The car rental companies buy points from Southwest. Then they tell the airline how many points to hand out to a customer. It really is that simple. Since you apparently did this as a walk up, I presume you gave Alamo your RR number?

I suspect these points will be just like points you purchase, non tier and not CP qualifying. --TheMiddleSeat

I have had similar issues getting points through Alamo Car Rental. The last time I got the points automatically was January 2019. I took 4 more trips since then and have had to follow up with SW. I eventually get the points but only after contacting both Alamo and SW. I am still waiting for the points from a rental in early January.

A rental in April took until June to get my points. And I have yet to see my points for an October trip and way too early to even worry about points from t thanksgiving rental. All I know is something happened since January 2019. Very disappointed Whenever I run into a delay in delivery of hotel or rent car points of more then say 3 weeks, I contact the firm and ask them to get on with it. That normally does the trick.

@spacecoastbill wrote: The only way to rectify it is to go to assigned seating. That is not going to happen anytime soon. I disagree. While assigned seating may ultimately be the only real solution to some Southwest boarding issues, such as pre-boarding abuse, that's not true when it comes to seat saving. As has been suggested, a specific seat saving policy (allowing the saving of only one adjacent seat, for one example) could do much to help alleviate perceived boarding pain.
