The Family Bank or the nicely abbreviated "FBRRA" is an interesting idea, but I have some questions as to how it would work. RR points need to be obtained by at least 2 individuals first before being "pooled" into a "Family Bank." If the points can be transferred "to" a "Family Bank", it would make sense that they could also be withdrawn back to the original account that transferred them. Also, what would qualify as "family travel"? Do 2+ people have to use the "bank" for travel at any given time? What if just the Dad wanted to travel -- can he not because he put all of his points into the "Family Bank"? Could he then transfer his points out and use under his "own" account? And if he can transfer points back out, can he transfer more than he deposited (since it's a "family bank", after all, Mom won't miss an extra 1,000 points)? While interesting, the potential process offers more questions than answers and I don't see it working very smoothly. --Jessica

I would think that if a retired senior can somehow earn 110,000 points a year (!), 125,000 wouldn't be that much more of a stretch. I've never gotten close to these numbers (I don't participate / use any of the SW credit cards), but you could probably cover that difference in Rewards for Opinion surveys or RR dining alone (assuming you are a member of either one, which you should be). --Jessica

In this case that would be a non-existent passenger with the wrong last name. Source page: https://www.southwest.com/flight/travel-funds-search.html You're right! I didn't think that the travel funds were still in the original passenger's name. That's a no-go. --Jessica

^Not only that, other airlines charge you outrageous fees just to change a flight *once*. JetBlue? $75-$200. American? $200. Delta? $200. Southwest? ZERO. Realize the extreme value in this. Southwest is essentially the only airline that allows you to change flights whenever you want for free *and* use any credit for reduced fares on future travel up to a year in the future. I think that's incredibly generous, and there's nothing that needs to change. --Jessica

It's not a glitch. Travel funds with the earliest expiration date is what is used when you redeem one or more travel funds on a new reservation. If you then proceed to cancel the flight, that earliest expiration date is used for the entire reservation. If the process were to use an expiration date of a year from purchase date, then the older travel funds previously applied to the flight could then be used for more than a year, which is not allowed. Travel funds get one year of use before they expire. So, that is the risk you take when using travel funds. --Jessica

I had to search through my tweets, as I normally tweet something when I get an especially good seat on a flight .... and I've had front row twice. While it's nice to be at the VERY front of the plane, I do find the lack of overhead bin space and the inability to have anything in front of your seat (because there are no seats in front of you lol) a drawback. It's still great to say you had "front row" on a Southwest flight ... as close to first class as you're going to get, lol. --Jessica

Imagine wanting to switch airlines over $8 Wi-Fi that doesn't have 100% up-time ... I'll gladly take the spotty Wi-Fi service, and everything else that Southwest provides, over everything else the other airlines charge you (i.e. baggage fees, change fees, so on and so forth). You always comes out ahead on Southwest, even if their Wi-Fi isn't the greatest. --Jessica

Southwest Airlines Pilots Sue Boeing Over 737 Max Crashes And Grounding October 7, 20198:01 PM ET The Southwest Airlines Pilots Association is suing The Boeing Company for $100 million in lost income connected with the grounding of the 737 MAX aircraft. Southwest is the largest owner of 737 MAX airplanes and has canceled more than 30,000 flights since the FAA grounded the aircraft in March after two crashes killed 346 people. The union represents nearly 10,000 pilots. In a statement, union president Captain Jonathan Weaks said, "We have to be able to trust Boeing to truthfully disclose the information we need to safely operate our aircraft. In the case of the 737 MAX, that absolutely did not happen." The union has been negotiating with Boeing for compensation since early September but has not been able to come to an agreement. By the end of the year, Southwest Airlines passenger service will have been reduced by about 8% because of the MAX grounding, pilot income is based in part on the number of hours pilots fly. This summer the airline removed the planes from its schedule through the beginning of January. The union filed the suit in federal court in Dallas. The filing accuses Boeing of rushing the redesigned 737 to market, prioritizing the company's profits over safety and sound design and engineering practices. "Boeing ... withheld critical information from regulators and deliberately mislead its customers, pilots and the public and the true scope of the design changes to the 737 Max," the complaint stated. In a statement Boeing said it "has the greatest respect for the men and women who fly for Southwest Airlines. ... We believe this lawsuit is meritless and will vigorously defend against it. We will continue to work with Southwest Airlines and its pilots on efforts to safely return the MAX to service." In the second quarter the company reported its largest loss ever, $3.7 billion. In October of last year, 189 people were killed when Lion Air Flight 610 crashed into the Java Sea, 13 minutes into the flight. Then on March 10 of this year, 157 souls were lost on Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 from Addis Ababa to Nairobi when another 737 Max 8 aircraft crashed six minutes after takeoff. The investigation revealed the Ethiopian passengers and crew endured the same terrifying roller coaster flight path before crashing as the Indonesian plane. Within days, aviation authorities around the world began grounding the Max. Why didn't you try booking the flight online? And I'm confused: were you trying to book the flight with points, or with a credit card? Assuming with points, and assuming you had enough points to cover the flight, you would only need your CC to pay the $5.60 security fee. I also don't understand how you can have 4 pending charges and 9 pending charges. Wouldn't they all be from Southwest? So 13 pending charges of $5.60? Something isn't adding up here - so you are telling us that they tried to charge your card 13 different times to pay for a flight? --Jessica

