@jksobonya I've usually seen this topic come up for folks flying with the new service to Hawaii. You can't book a flight directly to/from Hawaii and many East coast destinations. So folks make a reservation to go from Buffalo to, let's say, Oakland then make a separate reservation to get from Oakland to Hawaii.

Here is the official wording for the information provided by @dfwskier, 12 months is the correct time period: "To earn points for each Southwest Airlines flight, Member must provide his/her Rapid Rewards account number when making his/her reservation or prior to commencement of travel. No points will be issued to a Member if the name on the government-issued photo identification does not match the name on the Rapid Rewards account. Member who fails to provide his/her account number can request past flight points for up to 12 months after his/her flight by visiting Southwest.com." Southwest actually makes a clear written distinction between someone needing to preboard versus someone who needs extra time to board. Implementation at the airport... Here is the exact wording followed by the source: "Preboarding is available for Customers who have a specific seating need to accommodate their disability and/or need assistance in boarding the aircraft or stowing an assistive device. If a Customer with a disability simply needs a little extra time to board, we will permit the Customer to board before Family Boarding, between the “A” and “B” groups." https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/unique-travel-needs/customers-with-disabilities-pol.html

I agree that it would be convenient though I don't know that Southwest would turn on the feature. I am glad that we are able to take advantage of fare changes so a spreadsheet with the current set up is your friend :cathappy:

Short version: as A-List you're automatically assigned your boarding position thus no need to purchase EarlyBird. Longer version with additional references and detail (and source pages): See this thread, it provides a nice summary without getting to all of the detail I included below: https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/Rapid-Rewards/Early-Bird-Checking-with-A-List-Preferred-Status-Idea/m-p/78815 "A-List and A-List Preferred qualification will be based on a calendar year. Once A-List or A-List Preferred status is earned, the Member can begin enjoying the benefits immediately. The Member will maintain A-List or A-List Preferred status for the remainder of the calendar in which the status was earned and for the entire calendar year immediately following." (https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/faqs.html?topic=rapid_rewards_program_terms_and_conditions) "Once a Member qualifies for A-List or A-List Preferred status, he/she is entitled to Priority Boarding. This means that Southwest Airlines will automatically reserve a boarding position for the Member 36 hours prior to each of the Member's confirmed Southwest Airlines' flight provided the Member added his/her Rapid Rewards account number to his/her reservation and made his/her reservation at least 36 hours prior to the flight. Priority Boarding will apply only to flights that a Member completes while his/her A-List or A-List Preferred status is active." (same source page as the previous statement) "General boarding starts with Business Select customers, who are guaranteed positions at the front of the A Group, followed by Rapid Rewards tier Members and the remaining Customers in the A Group..." (https://www.southwest.com/html/customer-service/airport-experience/index.html) Happy flying :cathappy:

I'm not an expert but I think you're out of luck with the scenario you mentioned with AA though you should get in touch with them to confirm. Check out this third party web page dated July 9, 2019: https://thepointsguy.com/guide/how-to-survive-basic-economy-on-american-airlines/

@denno are you looking at this as a convenience factor? I actually prefer to book our Southwest flights as one-way, rather than round-trip bookings, as it makes it easier to make future changes on one leg of a trip without impacting the other(s). There is not a price difference when booking this way like there are on some airlines.

I've never interviewed with Southwest but I've seen several similar questions on the discussion boards. From what I've read you are still in the running so long as you see a status in the online portal. Good luck!

It's strange to me that one of the Southwest pilot hiring pages I listed includes a link to these discussion forum boards to ask additional questions. Maybe it will be a good resource going forward but right now it doesn't seem like a good fit for the handful of specific questions like yours that I've seen about qualifications and recommended path. For that approach to work I think Southwest would need someone in the pilot hiring process to jump in and participate in the forums. Good luck on your career journey!

Are you using either of these pages to search? https://www.southwest.com/air/flight-schedules/index.html For that first one click the "weekly" option under the view section before you click search. https://www.southwest.com/air/low-fare-calendar/index.html Both of those web pages should give you a good view of availability. Also if you post the city pairs then someone may be able to help with the search.

I served in the Navy but did not pursue an airline career and I'm also fairly active here on the discussion forums. Based on my observations most of the folks here are customers so I'm guessing that you'll get better traction with your questions on one of the external pilot specific discussion boards. You may also want to try to leverage your personal network to connect with others. One final thought is that there are two career pages for prospective Southwest First Officers and they include detailed minimum qualifications. If Southwest is your goal then be sure to keep the requirements in mind: https://careers.southwestair.com/pilots https://swa.pilotcredentials.com/

@gsking I am *guessing* that the original poster is not A-list given that they are here on the forums asking about the check-in process. I would hate for someone to be disappointed based on any comments found here 😞

@gsking that is NOT correct, unless you use EarlyBird check-in, your boarding position is based on when you check-in.

@Gail65 this is the link to the Southwest checkin page, which requires the booking confirmation number, passenger's first name, and passenger's last name: https://www.southwest.com/air/check-in/index.html Check-in for those without EarlyBird Check-In starts 24 hours before the flight at the departure city so in the scenario you mentioned the check-in for her will be available at 3:30 for her, which would be 12:30 for you. [edited to add referenced link] Yes, your sister is able to pick up a boarding pass when she checks her luggage, she'll just need her government issued photo ID. Here is the wording on the Southwest "In the Airport" page under the "Check Baggage" section: "Check your luggage at the Southwest Airlines' ticket counter, curbside Skycap Podium, Express Bag Drop kiosks (where available), or Self-Tagging kiosks (where available). Business Select Customers and Rapid Rewards tier Members can check bags faster through the Fly By Priority Check-in Lanes at select ticket counters." "Be sure to have your government-issued photo ID ready when checking luggage. Learn more about our checked baggage policy." Your sister may want to give herself a time buffer to get to the airport and through security. I personally love to fly, I'm excited for your sister!

@snowman911 reading through the qualifications listed here on the "First Officer Opportunities" page I'm pretty sure you need your ATP before you are able to apply as it's listed as the first of the minimum qualifications listed under the "Certificates/Ratings" section: "USA DOT/FAA Airline Transport Pilot Certificate" Then here on the FAQ page of the Pilots Career Portal FAQ page the first question and answer states the same requirement (bold emphasis added by me): "Q: Am I required to have a B737 Type Rating to be hired at Southwest Airlines? A: A Boeing 737 Type Rating is no longer required prior to a job offer. Pilot candidates must still have a U.S. FAA unrestricted Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) certificate with an AMEL endorsement to be considered a valid applicant." Note that the following thread also includes replies to the most recent pilot qualification related question that I've seen in the forums: https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/Southwest-Careers/Pilot-hiring-requirements/m-p/95779 Good luck!

I don't work for Southwest but I do know that coordinating flights is complicated. Your comment about most of the flights making it out feels right as the airlines will go with as many flights as possible. This is primarily a customer forum though you can get a hold of someone from Southwest directly using the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the forum pages
