I see a lot of jumping the gun attitude. Be glad that you guys have a job right now and that your airline is not as bad as the next one in Dallas. As much as I would like to see Southwest fly internationally, it's just not a decent option at the current moment. Now 5, 10 years down the road, I would be good money that you will see Southwest metal flying to international cities.
As much as I can understand you guys and gals feeling as if you have been betrayed by management, remember that this is public, and those that don't fully understand the airline industry will not understand what your line of thinking is or why you think that this is a bad thing.
Let it work itself out guys, be patience. Too many times in our society today we want things now and, "Why can't I be rewarded" attitude. The old days are gone, as much fun as they were, we as a group need to change our line of thinking. Practice patience everyone, be glad for what you have received for today, and humble yourself with that, for tomorrow will bring bigger, and better things to you and to this airline.

Steve,
Thank you so much for finding the time to interview the key members involved with city selection process. It is neat to hear how non-chalant the approach can be. Love the podcasts, I will listen to this one again, on my trip up to Salt Lake City, on none other than the beautiful aircraft of Southwest.

Dear Southwest Airlines and Valerie,
First off, Ron, I have my deepest regards for your family's loss, I will keep your family in my prayers.
Second, Valerie, thank you so very much for placing a few of the letters on line, and letting us know that you guys really do receive our letters and that they do tend to make there way up the food chain. If you could, and if you are able to, I would like to thank Mr. Gary Kelly for one thing being the honest straight forward person that he is, and how he has seamlessly taken the reigns, spirit, and heart of Herb Kelleher and the love for this business into the future. I also loved seeing how he is not one of the top 10 paid executives in the industry, as that shows to me that he cares more about you, the employees, the family of Southwest, as opposed to his own personal bonuses or pocketbook. To me that show great will and integrity in these worsening labor times.
I am a huge aviation fanatic, and fellow pilot, my love for aviation came from my first ever flight that I ever flew on. Flying on Southwest from Dallas to Harlingen (South Padre) via Houston Hobby. I can still remember those flights as a kid, because everyone on the plane acted like a kid, they were having fun and wanted the passengers to enjoy themselves. I have started to fly Southwest, and Southwest only for my travel to Major League Soccer games. To me, I receive the best service in the world, I feel truly welcomed and apart of the Southwest family on each and every flight.
Recently I flew to Chicago from Dallas, the weekend after Hurricane Ike. Our Flight attendant crew was Houston based, and the three flight attendants had been temporarily displaced. Each one of them had a smile, laughed, carried on, and enjoyed themselves on our routing from Dallas to Chicago. I make sure I let each and every crew member that I enjoyed their enthusiasm, dedication, hard work, and hospitality on each and every Southwest flight.
Even thought Herb is not at the helm, you would not be able to tell. You guys have done a wonderful job through these hard times, and the fact that every Southwest flight seems like a little piece of heaven, I highly commend you guys for that. I will be embarking on my first ever award flight, only after 4 months of being a Rapid Rewards member, and I am really looking forward to it. Even the drink vouchers that were sent really meant a lot. I hope that the future codeshare agreement with WestJet will come soon, and I believe it will be a great benefit to Southwest's operations (I am looking forward to it because there is a team in Toronto). With your plans for minneapolis, and the current success in Denver, the future for your airline looks wonderful, and I hope that I get to be apart of it in some form or fashion!
Keep it up y'all!!

This is a great story! Congrats to Sam! As much of an airline that you guys are, you're 10 times more of a family, and really care about each other in your company. I laughed out loud a few times during this story, love the different "rides", it would be great to see a slide show of all of the pimped out carts!

The Chicken Fried Grilled Cheese sounds really good, almost like a Monte Cristo. I have heard from many people that Chicken Fried Bacon is wonderful, because the bacon keeps it's original size, and all the flavor is locked in. This really makes me want to go to the State Fair now!

I always clap upon landing, because I too know of how difficult it is to land an aircraft, I'm a private pilot. But, it is something that I think is deserved. Southwest is the best about making a rough situation more enjoyable and easier to take for the uneasy passengers. Love this post keep them coming!

I love looking at the check-in hall of the old airports. The mezzanine level and the overall appearance is just completely unique and it will sorely be missed. I wish I had a chance to experience the Smith check-in hall, I at least had a chance to live in the old concourses that Northwest used to operate in. I am lucky to experience American's and United's operations at O'Hare.
Also, will the airport in some fashion keep the old terminal and destroy the concourses? What are the plans, that you guys know of, to deal with the area around the old terminal?
Have fun in the new terminal guys!

Brian,
Great article, and thanks for the links to the old airport terminals. I know exactly what you mean by the mystuiqe of the old terminals. I had a chance to experience the old Northwest gate area at Detroit before they moved terminals. Just something about their design, look, feel, and yes even the smell just took me to an era of aviation that is now long gone.
I am lucky that I know someone at Love Field who works in the terminal building's multistory complex, just right below the old tower. She works on level 5 and I usually take the old staircase up to her office, and both the staircase and her office have that unique old terminal smell that you described. She has a great view of the Southwest ramp at Love Field so I feel like I am in an a moment of aviation history. In fact my one photo that I have on here right now is from her office.
I will miss the old L.C. Smith terminal as it is a piece of aviation history that is going away. Hopefully when they do remodel Love Field they will keep the main terminal in it's old 1950s era design.
Good luck at the new terminal guys, I know you guys will use the new building to it's potential!

Brian,
It is great to hear about how fellow employees selflessly come to the aid of fellow employees who are based in areas of danger. It shows how y'all are more of a community and a family as opposed to just an airline. Best wishes and hopes go out to all the crew members affected by this. Keep the blue side up y'all!