First - I am sorry that you missed your 20th class reunion due to the weather. Most unfortunate! "So we got a refund for our flight." So your flight was cancelled, you got a full refund of your flight -- and you want more? They made it right by giving you a refund instead of something like a travel credit. They aren't obligated to give you more than that - technically, if I'm not mistaken, airlines (not just Southwest) aren't -obligated- to give you -anything- when flights are cancelled, but they often do, and in this case, they did. I am not sure what else you were expecting. --Jessica

Hi, Just trying to understand the sequence of events. You say that Southwest made you check your luggage at the gate because they were out of overhead bin space. And yet - your laptop was in this bag? This would mean that you took this bag through TSA, which requires you to unpack your laptop when you go through security. Are you saying that you did this, put the laptop back in your bag, and then when you went to the gate they checked your luggage and you did not have time to take your laptop out? If it were me, I would have had them wait 60 seconds so you could take your laptop out of the bag that had to be checked, at the very least. I also don't know how the laptop could have been 'fried', as you say, but I carry my small electronics with me on the plane nearly always. I've never traveled with a laptop via air so I can't comment on the fragility of laptops in checked bags. Also: Is it possible that your bag exceeded the size requirements? That could be one reason why you had to check your bag, and others did not. But if you were "10 minutes from boarding", I don't see how the overhead could have been full -- because no one would have even been on the plane yet aside from those who were already on it from the previous flight, which in my experience, is typically a handful to a dozen people (but could be more). --Jessica

I must be one of the "top off points" users. For a recent flight, the dollar cost was $154 -- I wanted to book the flight for free with points, but I was a bit short. $60 worth of points (2,000 points) was what I needed to purchase the flight with points, so that is what I did. $60 < $154! I come out $94 ahead, thus, the points purchase was worth it to me. In the OP's scenario ... I never would have purchased that many points in one go. As others have said, I would have booked at least one of the flights with your current points balance (maybe 2), then debated on what to do with the rest. --Jessica

Points expire with 24 months of inactivity. (Which, for the record, seems impossible to achieve - it would mean you don't fly anywhere for 2 entire years or take part in any of Southwest's partner programs to earn points for 2 entire years. But, since you are posting about it, it must happen to not only you, but many others!) The easiest way to get around this if you are not flying for awhile is signing up for Rapid Rewards Dining or Rewards for Opinions. For the Dining, you get points for eating out at a variety of restaurants, and at least near me, they have many Burger Kings that qualify. Buy a Whopper for $3, get 9 points, keep your account active. For the Rewards for Opinions, you fill out any survey assigned to you and get points. Even if you don't quality for the survey, you *still* get points (2-3 on average). It's a slam-dunk way to keep your account active - and for free! --Jessica

This is a tough topic, because so many people *love* their pets and animals, but here it goes: I don't have a problem with service animals. Some people genuinely need them for their disabilities. I do have a problem with "emotional support animals." I think "emotional support" is too vague a term and thus nearly anything can be an "emotional support" animal to the person - as evidenced by people trying to bring pigs, ducks, monkeys, and even turkeys on board an airplane (source: https://www.independent.co.uk/travel/news-and-advice/emotional-support-animals-planes-flights-peacocks-marmoset-horse-a8190576.html). Guys, no, just no. Your pet pig or baby horse or whatever it is is not an "emotional support" animal, I don't care how much you "love" it and how much "calmer" you are around it. You can survive any standard flight without your beloved animal with you. If you can't -- drive. Drive 10+ hours with your horse or peacock if you want, no one will stop you and you won't bother dozens of other people in the process. --Jessica

This is almost (almost) a moot point, since the iPhone 8 is the last iPhone to support "Touch ID". The more recent phones have Face ID instead, although there are rumors that the Touch ID will be re-introduced on future iPhones, it has not been confirmed. I doubt Southwest will spend any time fixing Touch ID issues, since most recent phones no longer have the feature. For what it's worth, I used Touch ID when I had an iPhone 6S - now that I have an iPhone XR, I haven't bothered with Face ID - yet. --Jessica

"how do i see them if i dont have all the past reservations I have made?" That is exactly what you have to do to keep track of your travel funds. You need to remember what flights you changed and at the very least, the confirmation number of the flight. Your travel funds are linked to the confirmation number, and you can look up your travel fund balances here: https://www.southwest.com/flight/travel-funds-search.html Beware though, that travel funds are only valid a year from the *original* date of purchase, and considering this post is over a year old, if you did not use your travel funds by now, you are almost certainly out of luck. --Jessica
