational groups when determining your marketing segementation strategy for your customers? I don't expect you to give up your marketing strategy just a simply yes or no if the groups come into play at all when marketing to customers.
Thanks,
Patrick

Dave Ridley, our Senior Vice President Marketing and Revenue Management, recapped the changes we have seen over the past year, including the new boarding procedures, Business Select, and the Extreme Gate Makover. He made the point that we have always been an airline for business travelers by showing some of our commericals from the 1980s. The results have been encouraging in terms of traffic and perception according to him. Dave also revealed that the first of four test aircraft equipped with Wi-Fi capability will roll out in December. Fly-BY was also mentioned, and we have a separate post below.

Bob Jordan, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Planning, Pete McGlade, Vice President Schedule Planning, and a blog name you all know, Bill Owen explained the history of the Garage-o-Mizer. As long time blog readers will know, Bill told the story here on the blog. Interestingly the first two schedule optimizations freed up six additional aircraft each time. These were aircraft we didn't have to buy for the schedule. I always find it amazing, that no software companies could offer us a program that would optimize our schedules, and that we had to build it inhouse. If you want to see an outside perspective of today's events, check out Terry Maxon's reports at The Dallas Morning News' "Airline Biz" blog.

Hi everyone, I am blogging from Freedom Hall, here at our Headquarters, which will be the site for today's Media Day event. We've invited reporters (including a lot of the bloggers you see in our Link LUV section) to come down here to Dallas for a day of presentations from our key Officers, including Gary, and their departments. Don't worry, this is Southwest Airlines, so the presentations won't be the standard PowerPoint talk. I'm wired and online, so I will be checking in during the day. Stay tuned.

Good news! The terminal is still standing, but is no longer in use. Wikipedia said its still in use, only for airport offices.
I, too miss the terminal, I remember going to Orlando in 2006 on the plane and going to Haiti on the plane in 2002.
It's so sad to see a 50 year old terminal be replaced with a new North Terminal (I think the North terminal is fine)!

I loved this airport, and used to fly out of it all the time as a child. However, we began to fly Northwest when I was 8 or 9 and I never had the chance to revisit Smith before it closed down. I recently drove past the terminal, as the ramp is still open as an access road (at least it was when I was there) and I couldn't help but feel empty. That was the place where I discovered my passion for flight, and I'm actually attending a piloting school right now. Everything in my life relates to aviation, and I owe it all to the Smith Terminal. If you have any more photos or anything of the sort, PLEASE get in touch with me at mikehaggith@hotmail.com as I would one day like to build a scale replica of the place, and need to see exactly how it looked from any angle. Cheers,
Mike
