Southwest Airlines says it has adopted a so-called "poison pill," or shareholder rights plan, in its efforts to fight off activist investors. The plan will activate if Elliott Management — which wants to oust the airline's leadership — gains at least 12.5% of the company. If that happens, all the other shareholders will get a chance to buy one new Southwest share for every share they already own, half-price. Elliott revealed last month that it had gathered a $1.9 billion stake in the airline, or about 11%. The poison pill would water down Elliott's influence over voting.
Elliott has slammed Southwest for "poor execution" and a "stubborn unwillingness to evolve" that has driven its share price down more than 50% in three years.
The airline had already been mulling major changes to try and revive its business, such as adding premium seating.

If you paid for the wifi, request a full refund.

Like I have said before, you can do acrobatics and back flips all the way to the gate, wear a t-shirt that says "I CHEAT THE PREBOARD SYSTEM", give an interview on Fox News about your abuse of the system, then self-identify as a person with a disability - PREBOARD.

Soon, Southwest will start assigning boarding positions to all of the preboard passengers, and when they have boarded, the remaining six people who did not preboard may walk on the plane.

Such practices would result in lawsuits until time itself comes to an end. There is no basis to require someone who boards early to wait until the plane is otherwise empty to exit.
It is my belief that your suggestion is designed to discourage people from preboarding via wheelchair.
The only way to approach a partial fix is to require a medical certification like we have to handicapped parking. However, there will continue to be preboarding as people would see a doctor to get the certification and those will be approved, I assure you.

If there is a policy, produce it.

If it is so important, ship it through a commercial service.

I see a problem with charging extra for the first ten rows.
Doing so would essentially invalidate the current system which rewards passengers by boarding positions. The earlier the check in or frequency of travel, now you get a better boarding position.
Frankly, Southwest did this to themselves. Having open seating combined with preboard rules yields exactly what we have going on.
It is my opinion that preboarding should follow the same rules as handicapped parking. Get a medical certification. Otherwise, board with everyone else.

What you have is a lot of Karens and their male counterparts insisting on assigned seats, sitting together, etc. etc. etc. and ruining the airline by demanding champaign from a beer bottle.
Back in the day, anyone who whined about sitting together would have been removed from the airline.
I can go back to Delta very easily where I flew for 20 years previously.

The policy is clear. It is not really "family boarding" but better described as "child assist".
For the policy to come to life, you have to have a child under the age of seven. When you have a child under the age of seven, up to two adults can board with that child during "family boarding" which occurs between A and B group.
An "adult" is defined as a person who has reached legal age at the place of boarding.

I've actually recommended just what you are mentioning.
My plan is to sell tickets priced based upon boarding position. A1 is the highest cost ticket and C60 is the cheapest. Adjustments would be made for plane capacity and those with priority A group boarding.

When I occupied a seat that was "saved" and told the person saving the seat that it was a great subject for a book but not the way it works on Southwest, why didn't the flight attendant have me removed?

File a written dispute with your credit card carrier. State your case and I'm 95% certain you will be compensated.
Southwest should also kick in here as they are lending their name to an organization that has more complaints than there are grains of sand on the seashore.

Again, you are trying to reformat Southwest into United or Delta. You want to sit together and have assigned seats, yet you want to enjoy the price that goes along with Southwest.
Leave the current policy in place and my recommendation is to issue written warnings to gate agents who fail to enforce Southwest policy.

Like I have indicated in many posts, gate agents do not follow policy. I would suggest a photo or video of the event and contact Southwest, request a partial refund due to your boarding position being knowingly compromised.
All of the regular posts about boarding agents tells me that they really don't care. The only way to impact change is for Southwest to start refunding customers whose interests are compromised.
Report the incident to Southwest through the "contact us" link.

Actually, its spelled "yammering" and I mis-stated one adult. I've corrected that in a subsequent copy/paste of the policy.
The fundamental problem with this policy is its name. It is not intended to be "family" boarding, but is in fact "child assist". Too many people hear the term "family" and believe that the policy applies to them.
The proper term should be "child assist" where anyone with a child under the age of seven can board with up to two adults. And, as stated many times before, an adult is not an older child who has not reached the age of majority. They board on their own.
Southwest is drifting toward assigned seats because of the mad rush to get on the plane first and also the misguided impression that families and those traveling together can sit together. When they can't sit together due to seating occupancy during onboarding, they pitch a fit even though they knowingly bought a ticket on an airline that has open seating.

Savings seats versus buying two seats are not the same issue. They are not even in the same discussion.
The individual is frosted over an open seat that is being "removed" from the choice as it is being reserved for a future boarding passenger. Southwest does not endorse that behavior.
No, there's no "policy" per se on this, but there's no policy about wearing barbed wire clothing either. You can't write a "policy" to cover every point of human behavior. Instead, we have open seating.
I would dismiss the person from the flight who is saving the seat and would also have a boarding announcement as I have previously recommended. Save a seat? Get booted off the plane.

There is nothing wrong with stating Southwest policy to the employees. There need not be any tension as long as your information is non-confrontational.
There seems to be many posts about this. I thought I was the only one posting about the gate agents not following the rules, but I am seeing more and more.

I have called Southwest four times in the past about this very issue. While there is no formal policy about holding or saving seats, it is also not endorsed by Southwest.
You can sit in any open seat. I have done so.
I recently told someone that [saving the seat] is an interesting subject for a book, it is not supported on Southwest. Yup, I sat in the seat that I wanted.
Report this behavior to the flight attendant and ask that law enforcement be brought on board to remove the passenger who is interfering with the boarding process.

In my opinion, the abuse of preboarding, family boarding, carry on size and carry on count has destroyed the simplicity of open seating.
When no one can find anymore overhead bin space because George brought his riding mower on board and Betty brings the kids' swing set while Henry brings a wide assortment of cross county ski equipment along with an outdoor barbeque grill, everyone is afraid of running out of space and thus wants on board first.
I have warned Southwest about gate agent apathy of their boarding rules, especially what I see at MCO.
Southwest should examine the video of a random sample of boarding at MCO to see if gate agents follow the rule. I would say that on every flight, someone violates one of the boarding rules and carry on rules. Sad.

I want to understand Family Boarding and family seating policies
Day of Travel
If you're traveling with a child six years old or younger:
Up to two adults traveling with a child six years old or younger may board during Family Boarding, which occurs after the “A” group has boarded and before the “B” group begins boarding.
There should be enough open seats to enable the child to sit next to at least one accompanying adult.
If the child and adults are all holding “A” boarding passes, board in your assigned positions rather than waiting for Family Boarding
If you need and request assistance, Southwest will endeavor to seat a child next to one accompanying passenger (14 and older) to the maximum extent practicable and at no additional cost.
Families can speak to Gate Agents or Flight Attendants to request assistance.
If you are traveling with a child age seven to 13 years old:
If you need and request assistance, Southwest will endeavor to seat a child next to one accompanying passenger (14 and older) to the maximum extent practicable and at no additional cost.
Families can speak to Gate Agents or Flight Attendants to request assistance.
